Fire Extinguisher Air Tank Video: • Fire extinguisher port...
Tank pressure ratings for these are in excess of the valve 375psi safety blow off . These 20 &30lb tanks are dot4ba240 rated which have a service pressure of 240psi and are hydro tested to 2x that(480psi). Compare that to a store bought portable air tank with a max service pressure of 125psi and no DOT rating.
Working with pressure vessels is always dangerous. Dented, rusted or damaged tanks are obviously a poor idea to use. Don't do anything you saw someone else do on the internet.
FREON/HELIUM TANKS: Those are too thin to use in my opinion. Propane tanks are tested to 480psi. Freon/helium tanks only to 180psi. Propane tanks are heat treated to anneal the steel so they don't fatigue and fracture after repeated flexing from being filled and emptied. Freon/Helium are not required to have this done due to their one time use. You can read more about this with their Dept of Transportation ratings: Freon/Helium tanks are single use "DOT-39" rated.

KZbin has been invaluable to me. From fixing my cars to fixing my 'broken' TV, amongst many other things. That being said, there has been no other channel more useful to me than this. And I have NEVER used any of your tips.....YET! But I know when I do run into a problem, I'll know where to go and I'll feel more confident than ever that I'll be about to fix, solve, or remedy the problem. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I'm subscribed to a fair amount of KZbin; however, none of which get me more excited when I meant alerted to post. Thanks again. Have a great one.

I'm still using the tip of applying used motor oil on wooden projects instead of paint, which wasn't staying on sometimes. I've further learned to soak small enough pieces for 24 hours. And I already had 55 gallons of used oil. The 5 pound tanks are great for small woodburning stoves too. And I'm impressed by How Much you know, Moe. You have to be 200 years old! Thanks for All the information 👍

Pro tip with the propane tank! While you are purging it several times turn the tank upside down! As propane is heavier than air it will purge it out faster! That is what I did with mine years ago and it worked great! I carry my tank in my truck every day as a portable back up!

The pressure rating for propane tanks is WAY higher than for air, which is why they are so heavy even empty......my compressor only goes to 120 psi, so not worried about blowing the propane tank, my other air tank....yeah, I wouldn't go above 120 140 ish with it.....sure it's an air tank, but...its old, and just don't trust it....so I never go above 90 with it......with the propane tank.....no worries at all....

Great idea on grabbing the old grill hose and regulator. The last one I made , I wrestled the valve out while holding the tank in the wood splitter. It tossed that valve and plumbed in a 3/4" ball valve and all the other fittings to attach a pressure gauge , hose , shrader valve. It ended up being a messy looking rig. I love how simple yours is.

Your write up is the first I've seen. which references the helium tanks The manifold incorporates a relief valve, a pressure gauge and a Schrader fill valve.

I've been doing this for years. Have the exact same double quick connect hanging on mine. Be aware, some tanks have a safety check flow tube under the valve in the tank. Similar to the ball on a shop vac. It is designed to stop the flow of gas over a certain rate as would happen if a hose burst or something. The sudden rush of air forces a ball bearing up against the seal and stops the gas from escaping. This isn't desirable for an air tank. I had to remove the valve and cut off the safety tube. I think I flushed it out with hot soapy water too...mine has zero "propane" smell now...but that was 20 years ago

You're absolutely right the 10% bleed off. The old style has this as well and was supposed to tell the operator when to stop filling the tank(when liquid came out). They rarely did and a little more liquid propane got pushed in. Fine if it's not hot outside but no so much if it was a sunny 100F day and the propane has no where to expand. RVs with built in tanks are exempt from the new laws and consequently my 87 Toyota Motorhome has a tank that they keep trying to overfill. I have to keep a good eye on them while they're filling it as I've had the 375psi safety pop off exhaust propane before.

An old engineer friend set up two such tanks for me back about 2000, maybe a couple of years apart. The older one that has been cycled much more long ago lost any trace of propane odor - this one is kept at the house, and I use it to keep the tires on the cars at home quickly topped off. The other tank is kept off-site at storage where I garage my 4 Runner, and it is cycled much less often - I can still smell a trace of propane. I did have some concerns about the interaction of tire rubber and that residual propane, and I did eventually have a freeway-speed tire failure on the 4 Runner in 2008, but I really doubt the residual propane caused the failure. I was concerned about water buildup in these, so before the next fill on each, I will try turning them upside down - thanks for the tip 👍🏻

Well. This old dog learned something new after working so many years in the propane industry. P.O.L. Was named for Prest-O-Lite and not “Put On Left” as we always called them. And some people will use the scientific name of Ethanethiol, instead of the more common name ethyl mercaptan. Either way the stuff has a stench that doesn’t fade away and an old tank/cylinder can actually build up a residue of it over time. I still miss that job, that is until I have to drive to Toronto for some reason and realize how bad the traffic is there now.

The chemical that gives propane and Natural gas it’s smell is actually ethyl mercaptan. It is also used as stench gas in underground mines to alert employees to evacuate, and it stays in your clothes and hair and on your skin. The best way to get the smell off is a soak in baking soda water, a rinse, and a soak in white vinegar water. Works for getting the smell out of clothes and off of skin.

Did this back in the 90's after tired of our local shop doing a half-azz job seating our tires on the rim. Tires were ok for a little bit and then all of a sudden have a flat tire fill it up and then have another flat tire. Kept thinkin I got another nail or something but then filled the tires back up again, spay a little water around the bead, and when I seen bubbles around them I knew what he had to of done or didn't do. I took the tires off and sure enough the jerk ripped the bead on 2 of them and then other 2 tires he didn't even clean the rim around where the bead seats. From here on out I started doing my own tires and made the propane air tank which has saved me quite a few times over the years

When you need a bit of extra capacity from your compressor, add a few of these and you'll have enough air for a good impact or something. Beauty of quick release fittings.

I am planning to build a shop compressor with a Campbell Hausfeld tank I found. I have got an antique paint compressor that will be very cool, because it runs quietly, not like the modern oilless ones out there, with their teeth- grinding racket they produce. Mine will be...Ka-chuk, ka-chuk, ka-chuk. Nice. Just need a few more components and I`ll be set. I have got a number of the old grill tanks that still are charged with gas. Since I always grill with charcoal, I can never empty them, with a good conscience (I`m so cheap). Thanks for the sage tips.

Years ago around 1975 I had a garage and I needed compressed air when I went out to a puncture I converted the cylinder outlet very very easy to do to accept an airline and with a 19 kg cylinder I could undo all four wheels and Bolt them back up on one Full Cylinder with an air wrench

Instead of the back to back fittings, I put (and leave in it) an air chuck into the threads on the end of my air blow gun (not sure of the make), so I just click it in, and press the lever to have it fill.

Used to have 6 "hundred pound" tanks mounted upside down in my uncle's shop. Plumbed them all together because we didn't have enough quality power run to the shop to run the compressor. Ran a 3/8 air hose through 2" water line(buried) from the air compressor in a small shed next to the main power pole over there. Smelled like propane for over 10 years.

We loved to go tubing in the Oregon mountains in the winter, but you can't stuff inflated farm tractor tubes and kids in the camper shell. Now dad being a genius as he was, took some pipe fittings and adapted them to a full propane bottle, yes Propane not air. Toss the tubes, the kids and that bottle in the back and away we go. When we get there, Dad would inflate the tubes with Propane gas and send us on our merry way. After a great day of tubing, Dad just removed the valve stems and let the tubes deflate. Worked great but it stunk for awhile. Yeah one rule was. Keep the tubes away from the fire.

If want a real cool setup get ahold of an old aluminum forklift tank. They’re perfect. Light and super rugged and they have multiple bungs. You can have a schrader fill valve, pressure gauge and the original valve with a quick coupler. The safety ring is big enough to coil the airline inside and keep it all together to throw in the back of the truck.

If you are concerned you could fill the first couple of times with inert welding gas like CO2 or Argon or even Nitrogen (from the tire store) that way any propane left inside would not be in an explosive air/oxygen mix. Propane does't smell that's why a stink is added so you know if there is a leek.

My Freon tank portable air tank lasted until thieves got it, used a store bought manifold that were common 30 years ago. Made another out of a helium party tank using a manifold off a dead air compressor, had to drill out the valve, gave that to someone. I like the light weight of the Freon and helium tanks.
@sixtyfiveford

The lightweight is nice. You just have to be careful as they only test those tanks to 180psi vs 480psi of a propane tank.
