Make a Plywood Coffee Table - Rockler Plywood Challenge

When watching woodworking videos I like to look out for the moment where I'd mess up if i was doing the same task. In this case i think I'd have built the legs up unevenly and then run out of plywood. At some point I would have had a disagreement with a neighbour about the noise I was making. You did a great job, inspirational.

Thanks, Simon! There were plenty of places I was worried about goofing this one up. Stacking the legs was one, making a mistake on the pattern was definitely a concern, too. Luckily my neighbors were cool, and didn't mind the noise. I kept it to reasonable hours, to be safe.

I love how it has a delicate nature but is clearly very sturdy. Doesn’t look super blocky. Only thing I would have added would be a shelf at the bottom for magazines or a plant, or to store your laptop. Maybe hide a power strip on it to make a charging station.

All those are good ideas! I left the bottom open so our dog could continue to hang out underneath the table, especially if you're snacking, that's the best place to hide and hope for crumbs!

Outstanding project. I'd love to see how this would look if you used Baltic Birch plywood. No voids. Top quality veneers. Exterior-grade adhesive throughout. It's an exceptional material for stacking plywood. Costs a bit more, but worth it if you want it to be a stunning piece of furniture (or artwork).

Dan Limbach Thanks Dan! And Baltic Birch probably would have cranked up the aesthetic a bit, but this was cheaper for a project that I wasn't sure I'd be happy with at the end of it

Great work indeed and its beautiful. The only concern that I have is: There should be a support in the middle of bottom oblong railing. People, when sit nearby, they always stretch out their legs and rest them on lower bar of table. Since its a plywood make, the wood strength is not as strong as other wood species so it will be a good idea to have a support/shoe in the middle. This will also add beauty to your marvelous creation I reckon.

Thanks for the kind words! That's a good suggestion. For our needs, and where the table sits, that's not a real concern. I usually rest my feet on the top of the table 😅. Alternatively, if you want to beef that up, do two layers for that those bars instead of one.

I don't have the exact dimensions handy, but the top was just about 2' by 4', and I believe it's about 18" tall. If you make it, I'd love to see how yours turns out!

I really love the table top. An incredibly gorgeous design. I understand that you were doing the plywood challenge so i get why the legs are plywood, but if that wasn't a constraint I myself would have gone with solid wood for the base. Subscribed! Fortunate Woodcraft Thanks! If it weren't for the challenge, I probably wouldn't have made any of this, so I'm glad they did it! It took me a while to come up with how to do the base at all, solid wood would have been nice, and easier, but I really like the look of it how it is. 😁

Oh man I do not recall. The little pieces were the same length as the thickness of the plywood I used. I wanna say the longer pieces for the top were 3 inches? Right around there, so then the medium ones would be 1.5 inches. I think.

I really love this, especially the top, that looks superb. Not seen anything like it done before. Great video, thanks for posting. From watching, I wonder if you'd have been better off building most of the legs separately in a long corner jig before gluing to the table. Could have cleaned up the edges on the table saw before gluing on. But then I've never made anything even close to as good as this, so probably not one to take advice from!

Such a neat idea. If someone would have told me to make a table out of plywood, I would have never thought of that. Making the plys the feature has a really cool look. Two questions. It looked like you ripped the whole sheet of plywood at the beginning and then brought out more for the legs, so was this more than one sheet of plywood? Second question, where do you get those pants!

I originally ripped the plywood into two pieces, to make ripping those strips a bit easier. So at the beginning, that me just ripping down one of the pieces, then I rip the other when I start on the legs, because I wasn't sure how wide I was going to want those strips at the beginning. As for the pants, I'm assuming you're referring to the orange ones? Those I got for Christmas a while ago. Never knew I wanted them until I had them, haha!

Good job. My concern is the bottom rails. Are they strong enough in case someone rests their leg on them.

Thanks, Bobby! And those bottom rails have had my foot resting on them quite frequently since this thing has been in our living room. They do have some flex to them, but, so long as you don't try to stand on them, they seem to be fine to use as a foot rest.

Thanks! Hadn't really thought about it, but because of how tedious it was, I don't think I'd do it again for less than like $300, and that's just a quick thought. Don't know how much it would actually be if I did the math, but I'd charge extra because of the hassle 😋

Wonderful project! What exactly are you doing with the brown powder (sawdust?) and glue? Is that to make some putty mixture to patch chipout?

Goatnumber12 Thanks! And yes, that's exactly what it was for. It was sawdust from all the sanding I had to do, and I used it to fill any gaps from where I didn't clamp tight enough, or there was chipout.

Unfortunately I built that before I started making videos. But, I based it largley on a video by Mark over at Gunflint Designs. What is the thickness of your ply and what are the meserment of its pieces

I made this with 3/4" plywood. I do not recall the exact size of the pieces. The smallest ones are just as long as the plywood is thick. And the bigger pieces were between 2½" and 3", I think.

I think I did it over about 2 weeks. An hour or two here and there. If I had to guess, probably 15-20 hours, at least...

Hello Bear Maked. I just came across you're video of the plywood coffee table. (June 1, 2018) I Love the look of the top. My wife thought it was beautiful. Now she wants me to build one. Oh no. Would really Love to give it a shot the top part only maybe. I would really like to know the dimensions of the pieces. Tried it myself but did not turn out well. Would you be willing to give me the dimensions? You know, Happy Wife Happy Life.

Thanks for the kind words, Eugene! I believe the long pieces of the top were 5 inches, and the short pieces that ran perpendicular to those should be 23/32 of an inch, but the best way to do it is to use a piece of the plywood up against your blade, and the set your stop block right against that piece, so your measurement is exact. I have it set up at the 1:47 mark in the video, but I didn't show the actual set up for those cuts. Let me know if you need more info!
