Make an Ornate Setting for a Long Cabochon: A Silversmithing Tutorial

This tutorial shows how to make an intricate prong setting for an elongated oval Turquoise cabochon. This is an advanced level project. For materials, I used 16 (1.3 mm) and 18 (1.02 mm) gauge sterling round wire, and 16 gauge (1.3 mm) sterling square wire. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux, although I used a little of Easy paste solder for the final bit.

I've honestly never tried Argentium. I'm always tempted to buy a little to try it, but it's on the bottom of my shopping list:). I know some folks love it. One of my close friends tried it, and struggled with soldering when using it. What is your experience with it Robboback?

​@@chadssilversmithing Chad I'm the guy who uses argentium. I have no trouble soldering it. But, I haven't soldered sterling!! I've been tempted to get sterling but worry about fire scale!!! I've had a long life of soldering and welding/brazing. It's no problem to make sure the metal is clean with the right flux. (I've soldered and brazed without flux!!!) But everything was super clean. Try argentium some time just for the heck of it. I'm buying sterling! How do you like the hike in silver prices? Are they going to take silver away from us like they did with gold!!!?
