#CosplayTutorial2022
Great for cosplay, D&D Games and any other adventures you may be going on.
This cloak pattern is designed in a way that you do not over buy fabric and where almost all the fabric gets used. There are very few scraps.

Just used this tutorial last night for my Renaissance Faire cloak. I've never used a french seam or sewn clothing for myself. The cloak came together in just a few hours and looks amazing! So flowy and mysterious feeling. Thank you so much for this concise and easy to follow tutorial! (Really glad I didn't buy that $8 pattern from the box stores!)

This is probably my favorite tutorial on a cloak i've seen. Any advice on altering this for child size?
@AnnieChieDesigns
@AnnieChieDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Gosh thanks! And to alter to a child's size, just make the measurements smaller. Neck hole could be about the same, but the lenght/circle radius just needs to be smaller, and same with hood
@Duskkit
@Duskkit 3 жыл бұрын
I have a (not homemade) cloak that was probably meant to be full length for an eight year old, and is instead waist length on me; I absolutely love it. I suggest that those who are making cloaks for children intentionally make the hood with enough room for an adult head to fit (since you'll likely want it to flare dramatically on the child's head anyway, there's room to work with here), attach it to a full size neckline, and add a band of fabric to create a drawstring channel. Thread a ribbon through, sew it to one end of the channel, pull the other end until the neckline is gathered to an appropriate size for the child, sew in place on that side too. You can leave excess ribbon on each end for ties, or cut off the ribbon and add a different closure method. Then, the neckline can be re-expanded later and the cloak winds up not being outgrown but instead simply becoming a shorter cloak with less dramatic hood. (Another option if you're using ribbon ties: instead of sewing the ribbon directly to the ends of the drawstring channel, sew a button just inside each end of the channel, and put buttonholes at various places along the ribbon. That way there's no need to rip out thread later. Of course, only do this if the child can be trusted to not undo the buttons willy-nilly and cause the ribbon to be drawn into the channel or even slide out entirely. Rethreading the ribbon would be just as annoying as ripping out the thread...)

thank you for this tutorial !! just out of curiousity, why did you use french seams ? is it necessary to use one or does it just provide a better finish ? because if I'm honest I had a hard time understanding how they work and I'd love to take on this project!
@AnnieChieDesigns
@AnnieChieDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Your welcome! I use french seams because they are a simple finish to the seam. If seams are left raw and flat without a finish of any kind they fray. Lots of people will finish seams by serging the edges, or use pinking shears, ect so they can do one normal flat seam. But I wanted this tutorial to be doable without fraying for anyone, including those without the tools for the serging or pinking. If you want to try other seam finishes, a felled seam is also a very good idea. And if fraying doesn't bother you then a normal flat seam without any finishes is an option!

I’m going to try and make this cloak today... wondering if you have any tips for adding in a lining to the whole garment?
@AnnieChieDesigns
@AnnieChieDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
For lining the whole thing, you can skip the french seams and make regular flat seams instead. And the lining should be the same exact shapes. Sew both together as normal, skip the hems. Instead put good sides of fabric together and sew all around, leaving a hole. Pull inside out, and close the hole, press. And it's a lined cloak

Thank you for this tutorial! I’m having a slight problem with my cloak however and I was wondering if you knew the solution! The cloak itself is made out of this ribbon material, it’s stretchy but it has some weight to it, when I tried wearing the cloak, the bottom part didn’t reach the floor because the fabric was collecting in the middle and it almost looks like a droopy bag 😅 I have some ideas to fix this but I would like to hear what you would do before I try anything- Thanks! :)
@AnnieChieDesigns
@AnnieChieDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
I wish I could help more but I can't really tell what the issue is from your description. Collecting in the middle - did you line the garment or was it caught on something? Or was it the way the fabric itself was behaving?
@zacurragazzo9432
@zacurragazzo9432 3 жыл бұрын
@@AnnieChieDesigns I have not lined it yet and I believe it’s how the fabric is behaving, the fabric is solid white rib knit if that helps, and instead of the fabric touching all the way to the floor, it almost folds in on itself and gets stuck near my lower back. I’m not sure if I didn’t something wrong but the fabric curls instead of going straight down 😥 I have a feeling that it has to be something with the material itself and if that’s the case I might have to line it with something that is more stiff or cut the cape and sow it back in a way that it keeps it’s shape better- hope this helps a little better!

What if your 6ft and the 60” wide doesn’t touch the ground? do you have to sew 2 60” wide together and cut to length?

You could do that or it could be a great opportunity to use some trims to make it longer. Or see if you can find fabric that is extra wide.
