If you want a home gym, you really only need to start with three things, Dumbells: They're going to be the most expensive, a very customizable double set works best. A standalone pullup and crunch bar: This will be the most difficult thing to store in your home. The first thing i encourage everyone to do when it comes to forming new habits is to make it fun first. Doesnt matter if youre not doing 100%, you dont have to be like those who have had the lifestyle for 10years, start where you can start and dont make it hard. After a month or 2 itll become so much easier to stick to
@Siberius-5 ай бұрын
I like that advice. I like to research the shit out of things first and then come at it with something that is a lot more optimal than it could be (not to the extent of looking for perfection right off the bat, but still). But yea that can just be too much when starting something, and too rigid. Or you can, but make sure to allow for a LOT of flexibility, and still prioritise longevity through actually enjoying what you're doing. Being an absolute robot, is not great for longevity (generally). Actually I think I have a new approach from this moment on... when starting something out, INTENTIONALLY don't approach it in the way that you know is more optimal, and then there's really no need to hold off on getting started with it lol (as far as that is concerned).
@BaconManBruh5 ай бұрын
People that kept at it for 10 years are pretty much having fun like gotta most of them coz you can't get that invested in something that takes alot of discipline to do. Whenever i exit out i always tell the boys to enjoy themselves, i don't even say goodbye just enjoy so i probably sound condescending to some but i meant it.
@Siberius-5 ай бұрын
@@BaconManBruh - That is an important insight. People think these individuals have this insane "will-power", but no, they're just doing what they enjoy doing, and so it just doesn't require will-power for them (or very little).
@BaconManBruh5 ай бұрын
@@Siberius- If you enjoy what you're doing it stops being work and turns into a hobby. In every sport mood is important coz it gives you amazing stability and the lower your mood the lower you perform so it's really a big deal if you don't like what you're doing and you can always find something else about bodybuilding to enjoy like even if you don't like training what about the results seeing your body grow or the respect you gain for yourself or the attention you get from others so it's all a perspective kind of thing so there's always something to like from whatever it is you are doing but it will take effort to find it so giving it a chance is always worth it and that applies to alot of things in life.
@Siberius-5 ай бұрын
@@BaconManBruh - I like that concept. I finding/identifying the different motivations for what you're doing. Then just trying to make it fun is important. Doesn't have to be perfectly optimal or standard. My home gym set-up is very peculiar, because it's based entirely around how I personally like to train, which I just haven't seen anywhere else, but it's different and fun. I just watched a number of videos about Kyriakos Grizzly on OmarIsuf, Martins Licis, and Jujimufu's channels. He does it very differently (due to injuries, but is incredibly strong). Then also the videos with James Fuller on Jujimufu's channel (he knows a lot about old-time strongman, before standardised lifts and equipment existed, which is super interesting to see him do that and talk about that). "If you enjoy what you're doing it stops being work and turns into a hobby" Unless you actually make if your income JOB, because In practice that rarely seems to work out how people think it will. Once a hobby becomes your job, often all the fun gets sucked out of it, you ruin your hobby, and then it's just another job. So it's often better to have a little bit worse of a job, and then have your hobby stay fun and something you want to do in your leisure-time. Still a far better situation than having a terrible job, though.

I look at it the opposite way. If I work out right away, what I'm doing later on will suffer. So I put whatever I have left into the training later in the day. If that means less energy in the workout, so be it; better than not having enough energy for the mental and physical challenges of work, family, etc.

Same. I wake up to train early. Then I come home, drink some protein and creatine, shower, make breakfast, relax for a while and go to work. Or I relax a lot then go about my day off. Very true. When I started training, I was told to go in the morning. I found that I am not a morning person😂 always groggy. I worked night shifts so I tried to go after work if I can. Yeh…it was not working. I tried to go before my shift, I ended up just still being tired and my body still needed the rest from the previous night shift so I would end up just sitting on my couch and watching TV before my shift. I still attempt on my days off and found nights worked better and I was able to take my time and actually push myself a bit more and had more energy. So I was attempting about 2-3 times a week and did full body instead This continued when I changed to a 9-5 job. I find I’m more calmer, more energetic and generally more willing to go to the gym in the evening or night. Weekends are a fave as I can go later and now I am able to go about 5-6 times a week. Because my upper and lower and cardio days are separate, I don’t get fatigued easily as my muscle would have time to rest properly. I do upper and lower on Monday and Tuesday and I won’t do them until Saturday and Sunday so they can recover. In between I fit in cardio and core workouts and a rest day. My muscles grew quite a lot and now I love a good cut 😂 So absolutely find what time of day works for you!

@duffman184 ай бұрын
Rocky Balboa was a moron. I mean, they didn't even try to hide that fact in the films, but yeah. People are actually dumb enough in real life to copy the drinking raw eggs thing. It's so dumb because raw uncooked eggs literally only have _HALF_ the protein that cooked eggs do. So they're just throwing away their money, throwing away half of the potential protein they could be consuming down the toilet, by deciding to drink eggs (which is gross too) instead of just being normal and spending 5 minutes to simply cook them. Cooking eggs (like cooking all food) essentially pre-digests it for us. It doubles the bio-availability of the protein in the eggs so that we get double the amount of protein from it than we would if we drank them raw, because the heat has pre-digested the eggs for us and so our body is just able to extract much much more of the protein from them. This is why archaeologists consider the invention of fire to be one of the things that really kickstarted the evolution of our predecessor species, because now we could cook (i.e. pre digest) meat and veg and get WAY more nutrients out of our food as a result, meaning we got way more calories from them, and so we had enough calories to support big brains which take up a TON of energy to keep running, instead of having enormous digestive systems using up all that energy. Just compare humans to every other species of ape. All the other types of apes have way larger digestive systems than us human apes do, and much smaller brains. It's the fact we discovered fire and invented cooking that allowed our brains to grow huge, get as many brain gains and mass as possible, and not require such enormous digestive systems to be able to get enough calories and nutrients out of food anymore like the other ape species have. Especially when it came to animal products like meat and eggs. It's the fact we began eating meat, and cooked meat at that, which is jam packed full of great nutrients like protein and fat and overloaded with calories compared to fruit and veg, that really helped our brains grow so big. Which isn't to say that it's wrong to be vegetarian or vegan, because that'd be a stupid thing to say, because modern day nutritional science means we know how to get enough of all nutrients and minerals and calories out of vegetables and beans etc, that you can be perfectly fine without meat these days. But yeah inventing cooking, and starting to eat meat, is what separated us from the other apes. And yet despite all of that, the hundreds of thousands or even millions of years of evolution telling us that cooking food is a good thing, somehow there are modern day humans who are stupid enough that they actually think that it's a good idea drink raw eggs instead of eating cooked ones, and so they're throwing away both money and protein down the toilet, getting only half the protein from each egg as they would have done if they'd simply just cooked them like normal people. Like, the character of Rocky Balboa is supposed to be a complete moron, and that's not some kind of secret, in the films. And yet people are dumb enough to actually copy the moronic behaviours of the moron in the films.
@duffman184 ай бұрын
My problem is I only do the exercises that I like just to keep it fun. The ones I'm not good at or find difficult I avoid. So my solution was to get a Personal Trainer who is not going to let me get away with anything.😢

So long as you're sufficiently hitting all of the major muscle groups 2-3 times per week, I wouldn't even say that is a problem. There are a lot of popular exercises, particularly compound ones, which are probably inarguably the "best" option for certain muscle groups. But there are no single exercises that you NEED to do in order to make progress in either the short or long term. All of the alternatives also work.

I have a bench and dumbbells set up on my little backyard porch under an awning. Tricep machine is in the yard. That's my gym. My dad found everything for free on the side of the road. The dumbbells are rusty and so is the bar on the tricep machine, but everything works perfectly. I can't stand working out in a company gym.

Exactly! You have to build exercise into and around your schedule as part of a lifestyle. Even if that means training at different times. This was the hack I wish I had known at the beginning. It explains why I was so inconsistent because I was not fitting it in around my days. I would end up not going if I couldn’t go at a certain time or if it didn’t align perfectly with my schedule. I’d say I’m even more open now to training in the evenings after work if I needed to which I wasn’t before. I’ve realized I have to make time for the things that matter to me and my training does.

Absolutely true. I’ve found that I need a really good gym in the apartment that I live in to make it easy and I always go bare minimum Monday and Wednesday. Gives me the freedom to add more but also sometimes skip my other days to do activities.

The best progress i have gotten from the gym, came from literally just doing what i felt like doing. I love the stair master so id always do that, sometimes for a long time sometimes not. If i was feeling upper body id do that or if i wasnt maybe just do a set and move on to something else. I have a structure now but for that first couple months just doing anything was the best thing to do. I feel like people get a "chore list" for the gym and it doesnt last long for everyone. Thats how i was.

Its true. I used to force myself to go before breakfast to train fasted. But I actually started enjoying it when I relaxed took my breakfast and coffee and take my time to digest and relax and go when I am ready and awake and feel like it. So much stress is actually bad for gains
@gonnfishy298729 күн бұрын
1000% re stress bad for gains. Cortisol/lack of cortisol will actually kill you if you don't watch out. One NEEDS to lift with at least something in the tank like protein shake even, preferably a days' meals. Bodies don't build by breaking down existing tissue and turning it into new tissue, SHOCK FINDING
@Geheimnis-c2e7 күн бұрын
working out fasted only really works if you want to lose fat and even then it will probably leave you feeling like shit and lightheaded and probably hangry. i just chuck a sandwich in my mouth and a mug of coffee to start lmao always gets me going.
@franciscot19037 күн бұрын
@Geheimnis-c2e even then the last studies on training fasted show that there is not that big of a difference at the end. The fat loss is minimal compared to someone who is eating couple of hours prior to training so yes I guess if you are really intense ofn fat loss you can but personally I don't think it's worth the anxiety just to lose a little more

This is how I was able to start training consistently. I have a bench and dumbbells, that’s it. I just told myself to get into the area of the weights and put on my workout clothes. I told myself as long as you do a little bit that’s better than nothing. The first few times I barely did much, but the more I did it the easier everything got and eventually I actually wanted to do more. A tip that helped me is to find a good preworkout. It gets your energy up and you actually feel like exercising.

After spending years in gyms I moved to the countryside and built a home gym. Invested so far about 5k and worth every penny. I was always obsessed with the best routine, equipment or diet and once I finally realized consistency is king only then did I see progress. I eat protein heavy three times a day (usually around 120g) run consistently, simple body weight workouts daily and deadlift a kettlebell. Boom. No fancy gym membership, no crazy food supplements and only one piece of equipment that is relatively affordable and versatile. Seen better results in three months than in years of training in the past.

The "idk maybe Thursday" works for me as I've been training for a year and a half 3-4 days a week having only missed 1 week of no training due to sickness and 2-3 weeks of 2 days due to studies and travel and such It's much easier for me if the training isn't forced in to the daily schedule but instead into the weekly schedule (I force myself to go 3 days a week and not force myself on a monday for example so basically taking 3-4 rest days is fine as long as I force the rest to be gym days)

Best advice ever. I got back in the gym at 34 after 10 years of laziness by telling myself to just go and only work out as hard as I feel like that day. 8 months later, 50 lbs down, still doing 4-7 days per week, even with 60-80 hour work weeks. Am I going as hard as I was in February, my slow work month? No, but I'll go, even if it's just a forearm workout and 20 minute sauna session because I'm too tired to do a full workout

This is very important. This all or nothing mentality is just stopping you. A lot of my friends are like: "I can't exercise, I don't have time to go to the gym every two days or so for several hours" when in reality like half an hour twice a week is fine. Or once, it's still better than nothing. Or people are like: " I can't exercise. When I run I'm put of breath so fast". Like, who told you to run, just walk for like half an hour a day. The minimum recommendation is only 4000 steps a day, start with that. No need for expansive gear or torturing training if you are a beginner. Just start and stick to it and put in more work over time.

Eight years ago, after a body pain crisis and some friend deaths, I committed myself to workout three times a week no matter what. I'm 59 now and in the better shape of my life.

The hardest part for me is getting over the initial barrier of the habit of being in the gym. I’ve been lifting on and off for 10+ years and so I’ve taken plenty of long breaks to focus on cardio/sports. When I get back in the gym for the first time after a long break, something feels off about resting between sets and just being bored. But if I stick to it, after a few weeks of consistency, I’m way more in the moment, enjoying my music selection, feeling the burn of each set, and being in more tune with my body. And for some reason there’s less of a feeling of boredom because there’s less public anxiety and I’m able to just relax and reflect. It becomes very therapeutic.

To anyone on the fence or considering working out, I promise you will be beyond happy with yourself if you start it and keep it up. It will vastly improve your physical and mental health, I hardly feel like the same person at times. Start out as light as you want and when you're fine with doing that, turn the notch up a little bit and repeat. You can make it as easy on yourself as you want, there're no rules about how you have to workout just that you do is enough

The biggest thing that helped me years ago was to write everything down and track data!!! Through regular weigh ins, I saw the constant and never ending fluctuations. Despite being super disciplined and never changing every week, I would still be up 4 or 5lbs one week, down 7 or 8 the next. And 1s and 2s and maybe even some off weeks that screwed things up, but trough it ALL was loss of weight and building of muscle. It just takes TIME!!! Post its, an app, your calendar just stick with it!!! Scale Sadness/Depression can only get you THIS week and next week you'll be Euphoric!!!!!
