Thanks. This is a practical, simple, but well executed tool build! I plan to build it. I had to laugh when you said that you could hand sand it because I have few power tools and nothing like yours so ill be hand sanding it !😄Enjoyed your professional easy delivery.

Not being rude, but you got paddled in 8th grade? I'm pretty sure I was challenging the principal to fight in the parking lot at that age. I'm not sure which story is worse. I guess the moral of the story is that kids are punks. Also, I thought that looked a lot like a paddle. I'll 100% be teasing with my son when I end up building this.

Not annoying at all. I want to know when somethings not right, so I can fix it. Sounds like the laminations are separating on the strop. Time to whip up a new one.

What side of the leather did you glue DOWN ?
@homebuiltshop4 жыл бұрын
For these, I glued down the rough side but you can use either side. I like to polish on the smooth side as it seems a little finer. You could even make one that is 2 sided with one side rough, and one side smooth.

Dude, enjoyed the video. I've got my great grandfather's shaving razor sharpening stone that's made into a hand carved box. It HAS a leather strop built on, like you did yours in the video. Not sure how old it is, but he died a month short of the end of the First World War. How can I rehab the leather etc to make it useable? Thx, Tony Parr
@homebuiltshop4 жыл бұрын
Thats awesome you got your Great Grandfathers shaving things. For the strop, I would think you could use some leather dressing, or neatsfoot oil to recondition the leather. It might take a few times for it to soak in enough conditioner. I have always liked Lexol leather conditioner. It seems to really soften it up well.

Jack Miller with epoxies, it’s basically just a ratio or balance of open working time and tensile strength that you need for the project at hand.

@homebuiltshop4 жыл бұрын
Thank You and Welcome. The template I used was just one I quickly came up with. Its not listed on the site. The strop dimensions are approximately 18" x 2" x 3/4". For the handle, you can make it whatever shape feels good to you. I tapered mine in to about 1" wide and a little bit longer than the width of my hand. I hope that helps. Have some fun in shaping it.

Would be nice to know dimensions!
@Danielson18184 жыл бұрын
With all due respect, you don't need dimensions. Cut the board to a length just a bit longer than how far you would stroke the knife. It's supposed to be custom made for your needs, then just cut a handle and viola. Having the board be an inch wider or longer isn't going to make much difference on the actual function.
@1cleandude4 жыл бұрын
4”x20”x3/4” would have sufficed!

@@1cleandude I can only imagine how anxious you get about food recipes online. Lol... I am a visual learner, so it's easy for me to watch and follow. You are probably better off with a manual, blog, or other written material, but I promise you'll be ok building something close, as long as you know how to use the strop.
