The name "Red Bud" comes from it being one of the first trees to flower in spring. The flowers are a beautiful reddish purple. I have seen branches of one of these trees have a almost maroon red core and light brown on the outside. Yes it is a very hard wood and grows slowly. The piece you have is from a very old tree. Every Red Bud I've ever seen was very small in size. Great job, once again Red Bud trees are not common and generally grow in the piedmont region of the south east and north into southern Ohio and West Virginia. It also has a heart shaped dark green leaf. Those of us in the south know that spring is here when the Red Bud blooms. ;-)

One of the things I like the best about your channel Phil, is the variety of wood species you turn. Very interesting to see the variety of bark and grain. Phil that bowl has a WOW factor off the scale. And it sure wasn't a Bud Lite. All those features wrapped up in one. The grain just swirls between all the inclusions. You could look at it for hours not see everything because it would change as you moved it. Sure glad you was able to save that bark. Not an easy turn but you would not know that watching you. So we just had a Sweet Gum taken out earlier this year and planted an Oklahoma Red Bud. It is a Bud Lite right now because it less than 2 inches at the base. Gee I wonder what I could turn out of that? And ours even had a few red buds right after we planted it. Great job buddy! Gary

In mid-Michigan, redbud trees are a decorative tree that has beautiful red buds in the spring time.I haven't seen any that are thick enough to produce a blank like you turned. I must be at the northern limit for growing these, at least until global warming catches up. I planted 5 in my yard in the 90's, and they grew for two years and then died during a very cold winter. My neighbor has one in her courtyard (protected from the wind) and it does quite well, though.
