That Dodge car commercial with the “push button drive” was awesome.
@marykeegan26063 ай бұрын
My family had a 1958 Plymouth station wagon with that push button transmission. It was an interesting feature, until my then 2 .5 year old brother decided he wanted to drive the car like dad. He pushed the R button, just like dad did, and the car rolled down the driveway and across the street into the park. Luckily, no one was hurt, except maybe my brother’s bottom. My parents made sure that the car was always locked and that my brother was always the last one in the car, always accompanied by an adult. This same brother had a knack with tools, even as a toddler. My mom gave him a screwdriver to play with, and he managed to take the mail slot off the front door. He ended up owning a very successful auto shop before he retired 2 years ago.

28:34 - 28:38 From the oh-so-familiar living room set, facing the camera, Danny: "We'll see you next week for Pall Mall famous cigarettes" that was immediately preceded by Jean's little ditty about their sponsor, the 1956 model Dodge automobiles. Then Jean joins in with their sweetly and friendly-delivered together, cheek-to-cheek sign-off and wish "Goodnight." It looks natural, sweet and sincere while conveying the business aspect of letting the audience know who's paying for producing this fun half hour. Those few seconds are something one will never see on Cozi or MeTV rebroadcasts. For that and more, we say "Thanks, 'William Berrin.'"

I remember watching the original cast episodes in 1956 (I was 4 years old & watching TV all the time). The next season, I saw Marjorie Lord as the "new" wife. I asked my mom where the first wife was (Margaret), and my mom said "She died". In the show, she did "die". I felt a bit sad, especially since I liked the Jean Hagen character better than the Marjorie Lord character.

"rolex452," thanks for sharing your favorable memories and insight. However, you kind of 'jumped ahead' by skipping the 4th season where Danny Williams was a widower and Terry and Rusty motherless. Your mom explaining "she died" would have been at the top of year 5; Marjorie Lord joined the family AS A REGULAR that 5th season, after being introduced as Kathy, the widowed nurse and single mom the end of the 4th. This episode is a gem; seeing it uncut is really sweet; and the original commercials and sponsors' announcements a kick. And get this: 25 minutes of content -- "wow!" -- vs. today's 20:30 to 21:30 minutes (approximate). Furthermore, there's only two commercials -- one two-minute spot for Dodge mid-show, between Act I and Act II and one, single minute for Pall Mall smokes between the second act and the tag; plus the half minute sponsor's message at the top of the show. Those cluttered nine minutes today in a "30"-minute sitcom consist of dozens of quick ads throughout four interruptions. Editorial comment: "Look how far we've regressed." Thank you, "William Berrin," especially for: 1) uncut, full-length as seen on ABC, 1956 and 2) including the main and end titles -- the latter which some KZbin presenters eliminate. A pet peeve for most. "Good night."

Three nights following the presentation and live telecast of the 8th (annual) Emmy Awards on March 17, 1956, this March 20, 1956 (season three) episode is introduced, following voice-over, music scored clips of the sponsor's product / cars driving down a scenic country lane bordered by white fences with " . . . Dodge and the Dodge dealers of America present the winners of the Academy of Television's Arts and Sciences Award" leading into the Main Title's normal practice of the show's title and each regular's name accompanied by announcement and scripted name over their image(s). What's confusing is that despite six nominations -- remarkable in itself -- it went home with 0 of those beautiful, coveted statuettes, unlike the previous (7th) awards representing "Make Room"'s second season, it was awarded with four nominations and won two, Best Situation Comedy and Thomas for Best Actor in a Regular Series. In reality, the show WAS a winner -- just not that year. And the facts the term used is "winners" -- plural -- implies the previous year's Best Situation Comedy. Considering the time and skills to hurriedly incorporate film and voice-over elements into the main title, could the powers-that-be been so hopeful that surely they'd win one, or a few, of the six nominations? Or, were they 'covering their bases' with an announcement that could be interpreted for the just concluded Awards OR referencing last year's if indeed there wasn't a win for any of the six nominations? As for the experience of viewing this episode from around 65 years ago, 'Don't Yell at Your Children' -- what a good time; a chestnut indeed!

If you don't mind my asking are these early episodes from some public domain disk? The reason I ask id i would love to own these episode that you've uploaded. I have one disk of early Jean Haen episodes. they include, A TRIP TO WISCONSIN, THE BALLPLAYERS, AND THE CHILDREN'S GOVERNESS. There are so many more from the early period I'd love to own as well as the episode LITTLE MISS MOPPET which features the first appearance of Linda who was played in that episode not by Angela Cartwright, but by Lei Lani Sorenson
@berrin2229 жыл бұрын
+Chris Mulwee Yes, these early episodes are in the public domain. I bought them all on DVDs sold on ebay (seven DVDs total). I loaded everything from Seasons 1 to 3 that I could find apart from three episodes with bad sound quality. I downloaded Little Miss Moppet from KZbin before it was deleted. I recommend using 'Free KZbin Downloader' for anything you want to keep permanently. If you like, I will load Little Miss Moppet to KZbin for a few days so you can copy it to your computer.

William Berrin Okay I've looked on amazon but the reviews are very foggy. often they are for another set other than the one I'm looking for. So I've the one from Digiview that has the episode I talked about all three have their orginal opening and closings. So if you can tell me which remaining DVD's are the one's toget so that I don't keep buying the same ones.

+Chris Mulwee I bought everything except 1. Critics' Choice volume one (cover photo of Danny, Terry and Rusty), 2. Television Classics vol 2 (cover with red banner top, photo of Danny, Terry, Rusty) and 3. Television Classics, no volume number (yellow banner top, photo of Danny and Margaret). That avoids duplication of episodes.

Jean Hagen’s estate owns a percentage of the first three seasons. So if those episodes are rerun, they have to get paid. And since there are hundreds of episodes without her, they just show those. Plus, the show didn’t become a big hit until it moved to CBS, with Marjorie Lord as the wife. Those episodes are the ones that are most familiar.
