There's an old wise saying about flying in rain: "big drops are good, small drops are bad". Explanation: If you are flying in lift, the rain drops will be big. They have to be a certain size to counter the lift and fall. Fine mist is bad, as it'll come down in descending air. Note how the lift areas you flew in have big drops.
@Dalboe5 жыл бұрын
Interesting theory, I will now start flying after the big drops ;)
@milankmetovics53874 жыл бұрын
I both experienced lift and sink in all kinds of precipitation. Big raindrops fall trough the lift, small drops can be carried / floated by it. Snowing / ice crystals can be also present in both sink / lift. Essentially in most of the cases its better to stay close, but away from the rain (few drops on canopy) following the line of the convergence created by the cold air undercutting the warmer air bellow you. ( That is of course only true if we talk thermal / convergence, and not think of ridge / wave) and that where the rainbow is with the pot of gold!:D facebook.com/milancse/photos/a.1888014207983585/1888014184650254/?type=3&theater

Nice. I fly RC model glider sometimes, and the best lift I ever experienced was right before a hail storm!!! The lift was incredible once this huge dark grey cloud was just a mile away. I had to almost dive my glider back down from almost the highest I've even been! I was on high ground and could see the weather approaching all the way from the horizon. So I could gauge when I should bring her down to land and run back to the car. I was loading the model into the back of my car as the first hail started bouncing off the tailgate! After 10 mins the sky cleared and I tried again, but the lift was about as interesting as last week's left over pizza.

How is the view at 3m 47s "clear of cloud and in sight of the ground" and what happens if you do get it wrong and do get sucked up above your magic get out of jail "I'm below 900m altitude" ... once you're above that you're into the requirement to be 1500m horizontally 300m (1000ft) vertically from cloud. What's your maximum possible descent rate if you pull lift spoilers / airbrakes etc? will that beat the uplift within a large cloud? .. and I cannot believe how close that other glider is to you at your 1 o'clock position at 4:07. I'm an instructor who will occasionally take students up in poor (but legal) conditions to show them how different it is in the air in those conditions compared to the view on the ground, or what the forecast said. So they learn that sometimes it's best to stay on the ground, and to have a plan B. I've flown in some difficult conditions, but some of this makes my toes curl. I worry that you believe that because you have been ok in these situations before, you always will be. But nature is not very forgiving, and sometimes unplanned things happen with the aircraft that the best pre-flight check doesn't pick up, or sometimes there's another person up there (like that glider at 4:07) but not on frequency, or not with FLARM, or FLARM doesn't update quickly enough, or there's a bird, or whatever. Enjoy your flying but please consider the risks to you and others. It's easy to get addicted to the thrill, and our brains are wonderful at letting us know how masterful we are becoming..

Yaw coordination especially while in turns. The higher wing of an aircraft in a turn tends to lag behind which causes a "slip" which means the aircraft is not pointed straight in the intended direction but rather at an angle. This will show on the string due to the relative wind passing over it, so if the string is not straight the pilot must add rudder to correct for it.

The only negative comments I'm seeing are (rightfully) criticizing him for flying too close to the clouds and in IMC, especially with local traffic. Gliders are supposed to maintain VFR and distance about 1000 feet from cloud bases. What he did can be considered dangerous since flying into the clouds can cause you to collide with traffic and lose your situational awareness. For pilots flying VFR who end up in IMC, there is a massive fatality rate over 75%.
@skriuttutt4 жыл бұрын
@@AmyAnnLand A lot of countries allow gliders to fly up to cloud base if they still have the ground in sight. The fatality rate for glider pilots accidentally flying in to IMC is pretty close to zero. When a PPL(A) finds himself IMC it´s probably because he/she flew 100kts straight forward into a larger cloudlayer (something like 7-8/8). When we glider pilots do it it´s usually thermalling (airspeed about 50 kts) and only partially during turning. Most likely not into a larger cloud layer as they very seldom have any lift under them...
