You were both right about the clean singing discussion in the chorus. Sean uses a technique here similar to Chester Bennington that some call "scream singing." He's basically able to engage his true vocal folds and belt like you would when not using harsh vocals, but then you also add a bunch of distortion on top of that to get the final effect. From what i understand, its one of the hardest things to do as a vocalist in this kind of genre. First you have to figure out how to do it in a healtht manner, and then it probably takes years to perfect. Love watching both of you react and play off each other. You both come off as extremely authentic people.
