Majoritarianism Divides, Raghuram Rajan Tells Prannoy Roy

Former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan spoke to NDTV's Prannoy Roy on a range of challenges in front of the Indian economy today. Dr Rajan said the three biggest problems for the Indian economy today are the agrarian distress, the ailing power sector and the crisis in the banking system. The 55-year-old economist, who was the first RBI governor to not seek a second term in nearly two decades after his tenure ended in 2016, said government interference in institutions could affect both global and domestic investment. Mr Rajan's comments come amid a row between the central bank and the government over its autonomy.

Rajan is a scholar but if you want revolutionary change , he is not the guy. He is a overcautious bean counter , not an aggressive reformer in any sense of the word. The current mess in the economy is partly because of his stubborn posture on inflation. I'm not absolving the government though, they are of course singularly answerable for the current mess.

Manmohan was a pm and a well known economist, but had no connect with people and was remote controlled. "Majoritarianism" - what rubbish. India is an ethnic polyglot, so there is no majority and therefore no majoritarianism. However, there is a backlash by the indigenously rooted ethnic groups against communalist divide-and-rule policies by the Left and against trans-nationalist sectarianists such as jihadists. That doesn't make such a movement "majoritarian", and it doesn't suddenly mean there's a monolithic ethno-majority in India. The reality is that India is composed of many different languages, many different spiritual beliefs, including many different gods. That's a far cry from a monolithic ethno-majority. It's like claiming that the Quit India movement against the British was somehow Indian majoritarianism, or nativism, or chauvinism. It's like saying that when the Native Americans fought against Western settlers and colonizers, that they were being nativist, chauvinist and majoritarian. They were not, of course.

Dr. Pranay Roy, you said, "Recognized greatest Indian economist" does not mean being the best Indian economist actually. First of all, Raghuram Rajan is not even an economist He is a finance professor and finance is closer to accounting than economics. It was nice that you admitted that you won't understand anything what Dr. Raghuram Rajan would say Then how can you certify that he is even an economist, forget the greatest Indian economist after Dr. Amartya Sen. Yes, Dr. Amartya Sen is a development economist, but classifying Dr. Raghuram Rajan as an economist is completely bizarre! You said 'in your opinion' which is fine because that is not the fact that Dr. Raghuram Rajan is an economist. Dr. Rajan's NYAY proposal will become UNNYAY within a year by increasing unemployment, reducing GDP, increasing poverty, weakening rupee, promoting inequality and above all the widening of the fiscal deficits immediately. NYAY is even worse than Demonetization. I challenge Dr. Raghuram Rajan before you to discuss live why this NYAY is the most stupid advice for Congress or even to any future Government of India. Even the USA did not dare to implement this. Dr. Raghuram Rajan just copied and pasted the idea which is a failed idea. I am a Wall Street economist and was earlier in the Indian Economic Service 1992, hence I know the world economy in a far authentic manner than him or even Prof. Amartya Sen as I work with Moody Analytics and the top Wall Street banks on Federal Reserve Policies.

At the very beginning of the interview, Prannoy says that Rajan and his fellow Indian economists have written a book as to what needs to be done for the Indian economy. Rajan says 'that the old models that work are running out of steam, and we really need to look at new models...'...I could not find this book on amazon or elsewhere. This clearly shows that after 70 yrs India is still a 3rd world with a 3rd world media mindset. Hinduism in India is the only way forward. Majoritarianism is in all countries. If the majority is not happy how can one run a country. Hinduism is inclusive and democratic enough. The only fact is Hinduism is ingenious to India, which invaded religious groups are not happy including this channel. Pakistan's attack on India is a classic example. If India was a Hindu country, an attack on India would have been an attack on Hinduism. Then the pressure on Pakistan from India would have been patriotic to the extreme by all and not just by our military. Today we are just floating with an adopted foreign democracy and secularism which Indians are still confused and trying to settle with consciously. 80% of indians are Hindus. Prannoy Roy always sounds anti Hindu for the minorities .In india today it is stupid to think right and wrong, Hindus have lost a lot in their own country, That is the fact. Prannoy Roy needs to be corrected all the time. This is a great mistake done after independence. Majority community was ignored. That is the reflation today. India today highlights minorities views in the frame of majoritarianism ignoring the fact that minorities are invaders with an hidden agenda even today.

We need to make use of the the trade war between China and the United States and improve our manufacturing output manifold in the coming years. Global supply chains are looking to diversify out of China. Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam will be able to Garner their share in manufacturing in the coming years. We need to have policies which will make us join this club of countries, manufacturing our way to prosperity. For agriculture too we have a problem of plenty and that's the reason farmers are not getting decent price for their produce. We can export our way out of this problem. We need policies which take into account the global situation and put this country back to business.
