Quick question: you didn't happen to touch on how you set the display settings or how you rotated the video, could you elaborate on those points? Thanks! Im going to be building one this weekend!
@thegeekgarage2 жыл бұрын
I rotated the video in the editing program before I exported the file to put on a thumb drive to play on the TV via it's USB port. The settings will vary on each TV, so play with it by eye, I mostly adjusted the backlight setting to reduce the "TV screen" glow look - dimming that made the image flatter and more realistic. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other Qs :)

I am curious as to what you used to loop and play the video to the tv. you mentioned a memory stick etc
@thegeekgarage2 жыл бұрын
The TV I used happened to have a feature to play video clips from the USB stick drive. I designed a loop point in the video where the screen is just the background (at the beginning the character enters frame and at the end he exists frame after being poisoned). I looped that vide in the dit and I believe the TV's native movie player had a repeat function (look for the looping arrows icon that most music apps use for repeat). Hope that helps!

Hey so what filters do they use in the patent?
@thegeekgarage Жыл бұрын
Here's how the filters are described on page 8 of the patent (link is in video desc): For example, a combination of physical filters or panels and a coating may be provided and configured to be attachable to a display (e.g., an HDTV). To reduce light emission, a neutral density filter may be provided, which may be further configured to modify the intensity or emission of all wavelengths or colors of light equally, while keeping constant the hue of color rendition. A second layer including an amber filter may be mounted to the first layer and configured to allow yellow or amber light to pass through to give the image a "dated' appearance. A third layer including a polycarbonate resin thermoplastic treated with an acrylic glaze, the acrylic glaze forming a fourth layer, may include a pigment Suspended in an acrylic polymer emulsion and may be configured to give the image a "brushed-on' look while also allowing ambient light to reflect off the fourth layer, as the light would generally reflect off of a true oil painting.

For many years I have been puzzling over how to do this effect. I think you have done a great job. I wonder what extra those filters add in the patent..
@thegeekgarage2 жыл бұрын
The ND (neutral density) filter would cut down the light. The colored one would provide a tiny/hue prolly to warm it up since a tv screen emits blue light etc…. That’s my guess.

I’m so curious if this would work with a projector.
@thegeekgarage Жыл бұрын
My concern would be that the room would need to be really dark and the projection would be hard to lower the light level and still see the image because lowering the TV’s backlight is one of the main things that make it feel less like a screen and more like a real painting - but I would LOVE to know if it works. If you try it out, please keep me updated!

How did you attach the frame to the tv? I missed that part
@thegeekgarage2 жыл бұрын
I left that part up to the user based on how you will be using the setup - for instance, some might hide the TV inside the wall and mount the frame flush with the wall to increase the illusion that it is a flat painting (like they do on the ride). While others simply might just want to put it over the TV in which case you can build a smaller frame on the backside of the main frame that will fit the TV snugly within it. Then once the TV is mounted you can slide the whole thing onto the TV and it should hold itself in place - though I do recommend using some sort of safety feature to prevent the frame from falling off.

@thegeekgarage7 ай бұрын
Thanks!!! I kinda just eyeballed it since it will really depend on the TV and they all might be different. Lowering the backlight is the main thing that makes it less TV-like and more painting-like. Then you can mess with the brightness and sharpness. It’s best wait to do the settings until after you have the video made and playing. If there is a way that you can do a video or image with a motion capture feature that responds to the dialogues of your messages, you can attach the tv(s) to a surveillance system with a camera small enough to hide within the makeshift antique frame; that way if you’re ever away on a trip and need a house sitter, you can point out the transgressions of your orders for that house sitter; and their reaction to the moving portrait will be priceless and hysterical…err, perhaps I’ve said too much.

Did I miss something on how you created the video clip?
@thegeekgarage3 жыл бұрын
Nope, this tutorial is just about the painting build. I mentioned that I just bought a green sheet on Amazon and a costume and just filmed a quick clip, but you can make any footage that you want for the screen and play it on a loop. There's plenty of YT channels that cover green screen keying way better than I can, I mostly focus on handcrafted build tutorials.

@@iamfood4worms Yeah that's just a texture that I laid on top and changed the blending mode to one that looked best. I just found a free one online. @thegeekgarage2 жыл бұрын
@@Ventrue1830 No patents are really vague, I mostly just figured those out myself just thinking what would make it look less like a light emitting screen and more like a painting. Each TV will probably have different results so you'll have to play with the setting of whatever monitor you use. Hope that helps :)
@Ventrue18302 жыл бұрын

@thegeekgarage2 жыл бұрын
@@Ventrue1830 I mention then around the 1:30 mark, but they're the backlight, brightness, and color options. The backlight is most important because it's what gives off the light, so lowering that reduces the "screen look" and gives off more of a painting effect. Also adjusting the brightness and color settings to whatever looks best. You probably want the Cinema mode picture mode preset on. Hope that helps some :)

*not exactly what I expected.* If you want to make a moving portrait, you've got to think bigger and better, like if you knew someone was going to die in your family, you could make a moving portrait of them. Start by finding a thin TV that matches the dimensions you want, then add the frame and hidden light sensors on both sides of the painting corners. When it senses your presence, the screen will turn on and look at you from that direction and say to you, Have a nice day, welcome back, or just disappear to go out with you, and when you get back home, you can see your painting cooking a meal for itself with the groceries it bought from the shop. I myself would find that an interesting painting.
