Actually an electrolytic capacitor has its aluminum "plates" separated with absorbent separating paper that's soaked in the electrolyte. The dielectric is an oxide layer that's built up on the anode aluminum "plate" strip. They anodize the anode aluminum strip which increases its surface area by creating microscopic pitting of the surface, then place it in an electrolyte that supplies plenty of oxygen and place a positive DC charge on it. They grow the dielectric oxide until its thickness is sufficient up to a maximum voltage rating that they choose, but usually not more than 600 volts, because electrolytes tend to break down at higher voltages, the dielectric oxide can only handle up to so many DC volts, thicker dielectric layers decrease capacitance significantly, and the point of this type of capacitor is high capacitance. Then it is sandwiched between two absorbent separator strips, the negative foil is placed on top of the other strips, leads are connected to the foils, the assembly of strips is rolled up, it is inserted into an aluminum can with breakage grooves that form a vent if the capacitor fails so it doesn't explode, electrolyte is added, and a plastic plug seals the capacitor up.

It would have been cool to see you charge the capacitor then test it with a volt meter. But I understand 10,000v multimeters are rarely just lying around. Maybe charge it then disconnect. Then create the arc. The distance of the arc would relate to the charged voltage.

Or use some high voltage resistors to create a voltage divider that would divide by a known value, then test across the connection between the resistors and low side. Divide by say 100 and the meter should tell you 100 VDC, which you would know means 10,000 VDC. Just be sure to use HV resistors with a tight tolerance so you'd know 100 VDC means 10,000 VDC +/-1% or less, as opposed to say 10,000 VDC +/-5%, which could be within 9,500 or 10,500 VDC, or +/-10% which would be anywhere between 9,000 to 11,000 VDC...

I believe that the input charges the cap, at every strike, then releases all voltage at once, at every strike. Without the cap, it just sparks a the regular fast frequency, but with it added, it builds up the volts, then releases it. I believe that if you were to make the cap twice as big, the spark would be even slower to build, then release.

@5;01 you made an error in saying to connect the purple/ blue lines together. These are dielectrics, not conductors. You should have connected to the orange lines. You could also cut tabs on the sides located in staggered location ( like a filing cabinet) so that you can solder one layer to the next

john michael not sure what you are asking exactly . The copper tabs are alternated left side , right side , and all the rights are soldered together and all left together which creates parallel capacitance . Parallel capacitance adds to be equal to c1+ c2 + .........Cn. So more layers increases capacitance.

I bet you can smell the discharge arc. Does it have an odour? I am quite surprised at the difference. and will make a nice side project for a high voltage generator such as in one of your previous projects :-)

Any arc like this through the air will create ozone. So yes it will smell just like an electric motor that is putting out a lot of sparks. Of course the sparks are hot so anything that can burn will. Like the tips of the electrodes which might also cause an additional smell.

Before the charche controller or after the charche controller. I have a converter for making 12 V to 220 V on my batteries (3000V-6000V). Really need very much an (simply) information. It is winter now and I have hardly electricity and my Plasma Q6 and Q24 are going down. They had already more than 110 V inside and now they are doing nothing, so no grow, and the Voltage is now between 55 V and 110 V. Again thanks for this video.

Such coil does not increase inductance - there are parallel conductors with opposite current flow inductance of which cancel each other - as a matter of fact your capacitor will have higher inductance - because you connected plates from opposite sides - you can decrease it by connecting wires from the same side.

yes, when you connect plates from opposite sides it means (for alternating current) that all current flows always the same direction in both plates - any flow of current creates a magnetic field. But if you connect plates from same side - current will flow in opposite directions in these plates, creating opposite and equal magnetic field, which cancel each other.

No no no... Regular rolled electrolytic caps probably doesn't have much of an inductance because the plate and dielectric layer is folded in half before it is rolled, making a turn around which cancels out the inductance. The manufacturers knows what they're doing.

Yes, you can use anything that can conduct energy well, alluminium is a good alternative, but be warned that your capacitance will be not the same with the same quantity of copper foil

The capacitor would get charged to 12v. So you would have 10nf (Nano farads) of electricity at 12V. The farads is kind of how many electrons you can hold. The max voltage of a capacitor is how excited those electrons can be before they jump across the plastic barrier. So this capacitor can not hold a lot of electrons you would need a lot more layers for that. But those electrons can be very excited at 10,000v without the electrons jumping and making an arc through the plastic. When you only put 12v across it you are not utilizing the fact it has the thick plastic layers. The plastic layer in standard 12v capacitors is very thin so you can get more layers of conductor in the same space but you will get an internal short at 24v or so which would mean no high voltage use. This is why a 100nf 12v capacitor is so small compared to a 100nf 600v capacitor. The 600v capacitor needs much thicker insulating layers.

That capacitor wasn't wound as a coil because a coil is like a spring but was instead wound in a cylindrical manner. Inductors are normally wound in a coil shape though.

The wires coming from the capacitor will also have some inductance. and you should also consider the skin effect. maybe use some thick litz wire instead :)

What makes this capacitor capable to withstand 10000V? Just because it is 10nF? How thick is the dielectric? How thick is the copper tape? Can you stick two copper strips into one? How can you make a Super Capacitor? Say 1F on 240V???

You can not build a super capacitor at home. Supercaps for 240V don't exist. The only way to make it, you'd have to put 90 single cells (2.7V) in series. And balance them.. But making 1F 240V like in the video you would need a bigger house.

An inductor (in this case the secondary of the flyback transformer) and a capacitor have a resonant frequency that is inversly proportional to the squareroot of inductance times capacitance, so increasing the capacitance of the arrangement (there was a negligible parasitic capacitance before) will decrease the resonant frequency, lowering the frequency of the sound created by the spark, which in this case is within the audible range now, and also increasing the pulse periode making it louder.

WOW!!! Thanks Bro for the extended response... It is awesome... So basically you are saying that in a way this setup turns into some sort of a Boost Converter and the Capacitor when it gets charged produces the LOW front of the square pulse, thus allowing the magnetic field stored in the coil to discharge increasing the original Voltage and current several times depending on the frequency of the pulse... Am I on the right side of understanding whats going on or am I not getting it?

Um no? It's a capacitor in parallel with the output of a flyback transformer. There is no boost converter here. The cap discharges very fast, the camera only records a picture once every 1/30 seconds and can't capture it properly. Try taking a picture of lightning during a thunderstorm and you'll see the problem.
