With respect its not about the poly count, its about technique and for making the normal maps you are talking about, you will need this technique to get this mesh and bake into normal texture.

You'd take the single cross thread make a normal from that and then tile it a bunch

suggest using a normal map for a commercial or for something near the camera in a 3d animation and you will get laughed out of the room. because while it does look good enough for some application purposes it does not look teh same like you claimed it does. ofc you wouldnt use this in a game, but not everything in 3d is made for games. so next time, if "you'r" smart, think about this before you give advice.
