I'm a carpenter turned commercial/industrial electrician and there's a lot of stuff I'm comfortable doing myself. Like, I might choose to pay someone else to do it but I know I could do it myself if I wanted to. A watertight, plumb, level, square tiled shower with the right floor slope is absolutely not one of those things. I'll get a pro any day of the week.

And just like that, I'm all caught up. The first EC video I saw was Extension Cord Pro Tips, dated August 25, 2020. I thought that was pretty slick, saw that the channel had some other videos I was interested in, and decided to watch everything from the beginning. (Probably skipped fewer than ten.) I initially decided to watch one video every day or two, but as the spec house started coming along I found that pace to be too slow, and finally, the day before the August 27, 2021 open house, I find myself with no more EC videos to watch. (I don't dare get started on EC2 because I'd get even less done around here than I do now.) So now I have subscribed and join the ranks of a million plus who anxiously look forward to notification of the next EC video. Many thanks to the Scott, Nate, and all the EC supporting cast and crew.

A tip for if you can't use a ready-made pan, and aren't experienced in those cement underfloors with the proper slope: get some osb or ply scraps, and make a grid with them on their side, sawing them to the slope required. Fill in the individual areas, remove the ply, and fill in the gaps left by the grid.

I like Schluter, it's very dependable. With that said, given the choice between Schluter and floating I'd float the pan and walls every time. I’ve been in the tile business for over 10 and a licensed tile contractor for three of them. I do like schluter products and I do use them often. In my humble and professional opinion you cannot beat using a pan liner or hot mop as a shower pan, 20 gauge self furred stucco netting and a mortar bed on which to set your tile system over. Schedule systems are great but I’m just a little partial to my ways beachside that’s the way I was taught and brought up. Thanks Scott for all the great videos. I've seen videos from tile and shower installers testing this product, and contrary to what EC claims, the thin set can actually transfer moisture to the back side. Those tests were on shower pans full of water for many hours, that's not something a shower will experience, but it is something to consider. The system is amazing, the thinset is the weak link.

Nice video Scott, your guy is very thorough. Every tile setter has his favorite. I prefer Wedi Shower Systems which I've been installing for 20 years. There are way fewer installation steps with Wedi, and it uses 100% waterproof urethane as an adhesive in lieu of thinset. Looks like Schluter copied Wedi on the wallboard, washers, & fasteners. Wedi also uses a foam pan with integral drain which weighs nothing compared to the mortar bed. In the end, the weak link in any system is human error, and they're all susceptible to that...

I took the class in 2008, and did my own bathroom shower. It is the best, no degrading at all. Your tile guy is very good. You where spot on with your explanation. One thing ,the reason you use un-modified thin set is that modified (thinset with latex glue in it) would not ever dry, because no air would get to it. Unmodified is pure portland cement and is exothermic. You can use modified if your are putting kerdi or detra to plywood, but that is the only place. There is no other system that will keep water vapor out of the walls.

A good installer can make any system work. A bad installer will screw up any system. Trust me, you want your installer to use the system he is experienced with. A topical waterproof membrane like hydroban, with fabric embedded in all corners is NOT inferior to the "hydrostatic pressure" barrier CLAIMED to keep water from seeping through the thinset in this installation, which is not actually waterproof, like he said. This "hydrostatic pressure" barrier is known to fail in flood tests all the time. The excuse these tile guys always give is "well the shower isn't a swimming pool, so it will never actually see this much water ever again"! Unfortunately, excuses won't keep your shower from leaking. Again, it's not the system, it's the expertise of the installer that is key.

Ok, I’ve got a question or observation or two about the floor area of the shower. Shouldn’t you do the floor area first and then put the wall system on top of the floor pan so the water doesn’t have a chance to run between the walls and the floor pan if any part of the system would shrink? I also didn’t see any membrane or water proofing on the floor between the subfloor and the floor pan of the shower. Isn’t that a normal practice for showers? I’m not trying to criticize or troll this video, I’m trying to learn the best way of building this with no problems or callbacks. Thanks for sharing and it’s looking great! Edit: Ok, I’ve watched more of the video now (I know I should watch the entire video before commenting) and I see that it’s an entire product that seals the whole area and waterproofs the entire room. But I’ll leave my questions up because I think they are valid building practices. I might be back after I watch the whole video. Edit: That’s really labor intensive, I didn’t realize the waterproof part of the system was the last layer, that explains most of what I was questioning. When I remodel the bathroom in my home I will use this system, I hope I find someone as talented as this guy is. But now I know how it’s done and I can make sure who ever I hire follows each step to the T. I still don’t like seeing the mud floor pan on the bare wood subfloor, the masonry against bare wood in a shower area just doesn’t seem right.

Get a bucket of RedGard and put it on the subfloor before the mud pan, imho. It's relatively cheap, smells horrible, and will ruin whatever roller you use to apply it, but I'd take that peace of mind any day. Sagging and damp subfloors are going to put my kids through college at the rate I'm repairing them between humid crawlspaces and inadequate waterproofing.

Schluter also shows just applying the mat directly to floor board. Is your option bc of drain height? What’s the difference or recommended option?

Schluter drain is the only schluter product I have used. I have seen a lot of pros on KZbin not care for this German creation.
