Just a note: this is not only amazing because it is sustainable but its also an AMAZING idea to make these jacket for the homeless or those in need of a warm jacket but cant afford a proper one. I also live in Toronto and the temperatures here are insane!! This is a wonderful idea!

Yes, in fact there is a designer who does that, his name is Bas Timmer. He makes jackets/ slepping bags from tents left in music festivals and others, and gives them to homeless people!!

Awesome! Crazy... this is brand new too. I've been wanting to make fleece (or I think it's called mink or mole skin or something new I saw at Hobby Lobby that was softer than fleece) lined puffer pants and socks since they're expensive. I lost a bid on a sleeping bag I was looking at darn... was a zero degree bag too. Oh well... I'll get there eventually. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Wendy! The next time you sew something thats thicker/with multiple layers you might want to use a walking foot. I just got one and it has been a game changer! It’s typically used for quilting when sewing layers together. Hope that helps!

At least wear it yourself for a winter first to check if it's actually practical. Most summer sleeping bags are not warm and are particularly miserable if they get wet. I'd want to actually wear one through the winter and test it before I gave it to someone, especially someone actually vulnerable.

I learned recently that ribbon like that is actually petersham rather than grosgrain, because it has a woven (wavy) edge instead of a bound edge. It can be steamed into a curve easily, so it was used a lot in millinery for hat bands. (Sorry, this is what happens when I find an unfamiliar word in a historical novel and fall into a Google hole looking it up.) This was such a fun project, I really enjoyed it. Do you think you will actually wear this? I love the zipper you chose! I think I would have added a hood if there was enough fabric left.

I love making new things from old. I suggest going though linen closets to find old pillowcases, curtains and towels or whatever else you find interesting and seeing where the fabric leads you. It challenges your creativity and skill, and is "sustainable"!

This is a great, imaginative project. I've watched a bunch of your vids. I have a tip for seam ripping that will save you a ton of time, and perhaps make seam ripping less hated. I'm a man who sews. I make stuff for my family. When my mom taught me to sew, she showed me the traditional way to rip a seam. I figured out a different, much faster way when I was in the Air Force and needed to change stripes and patches on uniforms. Five uniforms make 10 patches just when I made rank. You need a sharp x-acto knife or equivalent. I prefer a No. 10 blade for this. Begin by spreading the seam apart to begin exposing the thread. Slice the thread with the x-acto, like a surgical incision. This will allow the seam to separate some, making it easier to pull the seam apart further, making subsequent cuts easier and easier. When you pull the seam apart after a slice or three, several stitches at a time come out, speeding it up even further. Hold the item down with the hand you use to make the cuts, while the other hand gently separates the seam. This makes taking apart even the heaviest seams and thread very easy. Obviously, be careful to not cut the base fabric. Practice once or twice before ripping something important.

I love reuse. I spent 45 yrs doing costumes for a rural community theatre. My place of shopping was Goodwill thrift stores and rummage sales.. We had almost no budget for costumes...sheets pillow cases, table clothes , bug skirts , anything with gobs of material to work with..my favorite was making things from the embossed shower curtains. I made Rupenzel a beautiful Renaissance gow. From 3 shower curtains. Next time I see a decent sleeping bag I'm going to try it, then donate it to an organization that helps the homeless...a perfect jact for them warm and cold resistant

do you know you can rip out seams really fast by just putting the ball part in near the seam allowance and gliding it through the seam (cant explain in text but theres a video online) it doesnt work for EVERYTHING but it works for a lot of things and not that many people know about it

You might also want to look into a blade style seam ripper. Dritz and Fiskars make them. I picked one up when I put new sleeves on a dress shirt for my husband and had to seam rip serged edges. Total game changer. I hardly ever use my regular seam ripper anymore.

Fun fact, that’s how you’re supposed to use them. Picking individual stitches is for hhose times when you need to be precise, like on shirt collars or tight seam allowences. Need to rip a longer seam? Grab a good hold and do it in one swoop. Remember to tension the fabric as you do this, like under your foot or between your body and a table while pulling on it with your other hand.

Great idea I want to try. Tip for pulling heavy thick fabric through the machine is to pull the fabric in back AND the front of the needle. This stretches the fabric taut then pull gently so the needle doesn’t bend.
