Honestly i always thought the whole traitor thing for the Dark Angels stems around the fact that they were frequently putting their need to hide their shame of the fallen by hunting them over protectign the Imperium ect. I think the Angels of Darkness novel was the most interesting when the Interogator Chaplain Boreas puts together a final message to the chapter master basically saying that the fallen Merir Astelan was correct that the sons of the lion had become too obsessed with chasing down the fallen over thier duties to the imperium as whole.

the bombing of Fenris could be considered payback, for an incident during the Great Crusade. warning: spoilers ahead. during a void battle in the Dulan Campaign of the Great Crusade, the Dark Angels' ship *Blade of Numarc* launched ten boarding parties on one of the Faash's largest battleships. Jorin Bloodhowl, Captain of the Space Wolves' ship *Aesrumnír,* ordered that very same Faash battleship to be destroyed. the *Blade of Numarc* hailed *Aesrumnír* multiple times in the span of a few minutes, attempting to get them to cease fire. the Faash ship was destroyed and everyone on it, the boarding parties included, died. the *Blade of Numarc* opened fire on the *Aesrumnír,* to either cripple or destroy it. It is interesting that the Dark Angels bear such shame for and trying desperately to hide something that happened 10,000 years before that saw half of the Dark Angels legion follow Luther and his cabal into betraying their Primarch. Meanwhile, the White Scars don't suffer from this same thing even though half of their legion betrayed the Khan. Granted the Fallen are still alive somewhere in the Galaxy, Warp, or timestream, while those traitor White Scars were formed up into suicide squads to regain their honor in death.

I'm reminded of a short story in an old white dwarf from the early 2000's were a group of dark Angel's is running a gauntlet of xenos enemies(can't remember who they fought think maybe Orks or Tyranids...) to reinforce a unit of Guardsmen on the verge of being wiped out desperate for reinforcements. When they reach the loyalist base having lost one of their numbers their greeted be Soldiers who think they are finally saved. Then the darks angel captain see's they have Ogryns and Ratlings in their ranks and says the following: Brother Beknor did not give his alive to save these abominations(abhumans) come brothers we are leaving. And from there just you know fuck off to hunt more fallen or whatever. It's got nothing on killing a Custodes but just goes to show the once proud knights of Caliban are now just a bunch of huge assholes who will let loyal Imperial Soldiers die because "Eww! Abhumans"

And about DA doing borderline heretical things: I've read about the situation where assault squad of DA attacked Astra Militarium mechanized company on a planet so irradiated that the only safe way to traverse its surface for normal humans was via transport vehicle. Dark Angels heard a rumor that one of the Fallen was with that company, so they started to rip open Chimeras just to look for him, dooming the soldiers, and at some point company commander ordered to shoot those marines, seeing them killing his soldiers for no apparent reason.

The way I see the Dark Angels is a group who were stuck with covering up a secret so old that none of them know how to responsibly handle it. The Legion era Angels were ashamed that after all the heresy, after the Emperor fell, that some of their own willingly turned their guns on the legion and either killed their Primarch or at least took him away from his sons. So of course they might get a bit cheesed off and go on a revenge spree. Also remember that many of these men were veterans from the very first Astartes formation, and many more were yet veterans of one of the emperors most capable and well respected Legions. For them to have traitors in their midst at a time when trust in any Legion was at an all time low might have been considered one more morale blow the Imperium simply could not take. And from then on it just got worse and worse. The only Astartes who were connected to the events died off, leaving instructions for anyone after to work towards some vengeance that the newer groups don’t understand. Like a millennia long game of Chinese whispers, where by the end no one understands why they keep up this secrecy, but they do it anyways because that’s all they’ve ever known. Personally it’s why I love the chapter and the Legion. Put together it tells a really tragic story about intent, tradition and misunderstanding on a fundamental level.

Because they don't have authority to do that. Unless told to do so by The Emperor. When they found Hekarron dead they couldn't figure out why he allowed Cypher to leave despite his alleged attempt at killing The Emperor. Of course we as the reader already know that Hekarron was dead and had been possessed by The Emperor to speak with Cypher and send him away. Something wasn't adding up, so two of the Custodians set out in search of Cypher, wherever he went they would find him and get their answers...

Hey hey hey, the Space Wolves war with Inquisition was not traitorous on the Wolves part. The Inquisition betrayed the people of the Imperium and the Grey Knights as ever were just mindless pawns being used in the plot of a single madman's vendetta. Let's put it this way, if the Lion learns about the things you listed for the Dark Angels he would likely be mad and/or disappointed. If Russ came back and learned about the Wolves fighting the Inquisition and why he would be proud of his sons. Proud that they know the difference between loyalty and obedience. Proud that so many sacrificed their lives at the hands of the Inquisition to save human life. Moreover, proud of how they shamed the ever elite Grey Knights.

There's a comic book series from a long time ago about the dark angels being found out by an inquisitor. I can't remember her name. They manage to trick a grey knight into killing her. Except she actually didn't die. One of the newer novels called Awakenings has her coming back. The comic books graphic novels are called the fallen, will of iron, and revelation.
