Sure it wins in static pressure, but that's not what Noctua is maximizing. And from 8:43 we can clearly see that the Noctua fan is much, much quieter. @SpiceCh
@SpiceCh Ай бұрын
@@gmlviper If all you care about is temps, then yes, the Noctua loses. But as I wrote in my comment nowhere is static pressure advertised as the measuring stick in the video title. Even 3 months later, the title still says nothing about static pressure. It cherry picks a measuring stick that's inconsequential to the user experience in order to get clicks. 10 decibel is twice the noise, and twice the static pressure isn't twice the cooling performance because diminishing returns are a thing. Noctua has their competitors beat in performance-to-noise ratio, with a performance that's more than adequate to cool high-end CPUs on the market today to boot. To 99.99% of people who buy air coolers, it is a better product. And if all you care about is temps, you're not buying an air cooler anyway. I don't know why you necro'd a 3 months old post telling me to "get real" when you are the one not reading what I wrote in the first place.

i will never understand pointless dB comparisons when it comes to PC fans i will either A. perform a task that does not req. performance from the PC witch does not make the components to generate heat, thus the fans are silently idleing at lower speeds, or B i am gaming and the sound of the fans does not stand a chance compared to the sound of the games (it's farly common for people to not even hear sounds that they SHOULD be able to hear due to the brain condition named "selective hearing" when they are concentrated on something)

I think one of the coolest and not spoken about part of this series is seeing the surface tension of air during the smoke test. And how the smoke in the air shows air being drug into the fan by the air proceeding it and the air around the fan that doesn’t get pulled directly in gets slung forward into the divider wall. If someone could harness this “free” energy contained within the air itself, I think it might bode well for a fan design. To use the pre-acceleration of the air as a benefit to increase overall air captured as well as the “bypass air” that’s completely missing the fan with an external siphon around the rim of the fan that would pull it in from the circumference as well instead of just the face. Go back and watch that slo-mo and you’ll see how fast that smoke is moving when it gets slung into the divider. Imagine using that air-speed and volume by having a circumferential fan intake in its own bypass circuit. Where the main body/fave of the fan has a normal design, but the circumference has a high pressure design. The fan should meet many requirements for all the seasons at that point. With the proper design that is. I’m no designer or engineer, but if someone does read this and either has some input or ideas they’d like to share and enlighten me on, or thinks it’s a good idea and makes it could you make a nod with the naming? Like the Jaspa Fan?

The vortex9 looks very similar in design to the chopper pump impellers at my workplace, but without the blades build into the impeller and housing. Basically heavy duty pumps with blades built into each side of the impeller to cut up any chunks passing through while pumping things like municipal wastewater or stewed tomatoes (chunky thick-quids) with enough pressure to move them up 3"-16" inner diameter pipes from tanks that are usually pits in the ground. I'm impressed the vortex9 clearances were tight enough to work as effectively as it did.

This is fan-tastic. Been hoping for a long time people would take more interest in improving air cooling. As a certified aviation maintenance tech, I know how effective air cooling can be. Most light aircraft use air cooled reciprocating engines. The cooling airflow is typically ducted and shrouded around the cylinder fins. Like, really close in some cases. This improves the efficiency of air cooling and I would like to see you take that next step. One thing worth keeping in mind is that, while static pressure is great and all, any fan that produces substantially turbulent flow is going to reduce the efficiency and effectiveness of your air cooling setup. It is fine for a blower on your car because it helps atomize fuel but you want nice, smooth airflow for air cooling. The only real contenders here is the TF34. The honeycomb sucks and the others produce extremely turbulent flow. Even still, you can see the TF34, which is modeled from a real turbofan engine produces some swirl. There are typically guide vanes in the duct which substantially reduce the swirl. That's what I mean about the next step. Along with ducting and shrouding, you need to be considering airflow straightening. Typically achieved with guide vanes or honeycomb ducts. Also, you don't need that massive hub on the TF34. Should only cover as much area as the motor in the fan assembly. Take as much blade area as you can get.

Yeah, that was my thought as well. I tried it, but it seems this design is building pressure by having the wing actually flying in a more laminar way. The overhang actually killed some pressure. I went in a bit of a different direction for the fan I sumbitted after this one though.

seeing how small the gap at the frame is, I guess you need some spill out at the front to keep the airflow up and not stall the blades. It's still a very clever design though.

Nice Edit: damn, bots really be botting, huh? Edit 2: saw an Arctic's 14cm fan (P14 Max, I believe) that seems to have amazing specs. Could you look into using that one for these vids? Edit 3: now that i thought some more about it, it seems like the fact that their 80mm fan has an actively cooled motor could provide yet another metric and another design factor for these fans (as in, maybe also look into which one keeps the motor cooler)

I feel like all we're proving at this point is that maximum static pressure leads people to making fans that don't actually move a useful amount of air. Which when you think about it, it makes sense. The principles are the same as trying to pull a vacuum or pressurize a vessel. Both of these can be done with fan/turbine designs, but at some point the volume of air you're able to move will equalize with the amount of air flowing in the opposite direction. If you don't care about how long it takes (ie, you only want to achieve maximum pressure differential) then the ONLY metric that matters is the maximum backflow. Hence, a one-way piston being the method used to achieve extreme pressure differentials, because it will never have backflow, and therefore it can increase pressure until it either breaks, or your drive motor can not exert enough force to move the piston. Basically, the only two methods are reducing gaps or increasing the power of your motor, and since reducing gaps also reduces airflow, at some point someone is going to send you a one-way piston that works on a rotatory fan motor, and it'll take 20 minutes to hit peak pressure.

Also just to point out it sounds like a vacuum cleaner and has a centrifugal compressor attached. Takes up a ton more space than a normal 120 fan, so its a bit of a gimmick at this point. A bit of a blown up laptop fan. So honestly, this one hitting a 5.4 with just an open fan concept is pretty good in comparison.

For a regular fan design to reach above half of Wonder from Down Under is straight up insanity! Finally one for the big companies to actually look at. I'm sure a lab of professionals can easily shave down those sound levels while maintaining performance. The LED potential for this one is also great!

These fans are awesome no doubt but this is really nothing special when you look at anything beyond consumer fans. Lookup the data sheet for a Delta AFB1212VHE. 129.9CFM and 10.7mmH2O at 49dB(A). You may say the dB is high but they can run at a low speed (very quiet) and still exceed most consumer grade fans performance.

More fans and more often! We need the best fan possible! Except next season you should have a category of testing for airflow at a standardized noise level (throttle the fan till it reaches a specific noise level) and pressure at a standardized noise level. This would allow us to determine which fan would be best for quiet setups for case cooling and in front of a radiator.

As someone who puts a lot of thought and research into my case fans, I love the showdown! On my builds I'm very noise sensitive, and it would be really cool to get a showdown where best airflow vs. noise is the benchmark. On your data sheet, your 11th rank Sawblade is listed as coming in at 2.6 dBA. I assume that's a typo, because if not it should take over the quiet cooling market easily.

If you get into the fan show down, and post a few videos on that, then do that. Overall, I just enjoy your content regardless of what it is that you are posting. I know you are a one man army that is trying to juggle a full time job, wife, kid, house, etc. The fact that you can put out at least one video here or there is more than enough to make me happy at this point.
