When I was in the 4th grade, my parents were missionaries to West Africa. The local people were rice farmers whose staple diet was based on rice, and had a problem with aerial predators eating their unripe rice before it was harvested. The 10-12 year old boys would be stationed in the fields with their slings, and be responsible for guarding the fields from these predators. I have seen them successfully target the predators in flight from over 100 feet distances.

I have to try this and make me one. Some where I read to soak the leather in Olive Oil over night and the leather will be nice and soft. Thanks for the video.

That's what I did Keith. I soaked it in canola oil overnight. Soft as butter the next day!

Made many as a kid. Used old baseball gloves for the leather. The power and range is amazing. Used to throw rocks through bill board signs. The range is 4 or 5 times further than your arm alone can reach. Killed bats at night by putting driveway gravel in the pouch.

By casting shot at the same weight (9 ounces for me) you get more consistent accuracy. Practice in a mowed pasture or an unused football field and paint your shot white. (That makes it easier to recover practice shots , so you can sling them again.)

Great advice. Where do you get your stone?

If you go by what Goliath says about David coming at him with sticks, it looks like David may have had a staff-sling. Have you tried one? I can totally see how that could have done for a big Phillistine.

at the release end actually WANT it to fray. a whip crack is not what you want. a frayed end will prevent the loud crack that is high dB and alerts game if hunting.

Great tip thank you!!

Hate to be the guy to point this out... according to Goliath himself, 'Am I a dog, boy, that you come at me with a stick?' ... it was a staff sling.. makes sense to me, heavier projectiles with more raw kinetic energy available....

Great insight and maybe accurate.

Can anyone actually accurately hit things with these? Can you actually hunt with them or are they just for lobbing stones at enemy armies?
