I work in the senses and perception lab at York University. My thesis involved evaluating if musicians could tell the difference in tone with electric guitars. We had 6 groups which consisted of Musicians who listened to back-back live playing of samples with 3 different electric guitars without visual cues Musicians who listened to recorded samples if the same instruments Non-musicians who did both of the same And of these three groups 1/3 were randomly assigned to a condition where there was no difference between the samples (the same guitar was played 3 times for them ) There was no correlation between body wood and detectable tonality. We also had frequency spectrum analysis done on the recordings and they were more dissimilar between recordings of the same guitar (sonically) than varied due to wood. If the guitars had the same pups and were played the same and it was set up well there was no reliably discernable difference. That being said people in our experienced musician group could identify the guitar with the tremolo installed about 60% of the time (the tremolo wasn't being used while playing)

Oh man I'd love for you to run this experiment with audiophiles. Those fanatic music snobs that spend 100 times more to achieve that last 3% quality and look down their noses at brand X because the doorknobs at the factory that makes their packaging their products are sold in have .003% more zinc and weren't built by virgin elves using magic spider webs and captured baby giggles. And because of this their expertly trained ears can totally tell the difference produced by that inferior brand X that sells for less than the ones they get. I thought there was something to it all. Got a DAC and fancy amp and expensive headphones. It works but I can't tell 99.9999% of the time and none of the time if I'm not looking for it. Now I have just a headphone amp and reasonably expensive headphones, sounds just as good to me.

@@jros4057 to be honest it would be interesting to work with audio professionals. Our 'musicians' were self identified. So there was a big issue with variance there (the distribution for the musicians was kinda inconsistent, and had a soft double peak) . The research could definitely be improved to see how MUCH difference there is and if someone CAN tell the difference. Perhaps much more experienced musicians would do better, but the people on our list who had 5-10 years of experience didn't do significantly better than musicians of 1-2 years or any other group.
@TriadAgone
@TriadAgone 2 жыл бұрын
I don't doubt someone could tell there's a difference, but reliably telling which is which or what changes were made we concluded is basically impossible for an average person, or an average musician.

when it comes to a solid body electric guitar there's no such thing as tone woods. Tone woods make a huge difference in acoustic instruments though and that's why they were called tone woods. Guitar manufacturers have used the term "Tone Woods" for a marketing strategy for years. So many people hear with their eyes. I can't even begin to tell you all the people who have stated "There's just something special about the sound of a "Les Paul" guitar." But they wouldn't be able to tell the difference in a blind test if those pups, and electronics' were wired to a shovel. The pups are the heart of every electric guitar. but as the late great Mark Twain once stated "It's easier for someone to believe a lie than it is for that same person to believe that they've been lied to." Thanks for sharing your test results with us. I do believe that the guy in this video was a lot happier with his guitar after his mods. If not for nothing more than just the sustain and holding tune better. Not to mention how much prettier it looks with the mods. Again, thanks for sharing your study results. Peace.. Joe

That guitar body looks rad with the red flame top and the new bridge looks like it was supposed to be there. I owned a MIJ Ibanez RG 7-string in the early 2000's. It was all black with a single thick skunk stripe on the neck. It sounded so sick on my Mesa Triple Rectifier.

Ahm, not crazy. Not when you consider how thick, soft, and rubbery wood glue such as PVA, or Aliphatic Resin Luthiers Glues are. That thick rubbery layer between the new Nut & Fretboard at the Headstock WILL slightly reduce the resonance transference between the surfaces. That is WHY we use a thin hard-setting Glue such as Thin CA for Fretwork & glueing the Nut. 😘

what about the body and neck tho? I'm a beginner going to intermediate and was thinking of doing that, buying a cheap RG and upgrading it. I'm not sure if I can justify the cost of prestige, but also the built quality concerns me in the standard range. I'm a bit torn at the moment :/

@@Zara-ix6uk I totally get it, personally I did it so I can have more recording options. I purchased two Ibanez RG 7s both second hand for about 200 a piece, after negotiating it down from the original asking price. I own other higher end guitars like Gibson, fender, even a 90' Ibanez Universe and to tell you the truth I am in love with the guitar I built. Its light, super comfortable to play, and sounds badass with the pickups I installed and new electronics I added to it. Its honestly all about preference. Sure you can spend a fortune on a prestige but after doing mods like these I certainly believe you could go without spending an arm and a leg on one.

Great work. Do you think you should make people aware that you’ve lost the standard pickup switching combinations by going with the 3 way switch. To step up in quality from the standard alpha 2502n switch and maintain its switching capabilities you need to go with a vlx91, schaller megaswitch m or a dimarzio super switch (or comparable versions) all of which are pricey. Minor point but hope it’s added to the options people might have.

Hey Marcelo, i was lucky to have a Bareknuckle Aftermath already installed with a stock Ibanez neck pickup when I purchased this second hand on Reverb for dirt cheap. I had an extra dimazrio PAF 7 neck from another build laying around and installed it with the BK bridge and they sound killer together!

Can we change a fixed bridged to tremolo bridge in an electric guitar?
@ivanfiallos-zambrano5911
@ivanfiallos-zambrano5911 3 жыл бұрын
That involves a lot of routing and wood work, a professional should always take a job like that. To be honest, id rather invest in a guitar that already comes with a tremolo cavity as is. With a little research and depending on what type of guitar you have.. there are some bridges that could replace tune o matic into floating trems definitely something to check out!

Doing it yourself is a very satisfying feeling, give it a try but when it comes to replacing the nut I got lucky with a direct fit..id do your research on the size of nut on your guitar (and the guitar in general) and go from there. When all else fails find a good luthier close to you that can replace the nut for you and do the setup

I know everyone's tastes are different and what makes something premium to me is different than you.... with that said, the biggest difference to me going prestiege to budget ibanez is the fretwork followed by craftsmanship then hardware. The Gibralter bridge is actually on the prestiege hard tails and is a fantastic bridge. I do like the upgrades you did to the nut, tuners, and electronics. Hopefully your tech spent some time on the fretwork to bring them up to the level you are after. Good work, I enjoyed the video.

What are your thoughts re, using conductive paint in place of the conductive tape? Is it as good? Not as good? Neither here, nor there? Thanks.
@ivanfiallos-zambrano5911
@ivanfiallos-zambrano5911 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Narayana, as far as conductive paint I think that it may not be as conductive as solid metal. It is more expensive than tape, and once you apply it, you won’t be able to remove it so i think tape works best for me in my opinion!
