Thank you for making this! I just finished my first bento bag - the material I had on hand wasn’t the exact size it needed to be, but your last part about the sides not lining up exactly was exactly what I needed to figure out how to make it work. Thanks so much!

@@beckyzeagler5145 You're so welcome. Also ... a tip for your next one ... somewhere in the comments someone was kind enough to explain how to make the bag so they do line up. I haven't made another one yet. But I intend to soon.

So glad you mentioned about washing the fabrics beforehand, because in this case, it would be important that no shrinkage occurs to leave the inside larger or smaller than the outside. Great pattern, thank you!

You're welcome! I, like many, learned about washing fabrics ahead of time when sewing the hard way 🙃

I love your reversible design! I think that the 1:3 ratio works better in centimeters than inches.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try working with cm next time.

Would this cute bag hold a 8" diameter round sourdough loaf? Thanks!

Yes. It definitely will.

So the trick to make the seams meet is to make the width 14” instead of 12”
@sustainableslowliving9 күн бұрын
Thanks! Someone else explained how this worked to me too. I appreciate the help.
@lisakrueger134011 ай бұрын
The dimensions aren't coming out right because the FINISHED size, not the CUTTING size needs to be a 3 to 1 ratio. When you cut you have to add the seam allowance to the measurements. For 12 x 36 finished size, with 1/2 inch seam allowance should be 13 x 37 cut size.

OMGoodness - Thank you for this!

Yes. The seam allowance is extra. In another video I watched , the two pieces are sewn separately and then finished as we do in lined bags. The folds are at 1/3 of the fabric ( excluding seam allowance).

Lovely, straightforward tutorial. One thing - the 1:3 ratio should not include your seam allowance (if you start with fabric that's 1:3 and then take an inch each off the length and width for the seams, the piece you're forming the bag from is no longer 1:3).
@sustainableslowliving Жыл бұрын
Noted. AND thank you, I'll bet that's the difference right there 😉
@Kiltsnquilts9 ай бұрын
If the seam allowance is the same all round then that will even out though, won’t it? Half inch seams on each end and each side will be one inch shorter on both the length and the width so should still be 1:3.

Wouldn’t making it a 34 inch piece fix the gap?
@sustainableslowliving11 ай бұрын
I'm not sure. It's been so long since I made these that I honestly don't remember the dimensions. But if you come up with a solution please do share it so that others can benefit from it too 😉
@robynwia10 ай бұрын
The reason why it didn’t fit was in the very first comment. It is because of cutting the exact 1:3 ratio, instead of saying, I need 12x 36, and want 1/2” seam allowances, so cutting 13”x37” and sewing 1/2” all around would give you the finished 12x36 that will make it work.
@juliamurphy61686 ай бұрын
The 1:3 ratio will only work if you then add your seam allowance.
@sustainableslowliving6 ай бұрын
Yes. A few people have reached out and told me that. I appreciate you taking the time to do the same.
