My thing is that the coating always costs me the most and takes the most time. I tend to use Helmsman Spar or Polycrylic and to get the nice even high build glossy finish my projects eat up a can of spray in no time. Example , I just did a double board sign (with chains) roughly the size of two or three of the boards you used in this video and I had to use a full spray can plus maybe a quarter from another and I pay around $14 a can , so that eats into my profit and raises what I have to charge. I've watched most of your videos I think and some on coating but wonder if I'm doing something wrong that's making me use too much ? An in depth updated video on coating, finishes, time, costs, etc. would be great. Also , the differences between brushing or spraying. I haven't brushed any yet, though I have a can of Polycrylic I'm going to try on a practice board. I have an air sprayer I haven't tried yet and eventually will get a critter sprayer but have only used spray cans so far on what I sell. I also run into grainy looking finishes sometimes, even if I take time to sand between coats, which mostly I've learned to avoid and just sand (sometimes ) before the final coat. I've also wondered how you handle coating when carving on site because it takes so much time to cure and multiple coats to get a great gloss finish built up ?
@oldave100
@oldave100 Жыл бұрын
Great questions man. 1: when doing a batch of signs we usually use a critter sprayer which saves money 2: we’ll definitely do an updated video on finishing. Soon. 3: when carving onsite, I usually only put 2 coats on and let them know that they’ll have to add a few coats. I’ve never had any complaints

@@oldave100 would you suggest investing in an air compressor…I wait until the paint dries, sand, and then use a leaf blower to get rid of the dust but saw dust always remains in the carved areas - you ever have this problem?

I really like an air compressor. I would find it hard to get by without one. When I'm carving onsite at shows we don't use one but I really miss it when we can't use it.

I'd guess if I took my time and tried light coats that these boards in this video would probably take a full can for every two boards and that's $14 not counting board costs, etc. , so hard to sell boards for $20 and make it worth it. Of course, doing the assembly line style definitely would save some time and getting the boards small enough would help too.
@oldave100
@oldave100 Жыл бұрын
If you’re using a full can on 2 small signs, you’re way over spraying. It should take maybe 4 or 5 light coats to get a good finish.
