Great idea Simon and such great handiwork. Ideal for them wot keep forgetting their fork and try and impress us all by eating their supper with a badly shaped stick..hahaha..! I was working with a second driver one day that had some strange eating habits. He had a supply of yogurts and a few carrots....but forgot his spoon..! He carved a spoon out of a carrot, ate his yogurts with it...and then ate the carrot. Job done..😂😂😂 Cheers 👍

Thanks for sharing the design. I just made one and it turned out well with a small adjustment to the overall dimensions to accommodate my kitchen gear. I especially like the stick sleeve to hang it flat, and the keeper flap for the Opinel. Great ideas. Canoe trip coming up in 1 week; looking forward to having all my kitchen gear well organized for a change.

Cold weather is a great time for reviewing kit and for skilled people to make personalized and practical items of kit. Great premise. Pro chefs love knife/implement rolls. Fine, clear and detailed directions. "Shades" of Great Britain's seafaring/sail making heritage. (Iron Men and Wooden Ships!) For 'Yanks' like me, I am reminded that famed woodcraft writer 'Nesmuk' was a merchant seaman early in life...and he loved to make his own kit in the 'closed' season. Then, the final flourish in an exceptional design, the tubular spreader doubles as a fire blow bellows. My compliments!

I can't sew a lick, so I am always amazed by your resourcefulness at it. I put a pair of titanium chopsticks in the narrowest slot of my knife/tool roll (which I think would work well to stiffen the top, where you use the 2-piece rod (a brilliant idea, btw)) to form a spoke at the center to roll it around, then the slots get larger toward the outside (the inverse of your layout). Also, Andy has added a couple tiny stock pots to his camp cooking setup, according to his video today. I am not sure what miniature cooking gear you don't already have between the two of you, but I believe it is your turn.😆

Awesome job once again Simon! I will say, sewing all that by hand would be a bit much. You've got me looking at waxed canvas now! Like you, i love making unique things out of natural materials. Just a side note, i came across your video when you spoke about just having your heart surgery. Im so glad that it went well, and i surely would have wished you luck before hand. Im glad all went well, and that you have the type of health care that affords all the people access to critical care. I look forward to the next vid!

Thank you buddy! Yes, I was (am) really lucky! It’s all behind me now, health restored to normal - the miracle of modern science! Sewing machines can be picked up quite cheaply - I didn’t pay much for mine, second hand, and the old ones are the best in my opinion! Makes the sewing much easier! 😁👍

Really nice job. Crazy... about a week ago I was thinking that I need to make a few rolls for some of my kits and other things to keep them neat... and here you are making one lol and doing a marvelous job too. Thanks for posting. Great video and fun to watch you create a new piece of gear. Picked up a few tips too :) Waxed canvas is a little pricey compared to untreated. I’ll be treating mine myself. I pretty much treat all my canvas and wood that’s used in the Bush with linseed or a mix of linseed and beeswax. Keeps everything dry and will last darn near a lifetime.
@simonablokeinthewoods5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’m going to have a go at waxing canvas, Ive used bitumen (boat project many years ago) and Thompson’s water seal on canvas, but I’ve always bought pre-waxed canvas (as a premium!!) got to be better doing it myself. Cheers

Nicely done! I think I'll steal this idea for other sets of tools too. ;) On a related note, it seem you could make it roll from the other side to fix the small pocket issue too. That would put the small pocket on the inner most part of the roll, and the tools in the longer pocket would be less likely to fall out. Just my thoughts.

I live in Ohio. I could go shopping today and buy 10 great old machines for $30 or so. They are everywhere. I bet asking around, a person could get one for free from a friend or relative. Here in the US, sewing no longer seems to be a very popular activity. Try to get a machine that has no plastic parts (I mean gears etc., knobs are okay). The machines were so well made that it is near impossible to wear one out, except nylon plastic gears get brittle and break with age. I bet it is the same in many other places.
