Make Your Mercedes Transmission Shift Smooth Again

Im a Mercedes Tech (retired now) and this is the first time seeing this method of resetting shift adaptation values. Actually I like your video because it resets the shift values at both cold and hot. When you use the key method I think your wiping all shift values and the car will have to relearn or better said adapt to the drivers habits. The Mercedes Benz DAS software actually records the shift adaptation values in 3 different temp ranges cold medium and hot. Usually the shift adaptation values are transferred over to a new conductor plate by the technician when replacing the plate in order to avoid the hard shifts that occur when installing a new conductor plate on the 7G transmissions (722/9) But when this data is lost due to a total failure, like the TCU is beyond reading its data, then the shift element can be adapted individually in DAS. Once you perform for say the 1-2 shift adaptation or learning manually it will display a page with the shift adaptation values in the 3 temp ranges. Those 3 ranges are learned by driving the car. Always the best way to do any and all of these type of things is if you have the Mercedes Laptop but I understand not everyone can afford one as they are very expensive. Im just throwing all of this talk out there to help people better understand these cars. The Mercedes with the 5 speed trans (722/6) are basic and cheap to service and replace the conductor plate, but the 7 speed (722.9) cost a lot more and require SCN coding and adapting the part to the car. This is done on the laptop. Then you have to have a login and password to connect with Mercedes Benz too. So just having the laptop wont get you there you also need to know someone who can log you in or go to a shop that has the expensive Mercedes Benz subscription! So for the 7 speed yes you can do the filter services but a shop is recommended for the conductor plate. Now if you only have a speed sensor code yes you can replace it yourself if you have mechanic skills as they are available online on eBay. If you get the output sensor code address any ABS codes first as a wheel speed sensor can make this trans code pop up. The Engine Trans and ABS computers all work together and share data with each other through the data bus known as the CAN which is communication area network a 2 wire data bus where all the ecus talk to each other. (2013 MB A Class 200) Please advise ...."Without changing gear, consult workshop" warning appears when car is sitting idle at lights, or in traffic in "P". The engine cuts out and needs a key start then take to "D" seems to drive ok but starting to occur often. What does this warning mean? Does anyone know if this is this an easy reset, or does it need a workshop repairer? Thanks in advance......

@@domrowe5537 Take it to the shop that has Xentry DAS software and a connection to the MB servers. Chances are you will need to re-flash the transmission control module with an update or replace the control module and update. This is just an educated guess without seeing the car. A diagnostic scan of all the control units is the first step. Second based on the results and diagnosis the repair is performed and if needed the car will need computer updating. The warning the car is displaying is a warning that usually only comes on the dash of a car that has had the transmission ECU/conductor plate replaced and this appears before that conductor plate is coded to the car. So figure that one out. Have you recently replaced any parts? If not get ready to spend some money as these repairs are not cheap.

My friend at MERCEDES says the only transmission reset for pre 2010 vehicles is the engine key to position II, floor accelerator for 30secs, turn key back to off, release accelerator then wait two mins, never heard of this. Just had the two speed sensors changed in transmission due to clunky changes and getting stuck in limp mode. Used to have to do the reset method every few days til it no longer worked and car was stuck in 2nd gear.

Mobile Disco Wirral they’re plastic and located in the transmission so just go bad. After changing mine in March car drove fine for 3 months then transmission developed yet another problem 3months later with clutches. Would advice change those two speed sensors if your cars jolting into D/R or jamming in 2nd gear..then sell the car as fast as you can. Once bitten twice shy my 2007 CLK has been a money pit, once somethings fixed something else goes wrong. Just moved to Audi A5 cab ..hoping Keith gets an Audi so can continue to watch his great videos for when things start going wrong 😂

I have a 1997 E320 I believe has the 722.6. A few days ago it wouldn’t shift out of low gear so I assumed it went into limp mode. I stop turned the engine off and went to restart it and it would not do anything when turning the key to start. I have a scanner I hooked it up no codes. No check engine on dash. A few minutes later I turned the key it started up and drove perfectly normal. Ran some errands all was well. Got back to where I live stopped and when I drove forward it again wouldn’t shift out of low gear in the summer mode. Push the switch to winter mode and it stayed in low gear. Turned off the engine and turn the key to restart and again it did nothing. What I since learned when it does that I can put the shifter in neutral and it will start just fine. Starting it in park works sometimes. I’ve also since learned if I manually move the shifter through the gears it shifts fine. Stop with it in Drive and sometimes it will go back to the lower gears without moving the shifter sometimes I have to manually move it to the lower gears and up shift and it shifts smooth and fine. I’m wondering if that winter/summer switch is bad to cause this. Things have been spilled on it through the years and just the week prior I replaced the entire power window , trunk release and mirror switches because the drivers window switch quit working and it sits next to the w/s switch. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did do the hold it on the floor with switch on run for 20 seconds then shut the key off and immediately afterwards it worked perfect. The next morning back to what it was doing.

I am getting a rumbling intermittent vibration in my 2007 mercedes e350. The intermittent rumbling vibration gets faster as I speed up and slower as I slow down. At higher than 50 mph the vibration is not heard much. Any ideas ? Thank you. Great videos by the way. Mine is a base model with 231 000 miles fyi. Also it has a sealed transmission I believe and I don't know if oil and filter was ever changed. I bought it at 230 000 miles. Great video! Please could you do a video for a complete transmission fluid change including torque converter. i have ml350 2013 and seem to have harsh shift chnage and jerking... Done a fluid change but only 6 liters cane out when it takes 8 approx... Rest is in the torque converter which is cant seem to figure out how to do. Great vids keep em coming.

Yes, however generic scanners hard reset everything else also and sometimes not reset things down to the level that you hoped for. If you try it let me know your results.

Keith - how is this different from another method I am seeing right now where you get in car, turn key on to position 2 (not started), make sure AC/Lights/Radio off, depress gas peddle all the way and hold for a bit (can't remember how long), let up on gas, turn key off and then wait 5 minutes before starting and driving. I might have some of this procedure wrong from my memory but you get the idea.

Hello, I have a technical question, I own a 2007 ML350 4MATIC with 123,000 miles, I have problem, once or twice a month my transmission does not shift to drive. coming out of my driveway on reverse, no problem but when I shift to drive it does not shift, I have to turn it on and off a few times shifting from park to drive or neutral to drive, after a few times it does engage, after that it works ok for a week or two. I will try to reset it the way you showed on this video to see if solves my problem. Please let me know if you have an idea how to fix it. Thank you.

Hi I have mercedes gla 220d 2018. And when car is cold its running smoothly but after 10 to 15 minutes drive my 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear makes a vibration like tyre is puncture but actually all my tyres are good. When i stopped the car and car is fully stop than car change the gear from 2nd to 1st and i can feel the vibration. I reset the transmission like you showed in the video couple of times but when car get warm it start making this vibration very often and on the same gear like 2nd gear and driving slow i can still feel something stuck under my tyre. Like dugh, dugh, dugh every 2 seconds. But when i drive over 40km car is smooth no vibration or anything. My mechanic recommended to change gear oil. He checked with his computer and there was no fault in the car. What do you think can be the issue?

I have a issue where I have a electrical drain on my ml 35 - year 2006.. This causes esp light to turn on once in a while, the Sri light, my speakers to go wacky, but the worst is the occasional break where it seems to Not want to go. I will stop and it will normally idle forward. When I release the brake. When this acts up the vehicle will not idle forward it will not accelerate normal and will act like the breaks have seized. Yet I can move forward at 25mph to get out of the way of traffic behind me. The minute I turn off and turn on the ve Chile the issue is gone. This has been very concerning.

Hi Keith trust you are well. I have a 2015 250 cdi with 723 auto. 100kms. I am getting delayed D1-D2, D2-D3 shifts after car has been driven for 20 minutes. So far no error codes. I have started to use manual shift when delay in shift occurs. Could this be a low fluid level issue? Thanks

I too have a mercedes benz ml350 and my problem is that it won't shift from 1st gear to 2nd gear. what can i do. What would cause a 1987 300d to be slow to engage from neutral to drive or reverse. My car has 163k miles and trans has regular oil .filter and pan seal replacement. It never slips and engage is solid just slow. Any ideas.

I have a 2006 ML500 with 204K miles. I get a Clunk when the car downshifts into first gear as I'm rolling to a stop. I have read on the Mercedes blog that it could be "slack in the planetary gearset." There is a recommended repair under TSB AF28_10-U-1600AG which recommends replacing the planetary gearset with a friction plate. I would rather not get into that kind of repair. Will your fix as shown in this video remedy this down-shift clunk noise, or is there another "fix" necessary for this problem?

I have a 2009 Mercedes e350 and it shifts very hard it jerks.. I was told I needed to add transmission fluid.. but I don’t know how to check the fluid or add transmission fluid I can’t find the filler tube can someone help?

(2013 MB A Class 200) Please advise ...."Without changing gear, consult workshop" warning appears when car is sitting idle at lights, or in traffic in "P". The engine cuts out and needs a key start then take to "D" seems to drive ok but starting to occur often. What does this warning mean? Does anyone know if this is this an easy reset, or does it need a workshop repairer? Thanks in advance......

1736? I'm new here. Thanks for the video. I'm going to try this on my '08 ml320cdi. It has a vibration on acceleration between 15-25mph. I did have the oil and filter changed on the trans, but it didn't help much. A mechanic suggested changing the TCC solenoid (torque converter lock up solenoid). Thoughts?

@iRepairAutos thanks for replying back. If I pick up too quick and then let my foot off the accelerator, it will hard bump back into gear. Or, if I've been driving awhile, it will bump back to a lower gear. Check engine light stays on. Some slightly rougher idle, not that rough. The only difference in the last year is I went 50k on transmission fluid change and they didn't drain the torque converter. It looked like espresso. Other than that I've changed it at 43k 83k and then at 130k miles. I'm currently at 145k and preparing to drain the fluid again. I've studied on removing the valve body and do you know which solenoid (s) is the torque converter clutch solenoid? Thank you

Also, the transmission will set itself to every driver independently depending on your driving style. So all your really doing is resetting it to its original factory settings. After that it will now relearn your driving style again, which will result in the same problem you had in the first place. If your transmission is shifting abnormally you have a bigger problem! Also the first thing you would do is to check the fluid level, not the other way around. Just Saying !
