Make a Panel Quilt that Doesn't Look Like a Panel Quilt

Make a panel quilt that doesn't look like a panel quilt. I LOVE panels because they make beautiful focus features in a quilt and they make a quilt come together so quickly. Sometimes you want to use a panel without it looking like you used a panel. I'm reluctantly (LOL) cutting them up so they don't look like panels. And you don't have to use a panel for this technique - you can use a fabric that you like and don't want to cut up into little pieces. If you need to quickly create a beautiful gift, watch this video and learn how to make a panel quilt that doesn't look like a panel quilt.

The only thing I probably would have done differently was to cut the smashing pieces narrower. Have you ever seen Donna Jordan’s tutorials? She’s from Jordan Fabrics and has a great panel tutorial. I have totally avoided panels because I didn’t have a clue what to do with them that I would like and wouldn’t be the same old same old. This window idea is perfect! There is a place in Fancy Gap right near the NC/VA border that Carrie’s hundreds of panels - it’s time I took a trip up the interstate 77 and see what fun I can find!!!! I think I am the queen of mistakes. LOL. I sewed one of the borders twice on the same side. So it was a double border of the yellow with the small flowers. It looked pretty good, but then I remember I didn't have enough fabric to do that all the way around and out came the seam ripper. I could seriously stress test those things for someone. LOL. Very nice indead! About the grinch, next time try to position him on the side, (right side is where our eyes go) like he is really looking through the window, and his whole head will show. I can tell that you like symmetry, me too… but sometimes it makes sense to give it up 😉

Maybe "try out" 1/2 inch sashing strips on top of the panel first to see what will be lost in the 1/4 inch seams then arrange the number or shape of your window panes.
