Interesting and use videos. I strongly believe BBC Learning English is a top observer for culture gaps. Using please isn't enough is something known well by all the natives. However, because of the culture differences, the learners don't know this, resulting in they upset the natives without awareness. Great work, BBC Learning English!

I liked the video. This episode explores language you can use to make polite requests. Phrases from the programme: I was wondering if you could do something for me... Would you be able to print out a file for me? Could I have it within ten minutes please? Could you possibly help me with the printer? Would you mind writing your email later?

Thanks for the video. I just have a question, when we use the expression "I was wondering if you could help me move" is it always necessary to use could? or is it possible to use other verbs in past or expressions?
@ProfesorNativo Жыл бұрын
Hi... the answer is 'yes'. Because the sentence is in past - 'I was wondering' (to be less direct) the rest of the sentence also has to use the past tense. For example: 'I was wondering if you had any more biscuits.' Hope that helps!

@sanjidaislam40644 жыл бұрын
Hello.these aren’t adjectives.possibly is an adverb and mind is a verb here.

Why "I was wondering if you..."?? Correctly is "I will wonder" Am I right?
@bbclearningenglish8 жыл бұрын
Hi, "I will wonder if..." is not correct. You can either say, "I wonder if you can..." or, to be even more polite, "I was wondering if you could....". We use the past continuous here to make the request less direct and more polite - it's not actually talking about the past.

What does the verb 'upset' mean ? I have checked in an online-dictonary and it says that it means: to make someone sad, to make someone worried about something, to get to someone. And in some cases it is synonymous to 'anger' as the verb. Could someone possibly explain that to me? I would be grateful. I am kind of confuced by that. Thanks in advance.
@mariamendez64837 жыл бұрын
Hi, upset usually means either sad or angry, maybe the meaning angry is even more common. So yes, to upset someone is to make them either angry, sad or worried. In this video it's clearly angry :)

@bbclearningenglish6 жыл бұрын
Hi! Tom says 'Ask Denise. she should know.' He is referring to the file that Anna needs to email. She doesn't know where it is and so Tom tells her to ask Denise.
