If you turn your SMS message to MMS using the method you just described in the video won't the network provider still charge? Virgin have said that when your SMS message is converted to MMS you are charged for it. They say SMS changes to MMS at just beyond 160 characters. So to avoid charges I must remain within the 160-character limit.

That is not a good idea! If you are on a annual or monthly contract for a bundle then it will comprise of texts (SMS), calls and data, it will not include MMS messages. The calls, texts(SMS) and data (within the data limit purchased) will all be regarded as (in contract) = paid for in the monthly cost you paid but not any MMS messages these will be an extra added on cost that you will incur in addition to your monthly payment. If your SMS messages are over 160 characters then they are often combined and converted into an MMS message and then your carrier will charge you extra for sending an MMS message. To avoid this with most Android phones you need to go into messages>settings>Multimedia message (MMS)> Creation Mode> Restricted. Then most modern Android phones will show you the message over 160 characters being broken up into chunks/parts of up to 160 characters (you will normally see a small counter alongside your composing window often counting down to show how many characters you have left or counting up to 160 (142/1 is 142 characters in message part 1). Your composing screen will show the whole message and the message when received is re-assembled in to a single message also. If you leave Creation Mode on "Free" you will not be warned and the messaging app will automatically change the long SMS into a MMS without notifying you. If you set Creation Mode on "Warning" then you will see a quick message flash up warning you that it is being changed to MMS as you have exceeded the 160 character limit, this allows you to adjust you message to stay under the 160 characters to prevent conversion to MMS and avoid that extra cost.

I've got a problem: when someone sends a message in a group chat the message from every person comes up as a multamedia message and I have to manually download each message from each person that sent a message, and when people are constantly texting in the group chat it becomes very annoying, does anyone know how to fix this?

Black Lion there should be a setting in message settings that you can turn on to allows mms messages to be downloaded automatically. I only ever have to download my group messages manually when I'm out of my service range.

Just a heads up. I just tried this and sent 1 message instead of 3 but got charged 65p instead of being free as MMS aren't part of your monthly tariff (only SMS) in UK. (maybe it's different in US). So best to check your tariff before you try this. If I did this 100 times in a month my phone bill would quadruple from £20 to £85. So be careful. It's an expensive option just to make the message more appealing to the recipient.

We don't have this texting limitation in Canada. I found this out the hard way, by buying a phone from the states only to find out I can't send a text with more than 160 characters, it is really annoying and I've tried 3 different message aps, no effect, it is built into the design of the phone, weird. I hate having to watch how much characters I'm typing. I tried this "hack" discussed above and it didn't work, the message wouldn't send. Even if it did work, you still have to manually change it to MMS which I never had to do before, your phone would do it automatically for you.

Doesn't work for my Note 8, T-Mobile carrier. I used to be able to do this w my Note 2 easily thru Verizon bc it had "add subject" in menu choices. On my Note 4 thru T-Mobile no such animal. However, if I added a picture, or typed my text w/o a contact entered (which I figured out late b4 getting my Note 8) then I could either add text under the pic & it wd go as MMS (However, I couldn't put a name in contact yet bc if I did, the doggone program wd just automatically send the pic. It took me awhile to figure that brainchild marvel. I swear, the more tech "savvy" we've become the stupider we've gotten. Think about it. W all of our high falutent, "advanced" technology, computers, etc, we still haven't figured out the pyramids, and we haven't built a plane faster than that marvelous beauty the "Habu" aka the SR-71 Blackbird. Yep. Of course how many people walked in front of cars or other stupid things bc their brains were too busy following that... oh whatever that thing was. I forgot. Pt is, I'm only 63 & can't believe how far bkwds we've gone in such a short time. We used to be tops in education, inventions, etc. But now we're busy raising gobots in our public brainwashing I mean education system. Kids graduating w absolutely no idea what Pearl Harbor means, or any history, except for the ltd amt of PC approved rewritten history. I know of a college kid, playing football. He was invited to a quinceanera in New Mexico. He said he couldn't go bc he didn't have a passport! I'm not joking. He understood it wasn't Mexico but NM, & yet... these kids can't spell or do math bc of these stupid no fail policies bc they're afraid of hurting their poor little "self-respect" or whatever self mode is the PC word of the day is. Forget about their self-esteem... that's the word I was looking for. Forget about their self-esteem when they can't get a job bc they can't even fill out a job app, let alone sign it since they no longer teach cursive [except the Verna cursive abuse these kids throw at teachers & God forbid if a teacher dare stand up to those kids to try & instill in them a sense of right & wrong. They can put on a condum... I guess good eye-hsnd coordination eh? &... oops. Sorry. My ADHD meds wore off & I'm going a mile a minute... argh.] back to phones... back to phones), or once it reached 160 chars you cd see it go the the next "page" & once you got to roughly 11-1200 total chars... or was of 11 or 12... I don't remember, but pt is it wd convert to MMS automatically. But only if you kept no name in the contact. However, I've tried everything w this dumbphone including gone to the store. I think they might have g often something to trick it but as always, once an update comes everything that was working well bottoms out. Oh well. Anyways if anyone has figured this out... I'm going to try the store again. Oh yeah. I can't use the picture trick anymore bc when u attach a pic it doesn't allow you to add text. I've tried but no go. Argh!

That's what happens to me. I get charged if it turns into a multimedia text so if I send more than the limit that the three texts allow I have to send it and write another one to finish my sentence. Which is rather annoying because it means I end up having to send more texts to finish saying something instead of just sending a long single text. Picture messages seem to have charged me too. I have Chatr and apparently my plan doesn't have picture messages in it despite me paying for 2 gigs of data. It really doesn't make sense cause my old phone didn't seem to get charged for picture messages but the new one does.
