I definitely want to make them. Thanks so much for the wood projects. So tired of the Dollar tree things that end up looking like crap in person and that I could never sell.
@MissMolly33772 жыл бұрын
That is exactly how I feel. There are a few people who can make it look great, but the majority are just copying what the next person does, just changing the colors, to fit in their homes. I would much rather watch thrift flips, but even those are starting to get boring, it just seems like they paint it and add a transfer to it. It is hard to find something unique. I like seeing someone build it with their own hands.

I found that when making my work look aged, i take a handful of gravel, throw it on the driveway, put the piece down on it and walk on it, also taking my feet and dragging it over the gravel.. Love this video! I used your ''hammer'' technique on another type of wood project...I didn't have a ''hammer'' at the time I was doing my project,so I used ''two rocks about the size of my hand and one was smooth and was abit ''jagged'' to make ''stress marks'' on my project....came out ''awesome'! I was careful doing this with the rocks in case they broke in my hand..but they worked ''excellent". Next time I'll wear gloves and protected eyewear. I just went out to my garden where we had ''decorated rocks'' so now I guess they have become my "pet rocks". Again,I love your creations!

I would like to see that, too. I watch Julie's Designs and Signs and she said she prices hers per inch. This was a good video. Julie`s Signs and Designs here on KZbin has some great, thorough tutorials on making the bread boards (and so much more) as well. You can free hand the handles or make a pattern to add some variation. When you cut one side of the handle, you can use the part you cut off, flip it and lay it on the other side of your handle, trace with a pencil and it will always be symmetrical. Twine around the handle with a sprig of greenery or florals sell really well to. I'm not sure about what type of wood is needed to make it food safe but I have learned that polycrilic becomes food safe if it cures properly first. I learned that from making lazy Susan's and trays. I'm sure a simple Google search will give us all of the answers on that. I enjoyed the video made after this one as well. I recommend that everyone check it out. The options are as endless as your imagination. If you can make them food safe AND beautiful decor pieces I bet they will sell even better. Thank you for sharing this video. 😊

A genuinely, safe cutting board should ONLY be made with hard wood like Walnut, hickory, maple or cherry, then treated with oil to protect it.. Softwood should never be used..fibers are soft which allows bacteria to grow.
@OurUpcycledLife2 жыл бұрын
I only make mine for ornamental. I don’t know all the different types of wood ☀️
@KMF32 жыл бұрын
@@SusanHCooper I actually did some research and you can actually use any type of wood and it will be food safe. People usually prefer hard wood because it doesn't have as deep of cuts. How you finish the board will determine if it is food safe. Also the softer wood could be used more for a charcuterie board but still be food safe. Seal it with mineral oil and beeswax. There are also some water based stains that are food safe.

I was going to comment on the same thing. In general, don't use gloves when using power tools that cut. If the material snags, you can lose digits. I totally get using gloves to hold your project down, though. I'd recommend using clamps for this purpose. The other thing is that while it's great to wear eye protection, you'll probably want hearing protection as well as a dust mask. Especially with salvaged wood, you don't know what you're breathing. Still, cool project. I know these are decorative boards. People really love them!

Yes that make great signs! You could do the same thing with those as you would these cutting boards. I have a tutorial coming out next week with all the ideas on how to finish them off. Keep a eye out for that one. You might find some inspiration

Recycled wood is a great idea for DECORATIVE cutting boards. The key word is decorative as in these boards should not be used for direct contact with food unless you are confident they are not contaminated with toxins. Palette wood = contaminated Found wood = contaminated Bleaching is okay for bacteria but does not eliminate toxins or poisons. Please be careful

Yes only for decor as stated in my video

I've made some cutting boards recently and none of them sold. Do you think they sell better if you paint them and put a sign on them? I tried a few that I left raw wood or just stained and a few that were decor with either glass and resin or a sign. I priced them all low at $25-30.

I think every area is different so its hard to say. I always find a good rule is to go to a couple local gift shops and see what they have in stock and that will give you a vibe for product that will sell in your area.

@@OurUpcycledLife I'm in a very southwestern little town and people are telling me anything with horses or southwestern vibe. I made a few glass on glass mosaics with epoxy resin of a horse and cactus, both sold. So maybe if I do some kind of southwestern design that will work.

Just curious, do you have problems with applying the reverse print on the wood when it has been distressed, in certain areas, and not smooth?
@OurUpcycledLife2 жыл бұрын
Yes wood needs to be smooth or it is harder to rub off!
