Thanks a lot for this video. You explain so clear and I’m thinking that I will start this kind of craft really soon. I’m wondering about the rule. What about if for some reason my rule width is different from the one you used? And, does the ruler always go against the spine? Or are there some designs on which I would have to make a mark also in both borders, up and down? Tks again.
@HaveFunBookFolding4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Fanny. Thanks so much for watching, and thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you found the video helpful. :) Two great questions! In answer to the first, it doesn't matter if your ruler width is different than the one I used. Whether your ruler is wider or narrower, the finished design will look the same on the edges of the pages. As to your second question, the ruler always rests against the spine when folding. You never need to make any marks near the spine, top or bottom. The ruler will automatically and consistently set the correct folding angle as you fold each page, creating a sculptured, dimensional look when complete.

Elizabeth, the first “class” I took had us folding at a 90 degree angle instead of placing the ruler against the spine and folding at a smaller angle. Does it make a difference as long as all pages are folded in the same manner?
@HaveFunBookFolding2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Ruth. Good question. No, it doesn't make a difference which folding method you use. The finished design will look the same on the edges of the pages. There's really no right or wrong way to book fold. It's a matter of personal preference. I prefer the ruler-against-spine method for several reasons. It's faster, it's more accurate, and it makes it much easier to fold on marks that are either high or low on a page. The ruler-against-spine method also yields a more dimensional completed fold. Thanks for watching. :)

Great tutorial! I picked up a few tips. Question - How do you keep track of which fold number you’re on if you don’t go through and number the pages first? Just curious. Question - Do you ever find that you have marked and folded a page incorrectly? Sometimes I do, so I don’t crease the pages hard until further on when I know I’ve gotten it all right. The less it is creased, the less it is obvious if I have to change where the page is folded. How do you prevent mistakes like that? Thank you 😊
@HaveFunBookFolding4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Emily. Thanks very much for watching. I'm glad you found it helpful. :) Question 1 -- I put check marks next to the measurements of each Fold number, after I measure and mark them. If I see the check marks on the pattern, then I know I've completed that Fold. Question 2 -- Yes, I do occasionally mark and fold a page incorrectly. If it's not fixable, I'll just cut that page out of the book. That's a good tip you gave, not creasing the pages completely, until you know they're all correct. What helps me prevent mistakes the most? Double or even triple-checking the measurements for the Fold number I'm on. Plus, I always look at each numbered page as i turn it, in order to make sure I'm picking up and turning only one sheet. For example, if I'm marking page 77 of a book, I make sure the next page I start marking is page 79. I work pretty slowly. Hope this helps. Thanks again for watching and commenting. :)

Hi! This quite fascinating. I have a newbie question. What is the actual purpose of this activity and what do you do with your book once the pattern is complete? Thank you, your tutorial is very calming.
@HaveFunBookFolding4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Sandy. Great questions! For me the purpose of book folding is this: experiencing the joy that comes from creating beauty with my own two hands. It's a lot of fun watching ordinary book pages transform by simply folding them with my fingers. I also have great joy in folding when I'm folding the book as a gift for someone. Most book folders give away their work to loved ones. In my experience, the recipients are thrilled to receive book art. They're amazed and fascinated with it. Usually, they've never seen anything like it. You can also sell your book art. Some folders do that. Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm glad you found the video calming. :)

I found a pattern, but I'm confused about the markings. Instead of markings like 7.2 or 15.6, the markings are for example 5,85 or 17,65. And it is with a comma instead of dot. No instructions and I can't remember where I got it from, though I think it's European. Can you help? p.s. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your videos. You make it all very clear.
@HaveFunBookFolding2 жыл бұрын
Hi, vj mac. Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching my videos. I really appreciate it. 🙂 In regards to the measurements with commas, treat the commas as dots. So 5,85 becomes 5.85. And 17,65 becomes 17.65. Also, ignore the last number in each measurement. 5.85 becomes 5.8, and 17.65 becomes 17.6. If you try to make marks to a hundredth of a centimeter, such as 17.65 instead of 17.6, you’ll quickly go blind and want to tear out your hair. Ignore those hundredths throughout the pattern. Your completed design will still look great and hardly any different than if you measured to a hundredth of a centimeter for each mark. I agree with you that the pattern is probably European. Hope this helps.

Do we not worry about the pages in front or back of our book that aren't numbered?? And what if our pattern doesn't say how many pages our book needs to be?
@HaveFunBookFolding3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Bella. If your book has less than 30 numbered pages at the front or back, you can ignore them. They won't make a noticeable difference in the completed project. If your pattern does not specify how many pages it requires to complete that pattern, you cannot use it. Every professionally designed pattern will always provide that information. In your page counting for start page do you not count all the preview pages that are not numbered to add those to your total page count?
@HaveFunBookFolding5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Stacy. Thanks for watching and for the question. The answer is, it's optional. If your book has a Preface or an Introduction, it's up to you whether or not to include it in the total page count. Some folders do, some don't. If the Preface/Intro has several pages, I may ignore it. But if the Preface/Intro has more than that, like 20 or more numbered pages, I usually include it in the total page count.

I have been trying to fold it like you did using the thin ruler on the spine and folding against it, the problem for me is that the two points intersect. I can't get them to be separate the way you did. UGH, what am I doing wrong?
@HaveFunBookFolding2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Pamela. It sounds like you may be using the same side of the ruler for folding that you are placing against the spine. After you place the ruler against the spine, place the OPPOSITE side of the ruler on the mark, then fold the paper over the ruler. Notice how I use the opposite side of the ruler when I'm folding. Watch this at the 24:35 time stamp. Also, when you're folding, always place the ruler against the top of the spine for folding the top (first) mark, and place the ruler against the bottom of the spine for folding the bottom (second) mark. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching. :)

@HaveFunBookFolding3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Sandi. There's really no right or wrong way to book fold. It's a matter of personal preference. You can use either the 90-degree method or the diagonal method on any book. Use whichever method works best for you. I prefer the diagonal method. It's easier and faster, and it produces precise folds, especially for high and low measurements on the page. Hi, Daniela. It's great that you want to try book folding. Awesome! The Butterfly is a good pattern for beginners because it has no straight lines. Hi, Eric. In that situation, I use scissors to cut out the skipped, unmarked page. Start at the bottom edge of the page, about a half-inch away from the spine. Cut straight upwards to the top edge of the page. It’s okay if the cut edge is jagged. The cut edge will “disappear” into the completed folds on either side of it. You won’t be able to see it when you set the completed book upright. Thanks for watching and thank you for your order. 👍

Hi, Manish. You can close the book some. If you close it as tightly as possible, the book will be open about 3-4 inches wide. Thanks for watching. :)

is it missing a page?also do you think ill be able to finish it in 2 days -im on fold 110 right now?
@HaveFunBookFolding3 жыл бұрын
Hi, danna joby. I checked the pattern file. All pages are present. It sounds like you didn't print pages 4 and 5. Try reprinting the pattern. It will take anywhere from 3-6 hours to fold the Butterfly. Let me know if you have any other questions. :)

Hi, what is the formula if you have 10 pages before page 1, 17 pages before the starting page which is page 15 and 9 extra pages at the end? Thank you.
@HaveFunBookFolding5 ай бұрын
Hi, Eddie. Open the PDF of the Book Folding Guide that was included with your order. Scroll down to the bottom half of page 12. There you’ll find info about how to calculate the Start Page for a book with a Preface or Introduction. You can use the same method if your book has an Afterword, too.

Your folds are not 90degrees, which is what I've been taught, so do we have a choice?
@HaveFunBookFolding3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Elizabeth. Yes, the choice is yours. There's really no right or wrong way to fold. Whether you fold at 90 degrees, or angled diagonally as in this video, the finished design will look the same on the edges of the pages. Use whichever method works best for you. Thanks for watching. :)

Can you please show us the measurements ?

Timestamps are in the Description, measurements start at 14:25. She doesn't show you every measurement, that would take too long. She just shows you the method and gets you started.

Hi, Queenlioness76. Do you mean the part where I calculate the Start Page? As demonstrated in the video, 535 - 450 = 85. To hear me explain where I get those numbers, start watching at 11:17. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching. :)

Oh darn. The tutorials with the large graphic design with line wayyyyy easier and can be use like a template. Like why bother with mm
@HaveFunBookFolding Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, a measure-and-mark pattern yields a finer, more detailed image than a lined template pattern can. That’s why I design patterns that use the traditional measure, mark, and fold method. Thank you for watching. 🙂
