Freecad is INCREDIBLY powerful. It's easy to dump on it for its UI (which is not great, to say the least), but if you can get over that hill, you have an amazing piece of software, made more amazing by the incredible add-ons. It is my only experience with CAD software, but it seems to be shaping up to compete with the best of the best. It is remarkable software.

The improved blade profile built from the time 34:00 is perfectly achievable with FreeCad. I duplicated it with my version 0.18 from the dimensions of your SoliWorks model. On the other hand, the sweeping of the blade must be carried out otherwise, it is necessary to swap the profiles and the paths. It is also better hydraulically to specify the vertical profiles rather than the horizontal ones. SolidWorks has generated a blockage area near the machine axis which is not good for performance. It is also better to improve the profile of the compression path section by using spline lines instead of circular arcs. I do not know how to include a picture of the final result obtained with Freecad in my comment.

@@n3r0z3r0 I'm sorry, but I don't have the software or the time to illustrate my point with a video. I tried to do it but it is very long. The key to getting the same result as Solidworks model is, as shown, to reverse profile and path. I can assure you that it works and that you get a perfect compressor wheel. But I did not succeed in introducing the fillets to the edges.

Let me start by saying that this is an excellent concept for a video, perfectly executed. It is mentioned on another comment as well but the fillet issue can be resolved very easily. When you finished you compressor you could see that the lines of the generating bodies where still visible although it was all one body. This can be fixed and it's this behaviour that makes fillets harder. With a part open go to Edit>Preferences>Part Design>General. There click the first 3 options. This might also remedy the collapse in the rebuild after you changed the loft. I am not really sure why this was left unchecked by default. Maybe to make switching between direct and history based modeling easier. I don't know, but it feels like it should have been on by default. Please, show us any different results you might get with this different options setup.

Thanks for a great introduction to FreeCAD. I managed to follow along with the video and I'm amazed that I could draw something that complex looking. I've played with Solidworks in the past so seeing that side by side comparison really made me look at FreeCAD in a better light. FWIW, FreeCAD 0.19 can now add the fillets but it still can't handle changing the shape of the blades (at least I couldn't get it to work). It's not like I'll ever design anything that complex though.

I have a lot of respect for your patience with FreeCad. I use Siemens NX at my job, and I just can't use FreeCad. Most CAD software have usability problems but at least the workflow is pretty equal. When it comes to UI/workflow FreeCad seems to have tried to reinvent the wheel and made it square...

Your object was broken because you edit the profile and alter the number of egdes, planes and vertexes with it. All other features after that can then not rely on the original edges as before. That is in my opinion the biggest problem of FreeCAD actually. You can not edit what you want in the history stack. You can do some workaround in building tactics to avoid that but this makes it really hard and last long. You can test it if you set the view only to the first sweep. It should show the complete object. Anyway, i love FreeCAD too. Its a really great programm. If they can fix this history problem (Topological Naming) it was perfect for my taste. Here my two tips: To hide something select it and just press space. To use the cut-view in scetcher press the bluish icon right next to the scetch icon.
@brunof17344 жыл бұрын
This is now fixed, however you should install a fork from FreeCAD: github.com/realthunder/FreeCAD_assembly3. I think eventually it will be implemented in the main branch. This fork also contains the Assembly3 module. This fork fixes that problem and you are able to update old sketches/ features and in principle the model rebuilds without problems (similar to SolidWorks)

The filleting and lofting capabilities are the two main things I miss going from SolidWorks to FreeCAD. I spent a lot of time getting frustrated with fillets crashing my model before I figured out that I just shouldn't be using them as aggressively as I was. With lofting, it's annoying that you 1) can't loft to a point and 2) can't select vertex correspondence. I haven't been able to find a way around these limitations, and it's caused issues on a couple of parts I've designed

35:51, it can take some time to update...your system time indicates it took you 9 minutes to replace that arc with the revised arc. that was exactly why i stopped learning freecad and switched to fusion 360. if i'm doing this for a hobby my free time is limited and i don't want to spend 30 seconds everytime i apply a fillet to a single edge. if your building from a plan freecad probably works fine but if your experimenting freecad will drive you away

This is a great video - thanks! It's impressive to see that FreeCAD can pretty much hold its own against one of the titans. > I would probably do this a little bit differently if I was only doing this in SolidWorks... I'd be very interested in seeing a video of how you'd do this if you were only using SolidWorks. Much of the criticism that FreeCAD gets is focused on the workflow and user experience. Due to the high cost of commercial parametric modeling software, I haven't had a chance to use any. From what I gather, the more tedious operations in FreeCAD tend to be handled automatically SolidWorks. It'd be cool to see a comparison that points out the areas where FreeCAD's UI/UX could be improved.
@cooperised4 жыл бұрын
I'd encourage you to try out OnShape (written by many of the same team as SolidWorks) and Fusion 360, both of which are available free of charge for non-commercial use. OnShape is restricted to creating only public documents, but that's not a problem for trying it out. Fusion 360 is becoming increasingly crippled in its free version (driving some people to FreeCAD I think!) but the modeller is still complete. It's worth trying them out just to see what is still missing from FreeCAD, which I would love to love, but at the moment its UI does slow me down. It's mostly little things - for example I'd like the freedom to be able to select a constraint type before I select any sketch features, I'd like to be able to dimension an arc to a line or an arc to an arc (shortest distance), I'd like to not have to worry about the difference between the three distance constraint types because I should be able to imply them with the mouse, I'd like the 'principle of least modification' to apply to sketch constraints (e.g. if you select a bunch of things for a symmetry constraint, the mirror line is chosen as the feature that least alters the existing sketch rather than the feature you clicked most recently), I'd like a "scale on first dimension" setting for the same reason, I'd like a concentricity constraint, I'd like the mirror command to add symmetry constraints, I'd like fewer modal dialogs, and so on. Little things that add up. Oh and I'd like to get rid of the awful graduated fill background, but there might be a setting for that, I'll have a look!

Hi Joko, well done. Would you say, according to this example, that FreeCAD can compete with a industrial solution like SW?
@JokoEngineeringhelp6 жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas! That's a great question. I found this example where it was used in a production environment: forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=16993 forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=30841 Overall I think it would be competitive, however companies usually tie in CAD with ERP/PLM type softwares, and that may make it not feasible for large companies. It doesn't have as robust capabilities for advanced lofting, fillets etc so complex stuff would be harder. Nonetheless, I think it's a fantastic software. I haven't touched the drawing environment, yet, and that would be an important determinant as well.

Firstly I want to thank you for this excellent video, but I would like to ask you two questions since I have been testing out FreeCad that to me seems to be quite good and I think this is an excellent student application. 1. What verison of FreeCad do you use in the video? 2. I have version 18 but it has bugs and flaws, but still I think it is at least excellent in many ways, does the dimension module work correctly after you make a workshop drawing? in the version I have the measuring points or gripping point of the model move to the right from the views in the drawing and after the points have moved dimensioning is impossible, plus editing the dimensions is not possible.

Hi Ivar, I use 0.18.4 and in more recent videos I use 0.19. I'm not sure if I know exactly what you mean by a workshop drawing but I use the techdraw workbench to create drawings and they are accurate to the model for me. I have a video in which I cover ways to add symbols and you can manually override dimensions using the same method but I wouldn't recommend it because it would break the parametric nature of the dimension. I have not had any problems with points moving around on me and I wouldn't be able to replicate the issue, perhaps the freecadweb.org forum would be able to help. In my personal opinion, hotkeys in Freecad are a lot more effective; in a sketching environment I can set constraints faster in FreeCAD than SolidWorks. Having a new daughter, I can model one handed easier when I hold her too with FreeCAD. The selection is nice where you can select multiple things without the ctrl key, SolidWorks I'm always keeping my left hand on that part of the keyboard. Plus, you can't beat the price! The functions you can get in FreeCAD for free that actually work cost a pretty penny in SolidWorks.

Take an example from Arnold Roundtree he starts out simple and builds on that," Baby steps" for the lack of a better term.
