Just came across your channel and "I Love it". I especially enjoy the fact that you explain everything you're doing and what products to use. No one else I've found does. Thank You

Thanks for sharing your excellent work! I saw a similar effort on RJB Woodturner where he drilled the initial blank 1/4" and assembled the segments on a 1/4-20 bolt - then tightened a nut down to compress the glue up for curing. I liked it and tried it and it worked quite well, but left a bit of mess on the bolt to clean up for reuse. After some thought, I bought a 1/4" dowel and did the glue up on that - that worked great! Of course, the dowel disappears in the turning, but it makes the glue up and handling the segments much easier for these old hands.

Great video thank you. Good to see when it goes a bit wrong. Wood has a mind of it’s own. Regards

Hi I just made one. Mine looked like a chess board I turned the second one 90 degrees the next the same as the first. Yours is a spiral, mine is a checker pattern. Mine turned out OK.

Doing a segmented pen with ebony and maple how do you keep sanding particles of the ebony attaching to the maple. Maple looks dirty after sanding.

I know you are going to save thst blank, i was thinking of what to use,mica powder was on the list, but black paint with some dark sawdust to make a paste, but i only seen it done, never did it myself,but I will one day. Have a great weekend........

Great looking pen! Enjoyed the video. A thought: I have been doing similar pens using 4 pcs of 3/8 inch thick countertop material.

Looks like excellent practice for your brick pen. Beautifully executed. I would love to come assist when you decide to make your brick pen.

+Michael Trent I was thinking that as I was making it. I really should have made ''this blank with thinner slices than 1/4". That would be great if we could build the brick blank together.

Would be glad to work as your support staff. It will be a complicated glue-up. I think the pieces should be 1/8" and glued into long strips. Once these are together, they can them be cut into 1/4" blocks to be made into a final pen blank . . . lots and lots of precise gluing. I'm ready when you are . . . I need a road trip. LOL

Beautiful job. I'm still pretty new to turning and I find it therapeutic. I've sold a couple of pens, but was curious to know how you would price a piece that you have spent this much time on like this one.
@LynnLaceyLLWW7 жыл бұрын
+Tim Karnes I never get my time back monetarily and it depends on the cost of the kit and complexity of the segmentation. As a rule $40 is a minimum for my segmented pens and up from there. Thanks for watching Tim.

Lynn, Do you find drilling using the lathe more accurate than using a drill press?

Hey Skip - I do find that the lathe is more accurate at last in my case. Thanks for watching

Mr.Lacey, well done Sir!. Questions: Being somewhat new to turning pens, ..Could you have used epoxy between the segments to give more working time and also to be able the compress the segments so the gap does not develop between the segments? Would the epoxy show between the segments once turned? Hoping for some of your immense knowledge! Thank you as always for the great knowledge!
@LynnLaceyLLWW7 жыл бұрын
Hey Mick - yes you can use what ever adhesive you are comfortable with. My problem here was when I cut the segments. I cut them on my band saw and should have used my segmenting sled on the table saw. That would have guaranteed square cuts and would have eliminated the CA or epoxy issue. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment

That's a beauty Lynn, thanks for showing, I'm going to try that. How do you sand it without colour bleed? 💕💕
@LynnLaceyLLWW7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Eric - I used a tip from Bob at RJB Woodturner and it worked great. When ready to sand, put one thin coat of thin CA glue on the blank then sand away. I tried it on this for the first time and had zero bleeding. Check Bob's channel out and thanks for watching.

Lynn, why is it that penturners always use CA to glue wood. What is the aversion to traditional white wood glue? I've dabbled in wood projects and white glue has always been what I've used and what most, if not all, traditional woodworkers use. And, do you think that if you'd used white glue and clamped the segments over the tube that gap might have been eliminated?
@LynnLaceyLLWW7 жыл бұрын
Hey Steve - I think CA is used for the most part to reduce time and you may have a point about reducing the gap.. Thanks for watching.
