Welcome to Major Hardware! Join us for an in-depth exploration of PC cooling technology as we conduct a precision static pressure test on a 3D printed PC fan featuring an innovative Anti-Stall Ring. In this follow-up to our fan showdown series, we use a Fluke 922 airflow meter and a custom static pressure test bed to measure the fan's performance under controlled conditions.
Understanding the Anti-Stall Ring:
The Anti-Stall Ring, mounted on the fan's intake, aims to boost static pressure by facilitating back pressure airflow.
Experiment Details:
Witness firsthand how the Anti-Stall Ring affects cooling efficiency as we compare the fan's static pressure with and without this unique feature.
Why Static Pressure Matters:
Discover the importance of static pressure in PC cooling and how innovative designs like the Anti-Stall Ring can optimize airflow.

Same! I'm suspecting it might be some "velocity stack"-like effects, accelerating air going in. Also potentially that it could be blocking the common (I dare say, only) passage for backpressure air to escape on fans: around the edge.
@jasonk1540

It's the fact that it allows backflowing air a path around the fan which prevents turbulence. That's what was explained in its introduction video

Could print out two rings with and without the holes and test them
@nirodha7028
@nirodha7028 3 ай бұрын
@@jasonk1540yes but until scientifically proven by showing the difference between a ring with holes and a ring without holes that is just a statement… and even when a ring with holes outperforms a ring without holes there is still no proof as to ‘why’ the holes help unless another test specifically designed to show their effect is performed. Eliminating variables is the name of the game.
@Side85Winder
@Side85Winder 3 ай бұрын
@jasonk1540 there is no proof that it is even effecting the backflow. The smoke test wasn't shown clear enough to be conclusive on this. I bet it's acting more as a venturi effect. The air flowing past is causing high pressure further down the ring. This causes the cut out holes to suck more air in total. Creating a bigger cone in cone open ring with a 5mm air gap should increase it more than the 0.1 achieved.

at the rpms of the fan not really at high rpms 10k and above you could do all types of tuning to just the ring to really boost the performance and this modest boost someone said 3.3% as is right now at high rpms like 10k and above it would likely see even higher boosts likely close to 10% that is if it would hold together at those rpms which is unlikely but duplicated in steel it would hit that mark. Just an educated guess but i see it working similar to a spoiler or f1 cars wing they wont do much of any thing at 10 20 mph but once you hit 50 60 and above they have massive effects. RPM is just mph going in a circle basically LOL But as speed goes up the effect will increase until a point where diminishing returns is reached. Technically it wont ever stop seeing some improvement just that the return on investment will decrease to a point where it is not worth while He could ramp up the rpm using a drone motor from 2kish rpms to what ever the blades will take and run the same ramp up rate twice once with and once with out and plot out the boost in a graph and include information on how much the gain diminishes over time after it hits that point. The thing is that point could be way higher than what the printed fan would take before blowing apart
@AlphaMachina

The time it took to go down and the time it took to go up .1 tells you that the effect takes place after the fan builds up pressure under the blades, so results may vary from a case to a heatsink application. Anyway thanks for taking care of this detail!

I somehow doubt that the vent holes are recirculating and preventing stall. I feel like they're either 1) functioning like a wing tip on an aircraft, smoothing the vorticies over the end of the wing/fan blade or 2) providing a boundary layer cushion for the intake air, improving flow. The airflow around the edge of the tip, against the shroud, is stagnant. By smoothing the transition at the extreme blade tip, the airflow is less turbulent? Maybe...

I recently confirmed that the finish on fan blades definitely affects performance - I replaced those on my Asus Dual GTX1070 a couple of years ago with 'Everflow' ones but recently got hold another set, this time by 'Power Logic' (on the off-chance they wouldn't have the annoying buzz the first set has above c. 67% / 2500RPM - at £6 why not?). Both are OEM to Asus I believe, BUT the blades on the Power Logics are rougher-looking mouldings (otherwise exactly the same shape/geometry) and at the same RPM GPU temps are noticeably higher, for e.g. with the card pulling 140W and the fans at 2500RPM, 20°C ambient about 64°C vs 61°C). BTW, they don't buzz like the Evercools but of course have to spin faster for the same temps.

My condolences RE: eye-drops. My eye doc rec'd I use some, so I tried ones with preservatives first. Worked well, but then a scratchiness builds over the week, apparently from the preservatives, online says. Bought a few preservative-free ones and, fast forward a year, I now know I am violently allergic to preservative-free eye-drops. My eyes swell shut and it takes weeks to go back to normal once they deflate and are crusty and dead. No red eye though.

You do need a more precise way of measuring static pressure cause ... well from 2.9 to 3.0 and changing that slowly might just be 2.94 to 2.96 really (or even less). And while this setup does measure static pressure that is NOT the type of scenario those fans are designed for nor really a useful result: You do want airflow, you do want restrictions, but you ONLY want to restrict the airflow, not fully block it. In this scenario the fans behave rather differently cause effects like stalling can occur. And fans don't just have a linear relation between speed and pressure. A Fan might very well deliver the highest unrestricted airflow as well as the highest blocked static pressure - but when just moving some air with some restriction it performs worse than others (thankfully with the always identical motor/driver assembly a lot of the variations are controlled for).

For the getting sick again... I know this is gonna be rough, but chew garlic. It is actually helpful, garlic that is, but... you gotta masticate it, or crush it in a mortar/pestle and ingest the result of that instead. It has to do with the way the garlic gets broken down. I eat some with some meat and/or cheese to help tame it a bit. To put into perspective the amount it may or may not help... I only got sick once in the past year and few months so far. I use city transit. So I am not without potential chances to catch something. But pink eye... heh... sorry friend, garlic won't help that. As for the 0.1 increase in airflow. I'll take it. It may not be much, but every last drop of potential cooling performance is worth it, especially when trying to reduce fan noise. If 0.1 can help shave off 100rpm on the fans, that's great. But... won't know if it does or not til someone tests it, wink wink, nudge nudge.
