I used aluminium foil and used sticky tape to add the terminals. It also worked very well. Thank you for sharing a new way to make high voltage capacitor. I always watch you channel and you give many invaluable ideas for classroom demonstrations.

Very nice work! I like your idea of using copper foil so that the wire connectors can be soldered on! I didn’t think about that until I saw this video. I made similar capacitors, except larger and with many layers connected in parallel, as the basis for a flash lamp pumped dye laser. Instead of wire connectors, I had to use strips of aluminum foil in order to keep the circuitry inductance as low as possible (the low inductance being an important factor in successful dye laser design). Other than that, my capacitors were very similar to what you have here.

Dear Mr Ludic: excellent video! However, is there a possibilty that you can discuss/ (do a video) about capacitors that use a thin film of graphene, so that a high-Farad rating supercapacitor could be made?

Buy 2 rolls of 20meter alu foil and 2 plastic film wraps and wind all around a plastic pipe in one,obviously much bigger surface area abd the olastic film is very thing also giving higher capacitance

Either during charging or discharging, 2:18 actually you want the current direction on both plates to cancel the other rather then add. When they add, they add an equivalent series inductance, ESL to a capacitor, and that is very very bad for high frequency and pulsed power. Google "capacitor ESL" or "capacitor ESL chart".

i really like these build a component from scratch videos. i think you should make a playlist of just these sort of videos. along with videoes on how to make and calibrate measurement devices. the collection would be a great thing for post-apocalyptic knowledge repositories.

Just for reliability, I think that carrying the solder joint for the wire back under the tape would add a little strain relief. Is there any need for the landing zone for the wire solder joint to be across the whole width of the copper tape? I wonder what would be the pro and cons of having the landing zone to just be size of what is minimally necessary to solder on the wire...

There are a lot of calculations required to build DIY capacitors to particular specifications. You might add a link to a good website and on-line calculator.

Is the clear tape a type specifically for caps, or is it just common plastic, like what is used to make a transparency, or a cover for a report document?

I've been going the complete opposite direction. I ordered 50 meters of Ultra-ATA IDE cable (80 strands, the thick rigid ones), and just spend an evening cutting a centimeter of every other strand off and joining the remaining 40 conductors, repeat on the other side, but with the other 40 strands. Every centimeter of this is about 1nF, times 38 (the outer edge strands are only next to one other strand, the rest has alternating pole on both sides) It's highly effective, and the insulation doesn't break down nearly as fast as wrapped transparency sheets. Even better, if you need to finetune your capacitance, just twist the whole cable up a bit (ham's used to do this to tune FM transmitter bugs)

@@manla8397 I've got no projects to show for it, but the guy that taught me the trick runs a small electronics parts store. Really oldschool dude. Had wall to wall component trays for everything. Loved coming there and just talking shop. He always had some crazy project and I loved it! Pissed off the whole neighbourhood with his backyard tesla coils. Drove a sinclair C5 to work. What a guy. It actually started very very back in the days where I was making knock-off TI-83 PC link cables for all the classmates to load up games. I needed a tiny picofarad unpolarised cap somewhere in the circuit, and he told me "the local school just bought up all my caps", and handed me that bit of wisdom along with some IDE cables. Proceeded to show me they work as HF HV caps too. And if the insulation does break down, just put the whole capbank in a pvc tube, pour in mineral oil, and pull all the air bubbles out with a vaccuum. It stuck with me eversince.

@@devjock too bad the max voltage raiting on cat5 cable isn't the greatest. A 1 foot tall box packed with RG 6 coax cable segments wired in parallel and immersed in oil could get a deadly charge. I think their 3kv raiting is due to their ends, with little more than a millimeter gap between the shield and center. I suspect immersing in oil would allow coaxial capacitors to go up to 10,000v or more. They should be wired in a way to minimize ESL.

Man I wish someone In the know could come up with a fairly viable diy ceramic door nob cap. With the covid bs im looking at spending 500 bucks apiece for caps on a multiplier. Seems it would be cheaper to use a voltage divider on a tesla coil with those prices, but the cost of hv resistors right now is even stupider than hv caps!

Good video. Interesting and educational. I note however that use at high voltage will cause corona discharge in the air trapped between the layers, leading eventually to breakthrough of the dielectric sheet and failure of the capacitor. So no long-term reliability. But I'm impressed nevertheless.

While watching the video, I was thinking that wrapping the roll as tightly as possible would increase the capacitance, as it would reduce the air gap. So, you make a good point about the gap induced corona discharge.

cool any magnetism at the center of the coil? any way to measure to get the proper output amount ? Is that safe to put a 9v on it? up to what amount would it be considered bad since the video is not specific.

Spot welding wires onto aluminum tape works. What about an electrolyte?

Does it work for high frequncy too ? (100 Mhz or higher)

Have not tested them but i think they will not work because the inductance is high.

3:01 Where can you get a capacitance reader like that? I'm new to this and wanted to experiment with different forms of capacitors but my multi-meter cant read capacitance! Thanks, God bless!
