4:55 Barry is actually right, "refried beans" are generally only fried once, the name comes from a mistranslation/misunderstanding of "refrito" which means "re-heated" in Spanish not "re-fried" as the first time they are cooked they are boiled/steamed generally. Thus once fried they have only been fried once.
@IamQED
@IamQED Жыл бұрын
Not quite; "frito" does mean fried. However, the prefix "re-" is sometimes used as an intensifier in Spanish, so a better translation would "well-fried beans".
@toni_go96
@toni_go96 Жыл бұрын
I think the reason Ben gave the camera that look is because in early sorted videos (like multiple sorted videos) they've talked about how refried beans are actually only fried once and it's a mistranslation.
@esmeecampbell7396
@esmeecampbell7396 Жыл бұрын
@@IamQED Wikipedia says either, but seeing as refried beans are generally only warmed through in oil rather than really crispy like deep fried food is I think "re-heated" is a more accurate translation. "Well fried beans" would be far more crispy than refried beans are generally served.
@danielamaterna7348
@danielamaterna7348 Жыл бұрын
Here in Ecuador refrito refers to the base mix for many meals, including onion, tomato, pepper, sometimes garlic, carrots, etc. like an Italian sofrito or French mirepoix. Most bean dishes here e.g. 'menestra' have a variation of refrito added to them, so I'm assuming it's similar all across Latin America and probably why the name exists.

@@captainace1277 Mike got screwed by the time restriction in the apron battle based on Barry getting the same badge twice and not having another removed that they said should have been. So the entire event was unfairly biased to begin with. Also over the years I have watched sorted, Barry has never done exceptionally well in general. Ben seems to almost always be biased in his favour based on the flavour profile and not how good the cooking was. Every so often he comes up with a good thing, but when that fails then the result is below average. Jamie and Mike both tend to get average to above average more often than not, so unless it's a measure of their absolute top potential only, then Barry never deserved the apron. I guess you could say he was better on the day, but that is meaningless if he averages below the others on most other days.

The trick with hash is to start browning the potatoes in butter or lard first, and once you've started to get color on opposite sides of each chunk, in goes the beef, which will cool the pan and keep things from burning. Once you have some crisp on the beef(I turn an edge over to see how it's doing), get a LARGE spatula, slide it under a section, lift and flip, repeating until everything in the pan as been flipped. Once the other side is crisped up, serve. You'll have to work out your own timings for the fried eggs, since every stove is different, and my gas range would do a faster job of it than that glass-topped heating coil range you've got in the studio.

Since I can't taste them 😪, I can only go by how I think they would taste and how they look. In my eyes and mind I would choose Jamie's dish as it looked very appetizing. I'm really enjoying the thought process that is going on now as opposed to years ago where there was a lot of "flapping". Good job to you both!

Is there any plans for in the future for Barry to lose his access to the Red Apron and one of the other normals get it? Depending on challenges or something

They stalled so much to give it to him after he won the badges challenges on like 3 separate occasions they’re probably stirring to take it away

You guys need to update Barry's title card in the photo montage to reflect his new sous chef position!

I feel like Barry's ingredients would have been great for a Thai green curry with the pea soup and beans, and salted olive fried rice! Add in some coconut milk and some sauteed onion and snap peas for more texture in the curry sauce, plus maybe a little red chili for heat, and you've got a perfect midweek meal!

I really respect Jamie's ability to see that what he was doing was not working and move it over to something that was ultimately won the competition. Was it messy? Oh yeah. Is it something I could do at home? Not a chance, I don't have that many pans and would have to do the washing between experimental stages.

Barry still has the "Normal" next to his name? Really? Recognize his sous chef badge and present him proudly!

Because he is still a normal and shouldn’t of won that sous chef apron being the weakest of the normals

@@tubbziMalone Gotta fully agree, here. Jamie is the embodiment of a "sous" chef, despite his audacity at times. Mike has the most desire to learn. Barry has the most talent, but doesn't apply himself hard enough.

You can put a titled badge on anything ... that doesn't actually change what it is. I feel like the editing department is waiting for him to actually show off any sous chef skills before they change the title.

I personally love sautéed olives. I've never covered them with flour first. Just a small amount of olive oil and heat. Super yum.

Ebbers had a minute halfway through the battle when he just looked done with life. It's nice that after all this time, the normals can still surprise and disappoint him.

I think we need a video where Jamie recreates(or improves) that dish with the same ingredients in half the time and a third of the panic :)

that's actually a really interesting concept, the same format again for the normals, and then a chef to come in and use the remaining three tins in a shorter amount of time.

Had I drawn Barry's can hand, I would have incorporated the pea soup into pan flatbread, sliced the olives, drained the beans, and used it all in some cold salad wraps with whatever else I could find, plus a creme or vinaigrette to whip up, maybe both. Make the dough, let it sit, process the rest and gather ingredients, slap up some fry bread, while prepping saladish things, and assemble.

Hearing about the amount of dishes used was interesting and gave me an idea; what about a battle around the amount of dishes used? Least dishes wins. Or a Chef vs Normal where the chef only gets 1 pan and the normal has access to as many as they want. At the end you can show the dish and the amount of washing up that needs done from it.
