Great Video! When I make whoopie slings for my hammocks the fixed loop, locked brummel, end and the other end is adjustable with a 12 to 17 in bury with tag end exposed. You could use this to cinch down on the steps to prevent them from coming off due to slack when step off the aider. I think this would be an easier to build as well.

I know this an old video but damn I dont know why there's people bitching about the camera work. I watched this video and within 30 mins had a 2 step built and hanging in a tree. Worst part is dulling out scissors and fishing the bury through . Other then that it's pretty straight forward. Thanks man for uploading this.

This looks like the best way to make a multi step aider. I wish you would have had better video with close ups of how you do your splicing and knots. Much of the most important fastenings were out of the field of view and so far from the camera, we can't see how you were doing them. Have you, by any chance done a remake or considered doing one? If you could get a second person to operate the camera on a tripod or gimbal, it could all be covered. But it looks like an excellent end product

If you put the bottom step tubing on, would you have fed one of your end loops through the a tube with a large enough ID? Or would you have fed the tubing onto the rope and then somehow still tied a locked brummel on the other end?

Thanks Jerry! Very helpful!

You asked a better way to get the loop back through the lock. I make my loop just large enough to fit over itself with no protective sleeve. After it’s done slide the protective sleeve over the eye and down the Amsteel then girth hitch the aider to the step. Slide the protective sleeve through the eye to be inside the hitch. Make sense? Also, I bought muy aiders and I think they made three individual steps with only the first step having the eyes. The second two steps are brummel locked onto the step above. I haven’t tried building it yet.

Thanks for the video. Did you ever think of checking to see if what you were doing was in camera view?

First I heard a complaint out of 7400 views Paul! I knew I should have kept a copy of the crayon picture book version. Might have to use a little imagination. Besides, If I showed you every step, then you wouldnt be able to claim DIY right? You, sir, are welcome. LOL.

Jerry, I'm having trouble with the bury, what wire are you feeding through and how are you attaching the amsteel to pull it through? Thanks
@jerrygrose4683 жыл бұрын
Im using an electricians fish wire. I put a small hook on the end of the wire and push it through. On the end of the Amsteel bury, I cut back all but 3 or 4 strands and put those longer strands in the hook. Then I wrap electricians tape around the amsteel and wire to create a taper. Then, pull it back through.

Do you have any suggestions on how to tie the top two ends together if I wanted to make it a moveable aider?
@davidmedick55302 жыл бұрын
Try using a fid for the bury. Easier than fishing wire through the core.
@jerrygrose4682 жыл бұрын
I use a fid for 3/16 and up, but wirenworks well for the smaller diameters. It's also hard to find a 7ft fid for full burys!

Why can't the loop end bury be shorter? Say 6". Curious
@jerrygrose4684 жыл бұрын
Brother Rex! It can. Im trying to get as close to the manufacturers suggested bury length as possible, which I believe is 10 inches. But, a lot of guys run a shorter bury. I went with a 4 inch loop so that the loops can be girth hitched to a Hawk Helium stick for a more permanent aider.

@@jerrygrose468 I'm new to working with amsteel, but it looks simple enough I'd like to give it a try. Where do you find the manufacturers recommendations. I want to make sure if I try any other projects or if I modify your design at all I don't end up doing something that is unsafe.
@jarodlojeck51503 жыл бұрын
@@jerrygrose468 after a locked Brummel splice, you don't need the 10" bury. The Samson bury length suggestions are for straight splices where the constriction of the rope is what holds it. On a locked Brummel the bury doesn't hold the load.
@MechEngChiu3 жыл бұрын
What size fid did you using for this?
@adventure4him4 жыл бұрын
Do you think you could do the bury for the middle step downward? This would give you room to do your 10” bury. I don’t know if this would change anything being buried below the step, but just an idea...
@jerrygrose4684 жыл бұрын
I think that would put pressure on the locking side of the amsteel, taking the "locking" properties away. So far, I have'nt had any issues with this configuration and i've made 30 or so climbs to date.
@pop47252 жыл бұрын
Maybe put the top loops on last (?), easier to run the brummel loop

Where did you find 3/4 tubular webbing? I can not find any.TIA

The stuff in the video came with the rope. Since, I have found that 1/2 inch provides a better fit. www.amazon.com/Country-Brook-Design-Foliage-Military/dp/B01N5WWOCC/ref=sr_1_5?crid=3S8I8XGKVEBUR&dchild=1&keywords=1%2F2+tubular+webbing&qid=1617034647&sprefix=1%2F2+tubu%2Caps%2C229&sr=8-5

Do you just hang the aider on the step as opposed to tying it onto your steps?
@jerrygrose4684 жыл бұрын
Usually I gorth hitch them to the step, but have just hung them on the step and it works fine.

What was total length used to build this?
@jerrygrose4684 жыл бұрын
1 piece at 109" and one piece at 21". That includes 13 inches on each side for loops ( 6" for a 3 inch loop and 7 inches for bury (26")), 38" on each side for the step loop (76") and 7 inches for the bottom foot loop on piece 1. Piece 2 includes 7" step and 7 inches on each side for buries. Tubing is 7 inches as well.

The best way to do it is, step line through main line, then mainline through step line, then bury towards the top.
