Tip for anyone who wants to make one, let's say for example his acrylic was 1'' thick, and he etched straight on to that piece, its gonna work as shown in the video, but if you were to buy two .5'' pieces of acrylic and etch on to one of them then put the other piece over it, it will give a much better effect :)

Hi, do you say glue the second 0.5'' unengraved acrylic piece on top of the other engraved piece? I don't understand!

This is beautiful, and SO SIMPLE to do!! I can't believe it! If I saw this thing, lit up in a dark room, I would've thought the process of making it was FAR more complex! This gives me some ideas for a project that I had in mind. At least now I know I can build it more simply.

Good stuff man thank you for showing people that they can engrave on acrylic without a CNC laser or engraver. I love you for doing this, not everyone has access to that kind of stuff.

If you use a vinyl cutter, you can cut stencils out of vinyl, stick the vinyl on the acryllic, sand blast your design, remove the vinyl and BAMN.. theres your logo and it looks professional!

alternately, at michael's they used to sell 'sandblasting in a can.' i used it once, and i suppose it works well enough to rough up an acrylic surface. use some spray adhesive on the back of your stencil (probably a thin card stock would be better, not sure if the sand-in-a-can stuff would go through regular paper easily), go outside and in a few minutes you should have a brilliant result without all the effort, not to mention a much cleaner product.

Thanks for the inspiration. I just made on with what i had laying around real quickly to check the principal. I used a old acrylic baseball card holder about (5mm) a 6" string of red leds, a 9V Battery with a toggle and just slotted out a USPS small mail poriority box. It worked perfectly, well for a quick demonstration. I would suggest using 220 grit sandpaper as it will come out so much faster and more refined (its just the right thickness for speed and quality smoothness) and maybe just use the rotory around the edges to accentuate the borders to be more exact. Thats just a suggestion and nothing else...yours came out GREAT!! I just think It would just save you a bit of time.. Thanks for the video!

I am wondering if acetone would etch the Plexiglas. I thin it will. What you can do is a negative etch by using the template and dripping wax on it then remove the template and brush the rest with your acetone and when you rinse it off, it will etch a negative of your template then just remove the wax and you are done. Only problem I see is getting the wax off easily but it will look better then using a power etcher. I think this will work. any comments are welcome. I could be an idiot here but I think it should work without blowing up anything or starting any fires that is. LOL.

I'd just go to the next fab lab and use a laser (provided they have a USP laser), a milling machine (fine contours are gonna be a problem probably) or sandblast it into the acrylic.
@John-iv2oz
@John-iv2oz 9 жыл бұрын
Vu wow, I have a milling machine right here in my back pocket right next to my sandblaster and my laser etcher, NOT. I bet if you asked people in your neighborhood how many of them have any of those machines you would find out that NONE of them do.

John Miranda Google "fab lab" before making fun of people. I have one close to home.
@John-iv2oz
@John-iv2oz 9 жыл бұрын
The point of the video is to make it at home with few if any unusual tools or specialty equipment. Once you start mentioning equipment that most people do not have at home then you pretty obviously missed the point of the video. The suggestion I made was to use acetone and candle wax that can be found in most peoples bathrooms or hall closets. You suggested a milling machine or a laser. So yes, I made fun of your suggestion. It was dumb. Not saying you are dumb but your suggestions was dumb.
@huyvu2615
@huyvu2615 9 жыл бұрын
Nope, the "at home" part is purely your implication. Going to the next fab lab to get a milling job (if one is close of course) is no different from going to the next DIY store to get the acrylic, or are you missing the point of the video if you don't order it off ebay so you don't have to step outside? Fab labs are there for things like this. Empowering individuals to create stuff with professional equipment with results that look professional. I'm lucky enough, I have one 10 minutes from home and another one at college which is 20 mins from home. I'm just saying that this possibility exists and it's as valid as your suggestion with the wax+acetone.
