I LOVE THE THOUGHT THAT GRAMMA CHERISHED THE HOLIDAY SO MUCH THAT SHE WENT THE EXTRA MILE SERVING THE MEAL ON HER VERY BEST DISHES. MY FAMILY DOES THE SAME. THAT’S WHY WE CALL THEM “HOLIDAYS”, SET APART FROM ALL THE REST.

So I did all four of your side sides for thanksgiving and here are my thoughts. Grandmas stuff taste very good but it was a little on the dry side, the apples and celery didn’t bake too well so I would finely cooked them next time instead of bite side. Mash potatoes were awesome! Sweet potatoes casserole was a disaster. I would put less syrup next time my sweet potatoes were swimming in syrup no one ate it including myself. Lastly, green bean casserole was awesome.

One hint for the mashed potatoes..... instead of the cup of water in the instant pot, use a cup of chicken broth! Adding chicken broth, or boiling potatoes in broth water, adds flavor to them! I would use unsalted broth so that you can season them as usual.

Yumm on all. Our tradition is layering crushed crackers, canned jelled cranberry (sliced and spread around over crackers) and then coolwhip. Keep layering until almost to the top of bowl. I sprinkle a little bit of crushed crackers and try to make a little flower design with some of the cranberry. Put in fridge overnight to let it all kind of mix together.

Kristin, when you are making your potatoes, instead of water, use canned milk in the instapot to cook them. You should be able to mash, add everything else except milk. It works too. I also use this when making Mac and cheese in the instantpot. Make the macaroni with canned milk in the instantpot and when it is cooked, add salt, pepper and cheese and stir.

Good morning Six Sisters. That selection of Thanksgiving side dishes looks absolutely delicious. I believe I'll be serving some oyster stuffing with mine - a classic, delicious bread dressing with chopped oysters, a nice choice for any holiday dinner. It's loaded with the flavors you'd expect in a stuffing-lots of parsley, celery, breadcrumbs, and onion but with a little something extra special thanks to the addition of oysters. Oyster stuffing's a tasty treat to complement turkey, but of course can also be served with chicken, duck, or goose. And of course, I'll be using oysters from the Great Chesapeake Bay. That being said, y'all have a wonderful Sunday, full of family, fun and food.

We always pulled out all the stops. China, crystal, sterling flatware and serving pieces, linen tablecloth and matching napkins, fresh flowers and silver candlesticks…always in the dining room. We didn’t dress in our Sunday best, but definitely no tee shirts or sweatshirts, etc - sort of the equivalent of business casual. It was a big occasion. And we did it all again for Christmas with prime rib, New Year’s with ham and Easter also with ham because nobody liked lamb 😂. There was always the fun of “after dinner”, too, where the men and boys cleared the table and brought the dishes into the kitchen while the women and girls hand washed and dried everything and put it all away. There was lots of chatting and good-natured joking. Then it was time to reset the table with dessert plates, silver and coffe/tea cups for slices of pies and cake! My daughter carries on with the tradition now. I thought she might jettison it all as so many prefer to be casual, but she has always loved the extra feeling of importance the holidays seem to take on when dinner is so special. I’m just glad she’s passing that onto her children, too! Hopefully, her daughter will do it when she has a family so my daughter can have that joy for every holiday dinner of her life as I have. I can’t visit for every holiday, so I celebrate by myself. But I always give myself the gift of eating at the dining room table, completely decked out as always.

Hey ladies! Loving the make ahead recipes! I think there should be a thanksgiving video one year on thanksgiving dishes when you have one oven! There’s only so much you can do if the turkeys in there and the stove top is full. I’ve figured it out mostly but if cooking for 8, I came up short one place to cook green beans. Just an idea.
@tiffanyb4764
@tiffanyb4764 2 жыл бұрын
One thing I done to help with having only one oven is I bought an electric roaster for the turkey. Best thing I’ve done so far. It cooks the turkey faster and it’s nicely browned and delicious. One other thing I’ve done is I either cook stuff that takes a long time the day before and just heat it up in the crockpot. I have 3 crockpots. Or I cook them the day of in the instant pot and move them into the crockpot to keep warm if I need the instant pot. Stuff like fresh peas, collard greens, chicken and dumplins, rice. I only cook my chicken and dumplins on the stove top but I’ll put them in the crockpot to keep warm. And all of that will free up my burners.
@dizzinese
@dizzinese 2 жыл бұрын
@@tiffanyb4764 yes, last year I had it all planned to use 2 slow cookers, the instant pot, and an electric thing that’s big but not deep. I still needed my sons gf to do the bean casserole in her oven. Thank you Jesus, I was invited to her parents so we did a smaller meal instead. Whew!
@tiffanyb4764
@tiffanyb4764 2 жыл бұрын
@@dizzinese sounds like we do almost all the same things! When you only have one stove and one oven and cook enough for an army you get creative lol. My husband is convinced I can’t cook small anytime. But he’s never refused a meal either lol.
@dizzinese
@dizzinese 2 жыл бұрын
@@tiffanyb4764 LOL! I had a son and myself but always cooked for a family of 4 with enough for leftovers! But you never knew which kid or how many from the neighborhood would be eating with us and I froze the leftovers or we ate them the next day so no waste. I’m 56 and still cook a pound and a half of hamburger for any 1 pound recipes and I just eat leftovers for days. Or freeze them…still! The differed is , I rarely cook now. I eat a sandwich most nights, or a bagel with cream cheese and some lox salmon ontop. Easy and quick! I get busy and don’t hVe to stop to cook! Your day will come, but with the husband it’ll take longer that’s all. But one day you won’t cook for a whole week! Lol
@tiffanyb4764
@tiffanyb4764 2 жыл бұрын
@@dizzinese I cook for 4 people but enough for way more. We all like and eat leftovers and I do freeze stuff too. When I cook certain meals especially chili the first thing I hear when we sit down “ is there plenty for tomorrow night too”? I have to cook a double batch for 4 people because it’s a favorite and we must have leftovers. My time is coming faster than I’d like. My oldest daughter graduates this year and will leave us next fall for college. My other daughter is 10 so I have a little while with her. And I’ve been dealing with the husband over 20 years. I haven’t decided if I’ll keep him yet lol. I really don’t mind cooking for the most part I enjoy it. Of course I enjoy easy nights too.

To peel potatoes easily, you can also cut out a strip all the way around with a peeler and then boil for 15 minutes. After they are for tender, you can let them cool a bit and then just pull on the peeling and it will come right off. Works with all potatoes.

I make or prep most of them the day before. My dad always said to take the turkey out 30 min before you want to serve it, so it can rest and the juices stay in when you cut it. Those last 30 minutes are KEY! That's when all of my sides go in the oven to reheat or cook up. I try to do everything in 9x9 pans, so I can fit 4 different dishes in there.

I think they are talking about a canned sweet potato. It says yam on the can.

There are about 7000 varieties of sweet potatoes. We are most familiar with the orange ones, but they come in many colors including white, yellow, purple and red. Yams aren't usually found in the US. Those canned ones are mislabeled, they're really sweet potatoes.

Don't add fruit to stuffing. It's not supposed to be sweet.
