It is the way of champions.... Only men wash their glider in a thunder storm.
@johnlangmead33578 жыл бұрын
Flying deliberately this close to a developed Cb when there were escape options shows an apparent failure to understand the power of these things. Merely being in clear air is no guarantee of avoiding the massive updraughts, downdraughts and windshear typically associated with such a cloud system. These forces could quickly destroy a glider in flight. I was once piloting a powered aircraft (AUW near 1200kg) and was caught in a 7000fpm up draught in clear air under blue skies some 5nm from a tight isolated little Cb. It spat me out as quickly as it grabbed me after a 3000' height gain with power at idle. A friend of mine in a fully loaded C210 was taken in similar circumstances to 10,000 AMSL. A female hang glider pilot in a comp in Australia some years ago unwisely flew close to a Cb and was taken involuntarily to 30,000+ feet (verified by her flight data recorder) where she passed out and nearly froze to death. She regained consciousness on descent and was able to land. Another hang glider pilot in that comp had a similar experience, and died. Cbs are really serious and the glider that can take all they can throw at it, has not yet been built.
@lautoka638 жыл бұрын
You're right. There's a very good tale in one of the 1980's US Soaring magazine about a guy who got sucked up into a Cb and only just got out of it. I doubt this pilot realised the danger he was putting himself into (all that good lift), but that story certainly changed my behaviour.
@scheerlon8 жыл бұрын
If I might ask, I am very interested in this. Can't you put your nose down to counter that, getting pulled up so high? And what stands "Cb" for? Thanks :)
@johnlangmead33578 жыл бұрын
'Cb' is a standard abbreviation for cumulo nimbus cloud. The updrafts in and around a Cb can be so strong that while putting the nose down will reduce the net rate of climb in an updraught, the aircraft will still be going up. But it's not as simple as merely an unwanted climb. In some updraughts you could lower the nose until you reached your VNE (never exceed speed) and you would still be going up, AND you would be at high risk of breaking the aircraft up in the associated turbulence or if you were required to manoeuvre to retain control. The various structural speed limits of a glider in flight are there for a reason - they reflect design load limits which if exceeded can result in structural failure. Strong downdraughts exist in and near Cbs in close proximity to the updraughts. So the shear effect between them can also cause loss of control or structural failure. There are many good reasons to stay away from Cbs in a glider.
@scheerlon7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your detailed answer :) unbelievable those updraughts can be that strong enough, that you cannot even counter them with a dive. Well, gliders are little things in size compared to those clouds. So its easy to imagine one can become their playball.

Utter stupidity - soaring close to or underneath a Cu Nimbus is extremely dangerous, the risks of being sucked into cloud with subsequent loss of control in convection that can rip a sailplane apart let alone the risk of lightning strike. Please take it from someone with 40+ years experience in gliding - Avoid these conditions or risk paying the price.
@aeropunk41274 жыл бұрын
Crikey, I was always told to avoid those when I used to fly gliders. Massive up & down currents next to each other, could rip your aircraft apart. For a graphic account read about the F-8 pilot who ejected above one and took a good 40 minutes to descend.

For a few glider pilots thunderstorms present an irresistable challenge. Back in the '50s British gliding guru Derek Piggott was competing in national gliding championships in a Slingsby T21 two seat trainer (developed in WW2 for training military glider pilots) with an ATC cadet as co-pilot. Deliberately entering a thunderstorm he achieved a two-seater altitude record at over 17,000 feet. Piggott had over 5,000 hours on 184 glider types and passed away at 96 in 2019.

I was scheduled to fly the NCAR research glider during their building CuNim program but the FAA blocked me at the last minute because I didn't have a Glider Instrument Rating. Yeah, I know there is no such rating in the US. They finally found a pilot in Germany where they have such a rating, as it turned out I consider myself to be lucky because he got in hail that basically destroyed the glider.

As a very young already aviation obsessed kid I watched a glider trying to outrun a massive thunderstorm many hundreds of km away from it's field and I told everyone one day I want to fly a glider in a storm - it remains a dream of mine to pit a highly efficient flying machine against nature's worst and push the machine and myself to the aerodynamic limits to really experience flying - thats the fantasy (I also imagined banging my science teacher after school) the responsible aviator in me knows this would be extremely foolish and irresponsible as was this flight in which no attempt was made to clear the electrical and turbulent activity both of which are among many forces which routinely destroy aircraft far more advanced than your plastic glider, I see no stormscope or any indicator of microburst or downdraft turbulence so this is like someone posting a video of driving a high performance car blindfolded through a mine field

Gezur Arbeit CBs can't reach heights over 20 KM. Even with a tropopause at FL600, which is rather exceptional and tends to occur in conditions not conducive to producing severe convection, you've still got several thousand feet to go to reach 20 KM. Looking back, would you have done anything differently? I think that I would flown away from the storm and deliberately landed off airport.
@MajsterMajster8 жыл бұрын
I would do the same thing but I would fly just 10 km into last zone, not 20... :P. That was competition so there was no way back :P

Thought gliders can’t fly in rain...
@MajsterMajster6 жыл бұрын
They can! Every wing profile is sensitive to rain in different way. Profile in Brawo is not very sensitive so you can fly through rain :)

Why were you arrested? I jump out of powered aircraft that fly from a regional airport, so I must not understand something here.
@MajsterMajster7 жыл бұрын
I wasn't :D. That was just a normal control after landing because owner of the field called the police.

Are you not worried about Wind Shear?
@AngelLestat26 жыл бұрын
Inside the comulus you would have found a big lifting current, but also turbulence, lightning, hail and no visibility. That could be a hell of a ride.
@MajsterMajster6 жыл бұрын
That could be suicide ride :D

Isn't that a bit close to going VFR into IMC ? :D
@hejjegersej9327 жыл бұрын
Hmmmm, he always had the ground in sight aswell as a horizon. At worst the visibility was like maaany kilometers still. Sure he would be flying IMC if he went into the rainlines but he didn't. I would be much more afraid of lightning in his situation tbh.
@BigLittlePilot7 жыл бұрын
More like very close to being sucked up to 30+ thousand feet and disintegrating your glider. Who cares about IMC?
