2 parts sand.
3 parts gravel or aggregate (or 2 parts aggregate).
Concrete bonder.
Washing up liquid/dish soap.
Products & materials used in this video:

Note: Many ask where I bought the molds which are used in this video and I would leave a link to the same molds if they were/are available (they might pop up sporadically). I suggest searching Ebay, Amazon and/or other appropriate shops/stores to find the same, similar or whatever style of slab mould/mold you prefer.

I am building a boat dock for myself. I need 24 x 24 x 2 inch pre cast pavers for my flooring. I really like the idea of making them myself over the winter so I have them by next summer. I will need a total of 64 +. They need to be reinforced with rebar which I will coat in a poly for an extra layer of protection against rusting. Is there a place online that I can order molds or will I need to make one out of rubber? Any help would be appreciated. Awesome videos btw! Thanks.

You can get them on Aliexpress for very cheap, like 15 eur. There are hundreds of styles and actually you are better off to buy the ones that have no bottom, so you cam make them on any flat surface and you only need one, two molds. You make a thicker mix, fill your mold with cement, remove the mold and continue. Let them dry and then put in place. Or mold them directly on the space you want to tile. I bought one and the plastic is very thick and durable.

@dramamask
@dramamask 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know as I have never had a problem with concrete warping, I don't think. If you demolded early the only problem I can think you would have is the concrete being too brittle for demold.
@toddoliver3385
@toddoliver3385 Жыл бұрын
Either mix was too wet or more likely it dried unevenly... like the top dried & shrunk, causing it to curl up. Misting the surface with water every hour or so will help this & keep the concrete whiter (possible stronger too).

Thank you MrMarv! The gravel/aggregate was around 10mm in the video. I think there are so many mixes and I only do what works for me. I think there may be a lot of 'suck it and see' scenarios with finding the appropriate mix for each job. Btw, I used a 321 ratio mix in the video, but have gone back to a 221 mix, as it seems I can demold without cracking slabs the next day instead of waiting 48 hours to demold with a 321 mix. :)

Does it make economical sense to make your own slabs? How much would it cost to make 600×600 for example?
@dramamask
@dramamask 6 жыл бұрын
It can make economical sense. You'll have to work out what it would cost to make a slab with the materials you use, plus your own labour.
@andrewholz1414
@andrewholz1414 6 жыл бұрын
My personal estimate using my local paver prices and accounting for the costs of a mortar mixer, vibrating table, concrete Pam (lol), disposable trowels & shovels, and the miscellaneous molds, you would have to me make approximately 100 (20"x20") pavers to beat store costs, fluctuating up or down by approximately 15 pavers with varying sand, grout, and aggregate prices. So if you don't plan on makin about 100 (20"x20") pavers, it is MUCH more cost effective to use the autonomously made pavers from your local hardware store. Imagine if everyone made their own pavers. There would be much greater use/waste of natural resources (already a worldwide sand shortage) than if we left it to the multi million dollar machines whose objectives are to limit waste and create a product people trust. That being said, i'm sure the quality of the pavers you made in this video are top notch, and I'd jump at the opportunity to purchase some.
@bigoldgrizzly
@bigoldgrizzly 2 жыл бұрын
What price can you put on the fun of doing this and the satisfaction of a job well done ?? The economic benefits of diy slab making increase dramatically when you have a lot of slabs to do and can order materials in bulk - I buy direct from the quarry which gives huge savings over diy stores or even builders merchants. Once you are done making, provided you look your moulds, you can get up to 2/3rds of your outlay back when you re-sell. If you have a concrete mixer, work out how many moulds you can fill per mix, and just buy that many moulds

@dramamask

Haha! I have tried a washing machine, but had no luck. Maybe your brand and model will be more successful. You can make your own vibrating tables using various power tools. @dramamask
@dramamask 4 жыл бұрын
There's obviously something not level. It's not rocket science and you just need to put your slabs in the molds where it is level. Your molds might be off, but I can't see that being the problem unless they are distorted or something. Everything can be checked beforehand with a spirit level and you can see the level of the concrete when you have poured.

My experience with the 123 concrete formula is that 48-72 hours is about right. Also, to save a few $, a good bonder agent is just white wood glue and water. (Trade secret from years back)

How does the washing up liquid affect the concrete?
@0ldw3lshm4n
@0ldw3lshm4n 4 жыл бұрын
@@dramamask It acts as a plasticiser but it weakens the mix. Why not use a proper plasticiser? Also you put wayyy too much in. If a bricklayer was caught on site doing this he would be sacked lol. If you lay bricks with it, they can be lifted off and you can scratch the mortar out eaisly. Tray scratching surface of slabs see how strong it is. You can get plasticiser which adds water protection, use that.

@@0ldw3lshm4n I've worked with builders on building sites and I put the appropriate amount of washing up liquid in the mix. I'm asking you how does the washing up liquid affect the mix, which I'd like to hear the answer to. The slabs in the video turned out great and were rock solid then and are rock solid now, so there wasn't any problems with a weak mix. PS: I actually use plasticizer now as I want an optimum mix. I would still like to know from you 'how' the washing up liquid affects the mix and any links to back up what you have said about washing up liquid affecting the mix. Then, if this info is correct, I will pin it to the comments as useful and important informaton.

@@0ldw3lshm4n I looked online about this and there seems to be a lot of conflicting information. I might make a video about this topic soon. Btw, this concrete slab video was made nearly 3 years ago and the slabs are still as hard as nails and no corrosion whatsoever! :) So, the evidence at this end, shows that there has been no, or at most, negligible effect on the concrete slabs made in this video.

I was just thinking how the mix was just on the wet side, but probably still okay, and then you said, "A touch more water' before turning it into soup!!! Seriously, you weakened the end result by about 40% by making it so wet!
@dramamask
@dramamask 6 жыл бұрын
The mix wasn't like 'soup' at all. The mix didn't move when mixed and was relatively firm and if anything more of a slurry, if you watched the video. Speeding the video up while pouring into the molds onto the vibrating table may have given the illusion that it was a thinner mix. The slabs made in this video are rock hard and are still rock hard. No indication of weakened concrete whatsoever.
@rustyfox2794
@rustyfox2794 6 жыл бұрын
If I watched the video? What, do you think people come to KZbin and just randomly leave comments on videos they haven't watched? Of course I watched the video. I'm talking about when you were mixing it in the tub. When using a vibrating table you make the mix much drier than usual. Try it - mix some so that it looks like it's way too dry. Put it into a mold on the vibrating table, and watch it liquefy before your eyes. When you turn off the vibration, it will go solid. When it was like soup was when it was on the vibrating table, and it did run like soup!
@dramamask
