Just a note that might help others - when I made my documents, I hadn't noticed the resolution and when it came to getting my droid font correct, I was down to 2pt and it still didn't line up. Rewatched the video and noticed Helen used 72. Redid the documents using the correct resolution and I was able to get the numbers at a readable size. Using photoshop on a Mac and my font size was 15.25pt. Thanks for the great video Helen!

Just my opinion here. Numbering the lines might turn out not to be of any use if your trying to create a template from something that is not solid as the heart, or does not consists of a straight line, but has curves or extra lines. Such an example is text. Letter "U" for example uses only simple lines, while letter "E" needs triple lines for the biggest part. Otherwise this video is awesome, I managed to create a lot of templates for my daughter to make book folding pieces of art. Instant subscription. Thanks a lot!!

Hi, Helen. I've been playing around with book folding for a couple of months. I have Inkscape instead of Photoshop, but I think the approach you've taken here can be done in Inkscape as well. I think I'm missing something obvious, though: what is the purpose of numbering the lines? I've done some simple patterns and just ticked the lines when I've marked that fold.

Good question Barbara. You don't have to number them, some people prefer to have them numbered but if you are ok with no numbers then leave out this step. Best of luck working with these in Inkscape.

+Lucy Dragoon I am using Photoshop CC2015. It has smart guides. If you are working in earlier versions of Photoshop and if you need a guide in the middle - then add a guide in the middle of the document manually and use that to line everything up to that.

Hi Helen, I love this tutorial but I am having problems with the font. When I start numbering by the time I get to number 5 the numbers are going off the black line to the right and when I continue to the second set of 1-0 they aren't lined up at all. Can you give me some things to try to correct this. Thanks!

+Mark Menard What font are you using Mark? It has to be a monospaced font or it just won't work. If you are using a monospaced font then select all the numbers and start reducing the font size till they shrink enough to move into place exactly. Let me know how you go with this?

Hi, A VERY late answer, but who, knows, you may have never found out how it's done. You simply fold a page for every section. For instance when you have the letter E and you have folded the first vertical line, then you fold the next page for the upper line (e.g. page 3), you fold page 4 for the middle line and page 5 for the bottom one, thus completing the first section of the three orizontal lines. You continue the next 3-part section with page 6 for the next part of the upper line, page 7 for the next part of the middle one and so on until you have created the full length of each line.

Hi Helen, I've been searching high and low for a tutorial that makes sense to me and I seem to be getting a little bit from each one. I had a quick question about yours before I try to dig in too much. If I was to do a word would your method work? In another tutorial I saw the creator of that one said there would have to be a different layer for each letter. Would that be the case for yours or no and just follow your steps? Thank you

What version of photoshop is this because the creative icloud version is significantly different.

Monica this was probably done using Photoshop CC - it doesn't use any tools that aren't in earlier versions and should work just fine in any CC version. If you have a specific issue where you don't understand what to do, feel free to ask. But from here I can't see any reason it should not work as CC isn't really significantly different at all - at least beyond the start screen which is different.

Hi Kayley. You will need to check out a book folding video for that. I don't actually do book folding so I can't help you here, but I do teach Photoshop and this video was made to help someone who already folds and wants to be able to create their own templates. Do a quick KZbin search and I am sure you will find plenty of videos to help you fold using a template like this. Cheers! Helen

How can i use shapes other than the ones in photoshop. Like how do I import clip art and use those shapes NOT just the ones included in the photoshop program. I am having difficulty getting the lines to convert since when I open (lets say a butterfly outline)with photoshop it becomes the background page and then the clipping doesn't work right. Help! DO I cut and paste from a saved image or what?

+Starr Cortes You will need to turn the Background layer into a regular layer by dragging it's little lock icon in the Layers palette onto the Trash. Then remove the background from around the butterfly by selecting it and deleting it. Then, when you have the butterfly shape on a layer by itself you are good to go! It will behave the same way as the Photoshop shape.

Hello! I'm still having trouble getting that font to fit exactly on the lines. I've set the pattern at 50%, started over several times. I can get up to the number nine, but once I go to start over, the white numbers are no longer visible on the black lines, they've gone in between. Thank you!

+Lin Hallemann Lin, if you want to print it on a single page, when you go to print in Photoshop, select Shrink to fit and it will print on one page. If that's not what you want, tell me what you are looking for and I'll explain how to achieve it.

Hi, I find this tutorial helpful, yet I am having trouble with the mask layer part. When I click create new mask layer, the lines do not fill the heart, instead they fill the whole page. What should I do? I have retried it multiple times.

+EpicOne Life There is no difference in this case between Mac and PC. Can you please tell me the point in the video that it is not working for you? I just rechecked everything and it works fine on the Mac (I also use a Mac and a PC). I wonder if you are not making your clipping mask - there is a step where you go from a page of lines to lines in the heart shape and you do this by clicking on the layer mask to select the layer and then create the clipping mask (easy way to do this is to choose Layer > Create Clipping Mask). If this doesn't solve your issue, please tell me the point in the video where it no longer works for you - eg: 7:52 is the point at 7 minutes, 52 seconds - you can read this off the KZbin play window. That will help me work out what is going wrong.

+Lucy Dragoon If you Control/Command click on the shape thumbnail in the Layer palette you will select it. You can then use the Move tool to resize it.

Set black as the foreground color and use the Paint Bucket tool to fill it. Alt + Backspace (not Alt + Delete) should work but the Paint Bucket is a good alternative to use.

Interesting question Pam. Google Docs and Photoshop are two totally different pieces of software with two totally methodologies and typically two different outcomes (one is pictures, one is text). You might be able to do it but I don't think I would know where to start. Sorry I am unable to help more.

What a wonderfully done tutorial, thank you so much! I'm excited to give this a try. :) I did find that the font, at 17pts, did not fit over the line patterns as it did in your video with Photoshop CC. However, I was able to set the character tracking (the space between the letters - kerning?) to -12 and it fit like a glove! Great job - Once you get a mono- spaced font you can change the tracking to suit. I am glad you found a value that worked for you! And by the way, kerning is the spacing between two characters, and tracking refers to the spacing between more than two characters! Weird hey? so it is tracking you are changing :)

If you make a cutout around the edges of the areas you want in your pattern you could do this. It might be easier to actually print the photo and trace around the edges you want to use in your pattern. It will require some artistic interpretation but it can be done. I hope this helps? +kim abel HI Kim, the Custom shapes tool shares a toolbar position with the Rectangle tool so you perhaps need to look out for it and the Custom Shape tool will be hidden under it on the flyout menu. I am assuming, of course, that you are using Photoshop and not Photoshop Elements which is a totally different program?

+kim abel Awesome. That's the right program. It is exactly what I used. I am assuming you have your toolbar visible and if the icons are in one long line, count from the top down - the icon you are looking for is the 18th one. You should see a small triangle in its bottom right corner, click on that to open its flyout menu and you will find the Custom Shape Tool there. Let me know how you go.
