For such complex parts a better option is a true pro CAD like CATIA v5 or NX- very well optimized for complex geometry and large assemblies. I can work on 10 years old pc opening the full model of a car with several thousands parts in catia v5. I'm not sure i can pull of such a stunt in any hobby -midgrade cad like aliber or freecad, or even inventor, SW. I know NX can also do it, maybe CREO (idk, i have very limited use of creo)

Thank you very much for your time dedicated to this educational video. It would be very interesting to see a comparison of Alibre against Ondsel. I'm a 3D artist who does little modeling, but when necessary I do it in Maya. I decided to study CAD so I could 3D print objects with exact measurements. I'm studying Ondsel, a variant of FreeCad, but all the time I come across a video saying "that other cheap CAD program" is much better, that it doesn't give errors, it's faster, etc. The cheapest CAD program of the moment is Alibre Atom. So I don't know whether to continue studying OndSel or dedicate my little available time to something more mature, like Alibre. Obviously cost is an important factor. Alibre Atom seems to be affordable. There are other options like Plasticity, but the approach to the problems seems to be very different.

JUST installed FreeCAD. I became proficient in Solidworks while testing graphics at Dell. Now, I have an engineering project I'd like to bring to fruition, and wanted to try FreeCAD because of the incredibly low cost. :) However, I was getting very frustrated with the UI in FreeCAD. After watching this video, I am certain the pain will be worth the reward learning FreeCAD. Thanks!

I've tried every knurling tutorial on KZbin. Can you please explain why this is not working for me? I'm trying to make a knurled SMA thumb screw for all of my antenna for my FPV radio, & FPV drones. the issue I'm having is after making the sketch with the knurled feature, when i click subtractive or additive helix, I get an error that "wire is not closed" or that "the linked shape box is empty". The only difference between my part is that it has the 7.9mm(flat-to-flat) hex hole in the center. I know that I can get this design off of thingiverse or equivalent but I want to know how to do this so I can add knurled features to other parts in the future. Thanks in advance,
@JokoEngineeringhelp
@JokoEngineeringhelp 27 күн бұрын
That sounds like the error that would occur on the sketch level. Likely, there is a piece of the sketch that is set to construction geometry, or there is an extra sketch element somewhere. Feel free to email me the part and the name of the feature/sketch your having trouble with if you'd like a second set of eyes.

At the start you configured FreeCAD to use Imperial units, but at 19:00 you set the dimensions of the line to 50mm. Why are the units in metric? Did I miss something?

I invested the time to learn DS a decade ago for enclosures for my printed circuit boards, and have used it since... It is quick and easy for 3d prints etc. BUT, you have to upgrade to interact with about everything other than 3d prints... The "export as dxf" after upgrading to a paid version leaves a lot to be desired, so now I am needing to do CAM operations for cnc, I am investing in learning FreeCAD. thanks for the comparison!

WOW. I am just starting in FreeCAD. Again those who know more make us feel inferior and stupid by using those three letter acronyms GDT without telling us what the hell that means. I searched and did not find. PLEASE tell us what that means, before you explain how to do something that many of us have NO IDEA what it means. Some consideration please!
@JokoEngineeringhelp
@JokoEngineeringhelp Ай бұрын
The scope of the video is how to use GDT tools, this is not a video about what GDT is or what it means. If I were to explain the meaning behind everything, this would probably be a 10 part video series and not practical for this video to reach its desired end. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geometric_dimensioning_and_tolerancing
@pitufouno
@pitufouno Ай бұрын
But you could say that GDT means Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. Simple.
@EPeltzer
@EPeltzer Ай бұрын
I completely agree with pitufouno. Not a professional architect or engineer but I've been doing mechanical drawings and 3D modeling, machining etc for about 40 years and I'd not heard the term GDT. And your passive aggressive response to this is ridiculous. Would it take a 10-part video to explain that "GDT means geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing"? No it actually takes six words. It's the most trivial thing to define that acronym to save people a click and probably vastly increase the appeal and viewer numbers on this video. Also look up the KZbin search data, is anyone actually searching for GDT then look up if people are searching for "CAD dimensioning" it will be very substantially more. You're basically telling everyone that your channel is for professional engineers who speak English and that anyone else who might find this useful can go sod off. You might just want to go ahead and put that in your channel header.

Thanks for the guide - extremely useful. I ignored your advice that a polar pattern has to have an axis that is perpendicular to (something?) and tried with an arbitrary axis. It worked! Maybe your attempt would have created multiple solids - or maybe its because I have FreeCAD version 0.21.2?

I'm pretty excited about Freecad now after learning about Ondsel... someone finally figured out how to monetize the open source process in a way that really makes sense for CAD software. Only issue for me is I'm a little torn between Blender CAD Sketcher and Freecad... I'm pretty fast in Blender these days and learning Freecad has been a real slow process which I kinda doubt will benefit me over just using Blender with CAD... Like right now I'm working on a drive shaft for a submarine and I just wanna extrude the faces out like I would in Blender... but doing simple stuff is hard in Freecad and doing hard stuff in Blender is simple in Freecad... kinda wish you could just run these programs together to work on the same file in real time...
