I’m so glad I found your channel. Made me realise I had forgotten my ingenuity years ago. If we couldn’t get a tool we used to make it back in the day. I’m going to start doing this again. Thanks for the inspiration. 👍🏻

Nice idea and easy set up. The only thing I would add is possibly a drill bit stop when turning the drill in the wood fixture and grinding it down. Could help to keep it set to one distance. Thumbs Up!

I find it interesting that without a single word you managed to take a lot of the "magic" out of how to sharpen a drill bit. I'w watched a number of videos where they used a lot of graphics and long explanations to show how to do this, and yet they didn't manage to really show what it all was about. In this video there are only a few seconds where you show the sharpening of the new edge on that drill bit and that was all that was needed to demonstrate so much of what they were trying to teach in those other videos.

I have a small lathe. Did the job with an angle grinder and brand new disc. (Protect the bed from grit with a cloth) Could also use a power drill to spin the the drill being sharpened.

This is how a video should be made. Showing what you have made and its use, then showing how to make it. Great video. The only gripe I have is I was taught never to use the side of the grinding wheel. Is that nonsense or have the rules changed I am an old timer! Thanks for sharing 👍☺️

This is awesome. You are a genuine genius if there ever was one. Question? Are the drill bushings hardened?
@f.d.6667
@f.d.6667 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think they are, simply b/c of their thin walls. Heat treating leads to deformation and there is a risk of over-heating of small parts unless you give them bulk treatment. Seamless SS or mild steel tubes should work fine if you ream them first (slowly, lots of oil - not WD40!). Many wood drills are just CV steel (as opposed to HSS) and a welding seam would damage them rather quickly. Proper drill bushings are hardened and have a fillet on the entry side. There are many places to get them from, ranging from McMaster to AliExpress. I usually try to find NOS on eBay or Craigslist...

@davebashford3753
@davebashford3753 4 жыл бұрын
white and pink are aluminum oxide and are especially for grinding high-speed steel w/o overheating the steel. Some say the pink wheels are less friable therefore don't cut as well, but will last longer. Others say there isn't a noticeable difference. I have pink on my grinder I use for sharpening my lathe tools and for minor general grinding. But I don't have much experience with anything else.

The grinded part looks better than expectet, but in the end aou see the problem: the standard-drill is to short. You couldn't add a drill stop. Even without such a stop, the little holes are not completely through the material. The only thing you could do is setting the jig for thinner material.

The small hole is not supposed to be all the way through the workpiece, but guides the self drilling pocket hole screw through, I think.
