Here's a simple drum you can make in a day. It actually produces a fairly good tone!

The kids' expression at the end proves, that even if you are the most cheerful and likable person, who's also kind of a youtube celebrity, your kid will ALWAYS think you're lame. :)

Hi Steve, I really enjoy your always-awesome videos. I've made a few of these and if you care, here are a few tips to getting a slit drum sounding better: very dense wood is best, which you already knew; the wood has to be thick, ie 3/4" or 1"; cut away half of the wood (on the underside) close to the beginning of each slit (it needs some flexibility so it can vibrate). Hope you make another one soon! I love the sound these make.

to tune them, do it from the bottom of the slits. for higher tones remove wood from the tip of the bar and to tune it lower tone, remove it from the base. can do this by drilling shallow hole with a forstner bit and using a guitar tunner

@tbenkey You should also do your research. Cherry is very deffenately NOT harder than rosewood. However, there are at LEAST ten woods that I use in instrument building that are. Rosewood is not chosen because of it's hardness, but rather it's specific density, which generates a bright, but warm tone. As far as cherry goes, lay a peice of it next to a peice of rosewood, and smack them both with a hammer. Take note of which one dents easier.

Rosewood is traditional for guitars. It can be really thin (moves a lot) and strong ( lasts a lot ) because growth radials of tend to be straight. That lets the sound propagate better. Thanks for being there Wyatt.

I found the slit drum video, yay! I just saw it on the thumb piano video. I can only wonder if involving math would make a difference as far as the length of the drum slits in relation to each other. Either way it looks and I'm sure sounds... very cool.

The lengths of the tongues matter. Also, you can't tune the drum after you've attached the top. You have to gradually carve the tongues from behind so that each produces the desired pitch. (Science 101 - the less mass, the faster it vibrates.)

Tomato or Tamato... Nah, If I sent someone to the store for a slit drum (log or Krin) and he came back with a Tongue drum.... I'd send him back. It's possible only I care, but I have been associated with hand (not 'Hang' drum) drums for years & years and have not heard one called the other. Maybe I don't get out enough. I like your video though.

Who cares? You do what you are comfortable with in your shop, and everyone else will do what they are comfortable with. Most Safety shit is subjective anyway. It's only with the power tools that you aren't in control of the speed at which it works that you really actually have to watch out. And he could have gotten into an accident driving to the dollar store, which isn't safe, or even struck by lightning once he headed out the door, which also isn't very safe.

Not really a real instrument, but if you do some ACTUAL research this may be helpful to you. BTW, ACTUAL research, (as opposed to just using the word research to replace "I think this is true" would show that rosewood is right around the fourth hardest wood in the world (I know cherry and Ironwood are harder, and perhaps teak) . Just saying.
