THANK YOU!!! I've never seen this drafting business. For forty years, I've hacked away at a Kenmore machine that belonged to my mother, and I had no idea that there is a way to do this that is simple, elegant, and logical. What's more amazing is that I will be able to do it using stuff I already have: tissue paper from CVS, a bedsheet retrieved from my donate pile, a tape measure, and a good pair of scissors. I had to look up 'balancing' a pattern--also brilliant! It explains why I looked like such a ragamuffin in the 80s, and not so much like Madonna or Cyndi Lauper. My plans now include making a SHARP pair of britches! Brava!

This process requires an enormous amount of patience and dedication. Thank you for sharing your journey towards “Fit-Ness”. It was much more complex compared to other tutorials I’ve watched because it included your evaluation of the fit on camera and the discussion of your findings. This aspect is extremely helpful to viewers because it explains each area that does not fit properly and the reasons why the fit is “off”. I found this very helpful. Without this portion of the video, we are left with a pattern block that theoretically looks great on paper but fails once executed evidenced by analyzing where the fit falls short. In other videos viewers assume that after the block is complete on paper, the fit must be perfect. I think showing the pants sewn and modelled is just as important as taking measurements and translating them into a block. This video was technically well done. The verbal description of the entire process was equally well done. I will definitely attempt to make a pants pattern block using this video as my guide. Thanks again for a very thorough tutorial which was informative as well as enjoyable. Bravo!

Ive seen so many pant tutoriaks and I keep coming back to this video coz it covers everything. very very perfect and professional. I've a question.. If someone don't wear their pants on waist, and prefer a little bit lower, do I still have to draft it from waist?
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi Жыл бұрын
I think you could draft from lower but it's easier I think, to draft from the waist then just measure down on each line however much you want to lower the waist. That's what I do ☺️

The front and the back have a straight line going down the middle of the leg and you have distances from there. The crotch is like a circle but the "middle part" is brought toward the front. So that "dip" you see, it connects into a half circle and goes under the crotch. Then you need darts, usually mid way in front and back to gather fabric to accommodate the shape from the wide hips to the waist. It's harder to explain than understand. It's really simple.

You may have got my extension confused. The front extension is 1/16 of your entire hip girth. So if your hip is 40, divide 40 by 16 and that is how much your have to add for the front crotch extension. The back extension is 1/8 of your entire hip girth so, again, if your full hip girth is 40, divide 40 by 8 and that is your back crotch extension. I need to correct that in the video.

@@MrAlexandraJane you have a 10 inch difference so you can do the same dart widths as me. Since your high hip isn’t too far off your hip you may find that shortening the darts a bit may help. But you’ll have to test it first :)

This was really detailed and I'm going to try drafting this. The place where I'm currently learning, keeps front and back the same and i know from just looking at existing pants that the crotch length fr front and back has to be diff, so I'll try this. I wanted to know whether adding a waistband (abt 1.5 inches) affects this drafting. Shld we measure crotch length from top of waistband or excluding it.

Thanks for the very detailed tutorial. I appreciated that you showed how to measure the body and the adjustments you made. I look forward to your final adjustment video. I tried your instructions. It was mostly clear, except for two areas, that I wasn't sure about. 1) at the point where you extended the crotch line: I misunderstood 1/2 back & 1/4 front hip measurement, thinking it was the entire front/back measurement. I eventually realized it was 1/2 the back block & quarter the front block. 2.) the grain line: the instructions AB & BC divided by 1/4" didn't look correct, to me. I didn't know what to do, so I went based on your demonstration; which seemed more like 1/2 AB/BC. Sorry for the long message. Let me know if I am wrong. Thanks much

wonderful video, I am currently in the process of making pantalons that can accommodate suspenders. the modern clothing retailers within my reach skip the bit between the waist and the hips (I think because its cheaper and men don't know how comfortable suspenders are). I think I need to alter a few things to this method (I need excess width for suspenders) but this video taught me many things. should result in a cleaner silhouette than altering an oversized pair by lowering the crotch(gaining height of the band/length of the rise). any recommendations on things that I should do different than the method in this video as I am making this for trousers worn by man?
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi 3 жыл бұрын
so if I am understanding correctly you want a higher waist pant for suspenders? I think maybe mens trousers have less of a deep dart on the waist, it just all depends on your measurements. If you follow this according to your measurements you should be ok :)

CROTCH EXTENSION CLARIFICATION: The front extension is 1/16 of your entire hip girth. So if your hip is 40, divide 40 by 16 and that is how much your have to add for the front crotch extension. The back extension is 1/8 of your entire hip girth so, again, if your full hip girth is 40, divide 40 by 8 and that is your back crotch extension. It is correct in the video if you ignore the additional note I put on the screen in orange letters. Just remember that we are working with one side of the front hip and one side of the back hip, and for the front extension you would find a 1/4 of the front width of your draft and add that as the extension. For the back you would find 1/2 of the front width of your draft and add that as the back extension. Its the same thing as above just may be more confusing to some.

Wonderful! I went to Ryerson in Toronto Canada, its a pretty good program. I know there are a lot of schools in the states and in Europe but I didn't really look at them as I wanted to stay in Canada. I wish you the best on your fashion school journey!!

When do you recommend walking the pattern/block” - before your first muslin or after all the muslin/samples you’ve tweaked “to perfection”?
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi 2 жыл бұрын
Walk it right away I would say, or at least before your final sample, but right after you draft, its best so that you don't have to worry, and walk it every time you make adjustments that could mess with the seams matching ☺️

This is very good... however, is there a measurement formula for pants with elastic waist? 🎉
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi Жыл бұрын
with elastic waist, the waist area needs to be at least as wide as your hips so you can get it over them :)

@@LydiaNaomi Yes... so that's very logical, and I presume I can add as much ease as I like? Any advice, re: tapering the extra into the legs?

Nice explanation. How does the process change for men's pants? Thanks
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi 3 жыл бұрын
I would have to look into that but, you would basically follow the same process just have much shallower darts as men have less curves *typically*

Hey this is probably super late but one fit issue I struggle with in shorts is that they ride up. Or, my thighs eat them. I haven’t really found an off the rack option for shorts that are comfortable for me so looking to make my own. I think this could be a crotch length issue.. but would love to hear your opinion. If it fits into any of your future videos would love to see! Thanks!

Hi, thank you so much for this video! I have a question regarding the first sample you made. I made my block and it fits perfectly EXCEPT for the two flaps that stick out of the sides of the hips (like in your first sample). I know you said you corrected this in the block creation, but I'm wondering if you can walk me through how you did it? I tried to take in the hips slightly and it didn't seem to work...Thanks for any help you can offer :)
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jenny, that happens because the curve is too high. Put your sample on inside out and pinch and pin the seams where it is sticking out, then either measure it or place it against your pattern and trace it out so that it fits your hips right :)

when you say half of crotch depth or 1/8 of hip girth - does that include the added ease? also, initially it says to add 1/2" of ease to crotch depth, but in the next shot it says 3/4" of ease. which one? thank you, great video.
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi Жыл бұрын
Yes to the first and I did 1/2" ease but you can choose whatever you prefer, you can always move it up or down after your first ample ☺️ Also see the description or pinned comment if you have confusion about the crotch addition 💗

Hi Lydia! Thanks for this really helpful video. I'm finding that when I add a quarter of my waist girth to my dart intake, and then position it 3/4" from the CB, the end of my back waist goes past the center line of the rectangle. I've double-checked all my measurements but everything seems to be right... Have I done something wrong, or do I need to adjust the rectangle because of my waist-hip proportion? Thanks!
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi 10 ай бұрын
You can go out directly from CB instead of first adding 3/4" ☺️

Lydia! I followed this video to the T and my pants came out PERFECT! I had a little hiccup with the length but I'll just extend it. I do have an issue though- at 8:40, you mentioned "add 1/2 inch seam allowance". does this apply to the pants all around for both front and back blocks (excluding the hem and waist)? or just for the front. I forgot to add seam allowance and my pants came out fine but I just couldn't pin it shut because of the gap, lol. Sorry for the long comment, but thank you so much for everything!!!
@ataraxiastemple

++++also- would I need to add the seam allowance if i already included the ease in my block when i was drafting it from the start?
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi 2 жыл бұрын
When you sew something you always need seam allowance. Because the outer lines of your draft are the sew line so you need that allowance beyond it. You can do wahtever seam alowance you want just more than 3/8" is ideal :) Happy sewing! I am so glad it turned out great for you!
@LydiaNaomi
@LydiaNaomi 2 жыл бұрын
yes, ease it to keep the garment from being skin tight, seam allowance is so that you sew your garment accurately and don't make it smaller :)
