My mom always has me put a safety pin on the end of elastic before pulling it through. It gives you something more rigid to work with. This also works with putting drawstrings back into garments when they come out.

I haven’t done much sewing in years but I used to do a lot and my aunt taught me. She was big on “finishing”. That is what made garments look like they were professionally made. Sergers finish the seams and if you are going to sew a lot, they are an investment. Your project is fairly complex and you did a good job. It is not easy!

What a gorgeous dress! You did a great job. I am in awe - I can do very simple sewing projects. And even simple curtains can take a very long time to do right. A dress this complicated is really a wonderful accomplishment!!

Well done on your dress! It’s so pretty, and the fit looks spot-on - making those muslins really paid off. Before washing it just zigzag your major seam allowances so they won’t fray and you’ll be set.

You did an awesome job and that finished dress looks great. It's really rare for a beginner sewist to make a muslin (let alone two!) so well done on your perseverance, but you show how it really pays off to invest that time at the beginning of a project. Nailed it! Also, there's another finishing technique that you could go back and do before washing the dress. It's sometimes known as machine neatening, and just involves turning under the raw edge of the seam allowance, pressing it, then doing a line of straight stitches down the length. It looks much nicer and works better than a zigzag IMO. French seams are my favourite finish though!

I love your dress and prefer it without the slit, to be honest. If you want to finish the inside seams so they don't fray, you could "pink" it, which means trim it with pinking shears. Just be careful when you do.

The sewing instructions can be quite complicated 🤯 video tutorials are huge help for beginners 😅👍 the dress looks great on you 🤩 You should zigzag the dress, especially linen will fray a lot if you skip this step 😕
