Breakout Rooms for Google Meets allows for concurrent sessions of Google Meet for Small Groups. The extension is a purple box with a lowercase white "b" in it. It is a memory hog, but all of Chrome is a memory hog. I have successfully run a main classroom Meet + 4 Breakouts on a 3.6 Ghz PC with 8 MB of RAM, running Win 10...but I had no other apps running at the time. Visual Effects for Google Meet allows for virtual and blurred backgrounds, along with other camera filters that the kids enjoy playing with before synchronous sessions begin. I use the virtual screen to display discussion topics. The kids use blurred backgrounds to hide messes. :)

The "Push To Talk" extension has a setting for "Mute On Join" that you can enable so your mic is muted automatically by default upon joining a meeting. Click the monkey icon in the toolbar to access it. Also if you TAP the spacebar it will TOGGLE the mic muting, you do a quick tap to unmute then tap to mute again. The press & hold works for momentarily unmuting the mic like a PTT switch.

Mr. Sowash, wonderful presentation. There is a chrome extension called 'mute all on meet' Also, you can stop students from entering the meet before you by going to your setting and making your meet link invisible. When you are ready for class maybe five minutes before you can make it visible again.

I teach in grade 4 or around ages 9 and 10 in the Philippines. That “mute all” option is what I really need. It’s difficult to present when somebody or several pupils have a noisy background and that they are not aware of muting their mics. Zoom has it but I wish google meet has it too.

These were great ideas! We use the G Suite at the university where I work as an English teacher. I teach English as a foreign language in Brazil and to help students to speak on Google meet is a real challenge. There's one feature of Zoom that would be very helpful for me in my classes: break rooms! This allows having students work in pairs or small groups and gain more confidence as speakers of a foreign language.

We haven't been able to get Snap Camera to work. Your computer has to be pretty new or have a really good graphics card. There is a good tutorial on Medium on making your own snap background. I have it bookmarked. I'll find it and post the link. Oh, it's fine if it's you. But if you have a guest, it's hard to get them to install and use something else because you have to explain all the steps for snap camera to them.

I have always searched for a tool where I can take notes while watching the video. Sometimes there are certain quotes or relevant notes which you want to take down but it will require you to open another app. Or you can push a button that will set the exact time that you desire to "replay" that part later. Since we do learn much from videos, I find it a necessity to have NOTE-TAKING features to supplement the learning process. The features are already great but there could still be more room for improvement. God bless.

Great video . Thanks . Here is new feature suggestion for google meet ... >thumbs up and thumbs down , should be gesture controlled mute and unmute as new feature needed. Teacher wants to mute all , will be 10 ft or 5ft away from live screen or camera. If she is explaining something important , she should be able to mute all , by showing some specific gesture such as finger on her mouth . Or an x using two index fingers. Gesture control should be good for muting everyone in the class.

Great info. Thanks. will be impressed more if Meet attendance is able to capture not just name but also give email id /Phone number with which the student has joined in.This will help in identifying few disturb elements.

Very nice video, John, it would be great if you could look directly at the camera, and probably if you could change the setup where you are hidden behind many computers, it would be a 5 star video for sure!

HiJohn, Thank you for presenting new extensions. As I am working alone remotely from home, I have no one to ask for how to use the tool. I do not think I use all new extensions but good to know.

12:15 you actually dont need 2 monitors. i split the browser into two different tabs. i teach my students on one tab with the presentation and the other tab shows the students. it works!!!

Thanks so much for the informative video! I will definitely be checking out these extensions! Although Google Meet doesn’t have breakout rooms like Zoom does, I have managed to still do group work during my virtual lessons. Before the class, I set up separate Meets (typically 4) in the Google Calendar linked to my Google Classroom (labeled Group 1 Google Meet, Group 2 Google Meet, etc). When the students join the class Google Meet, I assign them to a group and they join that group Meet through Google Calendar. I also link a Jamboard in each Meet for them to use if they want. Then after they finish their group work, they join back in our class Google Meet to debrief. I make the Google Meet events in Google Calendar repeat every day so they are always there in case I decide to put them in groups on a whim. It takes awhile to get used to but after a couple days, the students know exactly what to do (I teach high school) and love the chance to work in small groups and connect with their classmates!

Thanks for the tip Heidi! I have seen that suggestion but was concerned that the setup might be a little bit complex for some teachers and younger students. It's good to hear that it's working for you. I may have to take another look at that idea.

May I ask how you make these videos? I am a school-based tech specialist at a middle school,. I have been making a lot of videos lately, and the ability to zoom to focus in on particular places/icons on your screen is part of what makes your videos so helpful. Thank you!
