For security reasons, Android now defaults to "Charge only" mode when you connect your phone to a computer with a USB cable. But if you use your phone like a flash drive, it gets old having to tap the notification, then pick file transfer mode in the menu.
Thankfully, if you enable the hidden Developer Options menu in Android's Settings, you can choose the default mode for your phone's USB connection and make it show up in Explorer or Finder right away.

Genius! Smart Phone carriers told me they cant help me because they dont support my laptop/computer etc. The main how to video "assumes" when you connect smart phone and pc via usb that the files will AUTOMATICALLY open. Thank Goodness this video shows "what if it does not show"....and yes he was so right to enable developer feature to enable usb configuration. So genius and so thinking of covering all options as most how to videos ASSUME something should work for everyone. Thanks!

That's also useful if you want to plug a USB drive into your phone to save your data. Be careful though because it can drain the battery pretty fast (you can use a self-powered USB hub to reduce the drain).

Despite Samsung having reset its usb settings back to "transfer", apparently on some phones (perhaps the cheaper galaxy models, like mine, the A32 Galaxy 5g) they either never reverted or maybe changed it back again ? Regardless, whenever I tried to connect my USB stick via an adapter, it would be set to charging mode and not only that, it WOULD NOT let me switch options, despite tapping the notification. In fact, a lot of the time when I tried tapping the notification, it would send me ANOTHER notification saying I had unplugged the USB device in the wrong way and needed to restart my phone !! Irritating to say the least. Dunno if it's a bug or what, but it was driving me crazy. Within 30 seconds of watching your video, the default option was set to transfer. I'm crossing my fingers......

ok, so i tried 2 lower quality looking cables and the one with the cut exposing some of the metal wire works, the other 2 just charge :C i don't feel a piticularly igh amount of heat anywere when i plug it in so i don't think it's gota short so i'm gona use it to transfer data then order a new good usb ca cable for later.

This video has clear instructions and I was able to easily follow them, however I'm still not getting access to my phone. The issue is that one time, I accidentally selected "charge only" when I got the pop-up and I've never been able to access the phone again.

Preventing users from accessing USB mode to transfer files is NOT an 'attack surface for potential hacks' but strictly done to prevent people from accessing their phones and potentially bugging them up. I has NOTHING to do with 'security' and everything to do with manufacturers protecting themselves from users attempting to get warranty service for issues they caused on their own. Another thing, the instructions you describe are NOT AVAILABLE for many versions of Android. It would be useful to mention that in the tittle, e. g., "for Android 10 only".

I set up my new S23, old S10, and Tab S4 all to this option, but when any 2 of those 3 devices is USB connected to each other (and unlocked) it doesn't allow any file browsing or transfering from one device to another like I can with connected external storage. Any way to transfer files from one device to another via USB cable outside of the SmartSwitch device set up app? Actually, even with the SmartSwitch app, I was only able to transfer files wirelessly, the wired function wouldn't work.

What do you do if the notification doesn't pop up anymore? I'm currently unable to have the device show up on my PC even though I changed the default usb settings to file transfer. None of the options show up either. I changed a setting that reverse which device controls the storage device, for example the phone would show the PC storage, but I don't want that and I can't get to where I changed it. The notification to change the usb settings doesn't even pop up anymore, even reset notifications settings.

This is good. However the default to file transfer should be possible only on trusted devices like your own laptop and such. It shouldn't be possible on any device. That's a massive security threat. I wish Android gave us an option to just do that. That way you have the security you need plus the convenience of being able to just plug in to your laptop and access files immediately. Oh well a man can wish can't he?
