As a kid I remember the Cuba crisis and I couldn't understand why it was wrong for the Russians to have nuclear weapons in Cuba but it was OK for the USA to have their weapons here in the UK and in Germany. But the USA decided if there was to be a third world war they wanted to fight it in Europe where the first two had been fought! Good vlog Mali and Neal.

Wonderful day spent together Mali, thoroughly enjoyed your company. I saw a note below from @garygough - in terms of this airfield it would never open again, not least because the only piece of runway left is the centre point. Everything else was dug up and used to lay the foundations for the A34 bypass around the town. The hangers now house cars and stuff... and the land was sold back to the people for the princely sum of £1. A real privilege to see you at work Mali, it really was.

Very interesting piece Mali and good to see nature reclaim what was rightfully hers! Liked the intro but I remember it from the other side of the wire. I was there in '87 on perimeter guarding duties, at the time there was 3/4 protester sites dotted around and saw some very strange sights and goings on! One thing that stood out was the fab facilities, particularly the food outlets. Which I'm told was occasionally exchanged for some protester company! Wealthy activists also had lawyers close-by to ensure we carried out our duties correctly...... Happy times

I was one of the servicemen who slept just a walking distance away from 96 nuclear missiles, but I'll be honest, I felt safer then than I do now with the war hawks salivating over the fight in Ukraine. We are much more at risk of nuclear war now than we ever were during RAF Greenham Common's hay day.

Need I say it, excellent shots. The fear of Nuclear War was a great shadow over my youth and I was one of those people at the biggest demonstration in the early 80's linking hands. Although I came from a big city I'd never seen so many people in my life, many more than the biggest football stadium that I've ever been to. I still live close to one of the biggest nuclear 'targets' in Western Europe and have only two degrees of separation between myself and those involved in the greatest waste of taxpayer's money. Not a pacifist but can see better conventional uses for the cash.

I am approaching 50 (very soon) and remember some of this in the states during the 80's but I think most of the fear had dwindled off by then. Mostly I remember all of the cold war movies from the time. Let's all hope we never have to experience that level of fear again... If everyone was a photographer and taught to see the inherent beauty in the world we live in, perhaps it would be a much better place. Well done Mali! Also the cow poo made me laugh!

However awful the prospect of any nuclear war is, for that very reason, we need to arm ourselves to the hilt to avoid it. The world is as dangerous a place as it's ever been, we must retain a strong deterrent.

I really enjoyed that. I remember growing up in the 70’s and living through the 80s when they showed the movie ‘threads’ I was scared sh@;:less watching it. I always listened to the news thinking we would be attacked by the Soviet Union. Lol Lovely shot at the end of the video and enjoyed the history from Neil. ❤

As much praise as the Peace Women got/get for protesting the base, yes the base is gone, but the threat of nuclear war is as real as it was in 1962. At least Reagan and Gorbachev had elements of restraint at that time. NATO and Russia could go at it any minute...

Cheered me right up. I’ll be honest straight up. They would of done it already and you know what fear is a great way to control people. I live for today and they can do what they want I’m not stopping my life for worry and fear anymore.
