I was told by someone who works with cow horn in the Ren fair circuit that it's absolutely important to wear breathing protection while working with horn. The story I was told was that working cow horn releases microscopic SOMETHING and breathing it in can give you Toxic lung mold that is incurable and a few horn workers my friend knew died from it. Sorry to get dark but thought I should mention. I only found out AFTER I made my horn WITHOUT breathing protection a few months ago 😅

As a former trumpet player, yes that mouthpiece will definitely amplify the volume of any war horn you put it on. If you are trained to use it properly.

As a tuba player I can also say different shaped mouth pieces make different noises I had 5 mouth pieces just for tuba not to mention my other horns mouthpieces. Some I would only use for practice but I did have to use one of my more exotic ones because of the increased range it gave me

This might be the first youtube craft tutorial I ever followed. I havent made the sling yet, but the horn is fully functional. I used a trombone mouthpiece instead of a trumpet for a lower-pitched sound. This was a great tutorial and a great project I worked on.

Horn is the plastic of the middle ages. You can work it in a lot of different ways, such as heating it up for form it. It likes to split more than plastic, so it does need some skill, but that is why we're here, right?

Fun fact, the inside of a baseball is a ball of string. At least, unless baseballs have changed in the last twenty years. I actually broke a few baseballs when I was a kid and stripped one right out of the leather. And on a side note, are we ever really finished geeking out?

You rocked that project, well done. You are also absolutely correct about the linseed oil rag, not a case of might combust, it will self combust. Been there, done that. I actually burn the rags after I'm done with them, not taking any more chances. Mead time!

Kind of a project recommendation, but more of a sub-skill: for black leather dye, I recommend you try making some vinegaroon. It is super cheap and easy to make, and gives a _perfect_ black leather dye! Plus, it's fun to play with chemistry! There are a ton of videos on it, but the gist is fill a mason jar with white vinegar, chuck in some steel wool, wait a week (shaking occasionally) and strain. The vinegar breaks down the steel wool creating ferric acetate. If you brush this onto a piece of leather or dip it in quickly the ferric acetate reacts with the tannins in the leather which almost instantly blackens it. It's fun to make and insanely cool to watch, and less messy than a dye. I just wish there was an equivalent method for quick and easy brown or red colors!

I love the design. I did a similar ouroborus design on a seax I made. I made one snake on each side, and they cross over to eat each other’s tails. I wish my ability to draw snake heads was as good as yours. It looks amazing.

So, fun story. I made a horn out of foam and plastic pipe (and one of my old trumpet mouth pieces). Before I’d seen this video, and I can say that if you want a super cheap way to do this it work perfectly. I used a foam horn template from Kamui cosplay, snipped of the tip and put flexible plastic piping (about 1 metre long) in the hole. The piping then got twisted around the horn and glued in place. I used more thin foam to wrap around parts of the horn to look like leather wrapping. A bit of paint and it looks awesome! White and black for the horn, brown for the leather and copper for the ‘pipe’, it looks the part. A bit of foam clay to seal in the mouthpiece and it’s a relatively low pitch war-horn. I’m going to make another bigger one (think Erebor war horn size) the more pipe I use and a larger mouthpiece (maybe a trombone mouthpiece). I’ll hopefully get a lower richer pitch! Ultimately it probably cost me about £3 in materials because I already owned the mouthpiece and it was all foam and glue! 10/10 would recommend to anyone intimidated by real horn and with a reasonably alright understanding of foam craft :)

Nothing wrong with sewing some leather around a thing - and I definitely haven't watched all your videos (yet ) - but I feel the oroberos theme means this project could have benefited from you using a Turks Head knot instead of the leather loop. I love the things - every time I need to tie a pen to a desk (so people can always find it) I use a Turks Head.

To be fair here, not everyone can actually make that shape with their mouth and blow a trumpet, so having to take this long to work is understandable. I was stuck playing woodwind [I did enjoy it] because I couldn't make the initial buzz.

I don't know if you will see this comment but maybe? I recently found your channel and love it. When you were blowing the horn you did better when you fixed your posture and moved the horn up. I'm in 10 grade play baritone/euphonium (similar not the same) but I understand how trumpet/ cornet/ bugle/ mellophone/ marching baritone is played. You were correct when you said that you have to tighten and buzz your lips but you tighten your lips when you want to play higher notes. You also have to have good posture when playing any instrument but especially brass instruments. You have to have the trumpet (or other brass instrument) at a straight angle at 90 degrees I think (I don't know of any angles except Kurt Angle) otherwise your tone will be off. When you adjusted your posture and horn angle you made an actual sound which I am jealous of cause even though I have played French Horn (not anymore but I know how it is played) and french horn mouthpieces are smaller than trumpet ones, I don't think I could make a decent sound with a trumpet because the mouthpiece is small but also so steep and thick while the french horn one is thinner. Maybe for a future video you could make a ukulele or banjo (the banjo would probably be easier to make, maybe?)?

Question: How far away do you think this horn could be heard? And if you can't guess that is it at all possible to figure out how loud it is? I can't seem to find any info anywhere on the internet as to exactly how loud these things are or any adequate answer to my question. Estimates are alright I don't need an exact number and I figured I might as well ask someone who owned one.
