Love those basslines, Julian. Thought the first one sounded pretty cool, but the addition of the other chord tones really amplified the groove!

Some useful tips, Julian, for making the 'usual' synthwave basslines more interesting! Am also getting a lot out of part 1 + 2 of your synthwave course.

That's great news, Mike. I'll be the first to admit that I spend a lot of time on bass lines. Glad the courses are useful.

Thanks so much for this great tutorial! I love 80's music and Synthwave, but as you say on your website, finding information on it is not easy. Your tutorials are exactly what I was looking for. I really like your teaching style, how you get into it right away, teach ideas & concepts rather than how to use software. I'm using Presonus Studio One 6, and was able to follow right along. Forces me to learn the software a bit more which is great. Really appreciate the quality of both production & content. Bought your Master Class 1&2, looking forward to delving into those as well your other KZbin stuff! Thanks again Julian!

0:00 what is the name of the background synthwave music?

I feel I should point out for the non-theory initiated, the reason why the Ab works against the C-7 is because it transforms the C-7 into a Abma9. Any -7 chord can be altered this way by substituting the bass a major 3rd below the root. So for example D-7, if I move the bass down a major 3rd from D to Bb, then the chord becomes Bbma9. E-7 becomes Cma9, etc. Also Julian, thanks so much for all your content, it’s great! If I may request something, could you please consider doing a tutorial on getting a really top Fm slap bass sound? Mitch Murder is a master at this. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing this info. I try to keep the tuts simple without getting too heady :-) with theory but your explanation is super appreciated. I'll look into the slap bass.

@@SynthwavePro ah yes makes total sense to keep it simple. And of course I know that you know this stuff, I was just thinking some people might be a bit confused as to why it works and also how to use it any key so I just thought I would jot it down. Incidentally, I’m also quite a fan of playing the 5th below a -7 chord which of course transforms it into a dominant9sus4. Great sound. Thanks for considering the slap bass thing! An example of the sort of sound (and incredible clarity in the low end mix) I was thinking about is something like this track of Mitch Murder’s… kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYncipxoZdxmkLs Cheers!

Hey Julian, for the bass runs that play when those note triggers hit--- Did you program all that note by note, or is that some sort of arpeggio/octave preset/patch that you have applied to the bass line? Thanks!

Most likely the stock Arpeggiator from Ableton. I might cover this shortly. Thanks for watching. i guess I should have dived into this a little more.
